Looking for information on my great-grandparents, ZINA(aka Bill)BRAINERD and IDA MAE(nee AUSTIN)BRAINERD, who lived in Petoskey, Emmet Co, MI., from at least 1890-1893.

They had 4 children:
GROVER, who would have been around 5-9 yrs at that time
MAE b. October 15, 1890 in Petoskey.
PEARL b. September 25, 1893 in Petoskey
HARVEY b.1895, d. 1896 unsure of place of birth

Zina could have been born in NY State and Ida Mae might have been born there also. I have no birth or death dates or a marriage date. I have run across other AUSTINS in the area in my research and wondered about the possibility of Zina and Ida Mae moving to be near her relatives. I have been told through family stories that Zina may have owned or run a lumber mill during the time they were in Petoskey.

Any information would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Robbin Brainerd
my grandfather joseph u. smith and his first wife, olive(carmel) smith had a son who drowned in a well around the age of three years. i am guessing that the son was born around the year,1901-1902, and if three years of age died around 1905 or so. i am not sure of the birth or death dates , but anyone who can find this out for me would be very much appreciated. after there sons death, my grandfather and olive divorced. do know that olive gave piano lessons in emmet county, and my grandfather was a wood mason.
according to the family bible, there is no mention of this son, only what my grandfathers second wife was told, and she passed in 1974. hopefully we can find where this little fellow is buried and cause of death.

thank you for all of your help.

George Joseph Hiar was born 26 Jul 1896 (most likely in Chippewa county) and died 10 Aug 1962 Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan.

He moved to Carp Lake in Emmet county sometime before 1910 and lived there most of his life. Of all the research I have don on the Hiar family, I have found no relation (as of yet) between the Hiars and Ora Clark or his wife Frances Farley. Will keep my eye out though!

Good luck and happy hunting!

if you go to www.seekingmichigan.org you can look up all deaths recorded in michigan betwee 1897 and 1920. This lookup provides the death certificates which can be downloaded free of charge. sometimes you have to use the lookup in different ways due to spelling errors.

Yes, I looked up your uncle Bob in 2004 & visited him and his wife twice in the Twin Cities. It's a pity he died so young. He seemed to be the healthiest of the whole family, and yet he was the first to go. I've got some recent photos of him & his family around here also.
My mother always told me we had Duvernay relatives in Michigan, but she had lost touch with them over the years. We failed to do the obvious thing and look up the name in the Petoskey phone book. We would have been visiting with your side of the family for many years before my mother passed on, if only we had done the obvious thing.
Now I regularly search the internet using Google for any of the family names I'm related to. I've met lots of interesting distant relatives that way. You are also descended from Jean Baptiste Trotochaud, father of Lucy Trotochaud Duvernay, John Elmer Sr's wife. There are about 50 different ways "Trotochaud" has been spelled, everyone of those in North America is related to you. There is even a Lake Trotterchaud in Minnesota named after the family. The government had to choose between using the name "Trotterchaud" for that lake instead of "Trotochaud" and they made the wrong choice.
See the web page on the Trotochaud branch I put on the internet here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~trotochaud...

Be glad to, but I have no way to send you anything directly - your email is blocked on this website. (Not necessarily a bad thing). I am the same as ADembinski, who posted the first part of this thread. Send me an email address for you -- you can click through ADembinski for the email address I use for genealogy, send me a message that way, and I will send you the graphics I referred to. I have blocked the display of the "tresho" email address.
I use many email addresses, the one for ADembinski is dedicated to genealogy contacts, I also get a lot of spam that way, be sure to put something informative in your Subject: line. I have heard from several dozen relatives this way.
Years back I gave my contact info to your grandma Ida, but I guess it didn't get to you.

Ida has told me a little about you. I haven't seen her since 2006, the last time I came through the Twin Cities. I have a scanned newspaper article about some of John's early work and a scanned pen & ink drawing he made. It was handed down to Billy DeVernay, who died 7 years ago next month. His sons found a trunkful of memorabilia they shared with me.

Michigan.
Her parents:
Jean-Baptiste Gatien Birth 31 Août 1783 in Quebec Canada
Death 25 Feb 1837 in St-Édouard (Napierville)
and Marie Rose Mini Mesny Birth 21 Feb 1785 in St Gene Francois Regis, St Philippe de la Prairie, Quebec, Canada.

Sally married Pierre Cordier dit Bellehumeur(Peter Bellmer)
his parents were:
Pierre Cordier dit Bellhumeur Goodnature
Birth 21 Jun 1793 in Ste-Therese, Quebec, Canada Death in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA ( I have yet to find the info. for his death I am assuming Wisconsin at this point), and Marie Marguerite Vaudry
Birth 7 Sep 1792 in Terrebonne(Lachenaie), 64008, Les-Moulins, Québec Death 19 Oct 1876 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Peter and Sarah had their first child Joseph Bellmer Cordier Dit Belhumeur on Birth 08 March, 1849 in St-Édouard (Napierville), Québec (his Death 26 Dec 1928 in Petoskey, Michigan.)
They then moved to Clinton New York where the next son Peter was born. The baptismal record for her first son in the archives for St-Édouard (Napierville)in Quebec and her the marriage and birth records show her maiden name to be Gatien. I realize that there are quite a few "legal" records out there with different spellings for Sarah and Peter's French last names. But the information that is listed by the church records in Quebec are the only records that show relationships of all three generations on each document in more than one instance that are consistent, match and are logical based on time and origin. Please see:Joseph Cordier Dit Belhumeur Event: Baptême (Baptism)Baptism Year:1849 Baptism Location:St-Édouard, Québec (Quebec)Place of Worship or Institution: Napierville and then: M Salouice Gatien
[M Salomée Gatien][Marie Salomée Gatien] [Marie Salomee Gatien] Event:Baptême (Baptism) Baptism Year:1823-1830
Baptism Location:St-Philippe, Québec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution: Laprairie and lastly:
Pierre Cordier Event: Baptême (Baptism)Baptism Year:1818
Baptism Location: Ste-Thérèse, Québec (Quebec)Place of worship or Institution:
Ste-Thérèse-d'Avila-de-Blainville .
It is annoying that the actual records do not match with the dates on the tombstones in the cemeteries. But I imagine that they were doing the best they could do in providing the dates at the time. Also there is a vast difference between the names on many documents here in the USA. However if you follow the information given in the French church records it all fits like a glove!
There names were Elza and Frances Rhieberger. Their parents names were Glen James and Myrtle Leona Rhineberger. I can't find them on the 1910 census in Michigan at all. Thank you.
Martha Dye sent my Uncle, Donald Snider a very thorough and large family tree of her mother's side of the family back to Joseph Ditto (1762/64 to 1834) and Helen Grimm. I really appreciate the time it took her and the clarity of her hand-writing. I plan to add this information on to my family tree under, “Scranton Family Tree” – mjs529
RIP Martha Althea Dye

I am looking for information on this pair as well. We aren't related but the McCorkells built, owned, and sold several cottages in Bay View, MI between 1888 and 1911, including my family's cottage. Would love any info you've uncovered.

SLJones

I just happen to stumble across your message board by accident. How far back is the basinaw name that you are refering to? My family name is basnaw but it starts in 1890. Just tonight I got to 1880 with a different spelling but it is the same person and no one knows what it was before. Could these be splits from the same line? We know that our line changed their name several times and we have it passed down that it was originaly french.
