I'm looking for an obit, or the info it contains, on Charles Austin Steele. According to the Soc. Sec. Death Index, he was living in Interlochen, Grand Traverse Co., MI, when he died July 14, 1972. He was buried in Almer Twp. Cemetery, Tuscola Co., MI.

I found a reference that says a wife survived him, but I don't know her name. Surviving daughters were Cressy Koch and Charlene Kurtansky.

I'd appreciate any help.

I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I'm holding one of a girl who is graduating from 8th grade. She is identified as M.V. Prashil.

In the 1900 census, there's a little girl named Mary Prashil who is 8 years old, but then doesn't show up in a later Michigan census. Also in the same census, is a little girl-2 years old, named, Maricie, daughter of Charles & Anna. In 1910, she's shown as Mamie. My best guess is this girl is Mamie and she's in the photo.

She's in white and the dress is tea length. She's holding flowers and her diploma is on the stand next to her. Eighth grade would make her about 13 years old. It was taken by Smith & Price of Traverse City.

Charles, is listed as being from Austria, others with the same name, Bohemia. The rest were born in Michigan.

My goal is to get this into the hands of family or a serious researcher. For details on how to obtain it, contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com

Kathy

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Grand Traverse County, Michigan as his home of record.

Soldier: ROBERT G. GILBERT
Born: December 11, 1932 Caucasian
Date of loss: November 30, 1951 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 102 families from Michigan that have not been located. There ais onere two familie from Grand Traverse County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am trying to acquire more information about my grandfather's aunt Lela. She was born Lela Burgess in Indiana in 1885. By 1915 she was living in Hartford City, Blackford County, Indiana, with her husband Benjamin Deering. By 1949 they were living in Bendon, in Benzie County, and had some children. Because Bendon is so close to the Grand Traverse County line, I'm wondering if there may be some records about their family in the Grand Traverse County archives.

I'm trying to find descendants of Jacob and Frank Langs, my great-great grandmother's brothers. At the time of Elizabeth's death in 1935, Frank is still listed as living in Traverse with Jacob listed in Muskegon. I know Jacob lived in Traverse in the 1910's as I have some postcards he sent her at that time.

I have some old pictures that I think could be Elizabeth's mother but none of her descendants recognize them, and of course there are no names on them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In 1915 a Rachel Steele married a Sidney DAVIS, and there is also a record of a Rachel LESTER marrying Sidney Davis the same year.

I'm starting to think Alphonso and Rachel may have been divorced, even though that was almost unheard-of at the time.

If anyone can find a record of a death or divorce for Rachel Steele between 1910 and 1916, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I just heard this on 9&10 news & thought I would post here to solve the mystery.....

Tombstone Found in Parking Lot
Posted: 9/7/2006

» View Picture » Play Video

Hide Video

The owner of Hansen Foods in Suttons Bay has some strange items in his lost and found box, but one won't fit in the box.
Three weeks ago a customer found a tombstone sitting near the end of the grocery store parking lot. The name Mary T. Ryan is engraved on the tombstone. According to the grave marker Mary T. Ryan was born in 1899 and died in 1969.
After checking several county records and local cemeteries police still can't find where the tombstone belongs. Anyone who with information about Mary T. Ryan should call Suttons Bay Police.
9 and 10's reporter, Leah Beno, and photojournalist, Jason Dotsch, have the story.
Help on James R. Prickett (~1803-abt 1872), Michigan

I am looking for information on James R. Prickett (b. ~1803-1804, d. after 1872), the probable first son of Richard “Captured by Indians” Prickett. So far, this is what I have:

James R. Prickett (b. ~1803-1804, d. after 1872) lived in Allegan and Leelanau Counties, Michigan and appears in the 1860 census in Leelanau. He is known to be a “half-breed” and an interpreter. He last appears in property records on 26 Jun 1872 in Leelanau County. He married twice (his first wife is unknown), last to Elizabeth O-Mosh-Ke-Day-Se-Quay on 22 Nov 1854 in Grand Traverse County (he was 51, she was 26). He had at least one son with his first wife (Joseph, b. ~1838, d. 21 Jan 1900, m. ~1860 to Mary Ann Mayisce or Mary Mes-Ka-To-To-Kiew) and five daughters by Elizabeth. They were Nancy (b. ~1851), Anna (b. ~1852, m. to Peter James), Sally (b. ~1855), Mary Chek-Wan-Noh-Kah (b. ~1857, m. to Peter Pa-Kwau-Ge or Pe-Quon-Gay), and Betsy (b. ~1859).

All were members of the Ottawa/Odawa tribe, but only Anna is shown as appearing on the Durrant Rolls of 1908, though descendants of the rest also appear.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
I just read this in today's Traverse City Record-Eagle that the Grand Traverse Area Genealogical Society donated an extensive collection of obituary and burial card records to the Traverse Area District Library. There are more than 25,000 burial records from the Oakwood City and Catholic cemeteries dating back to 1861 and more than 10,000 obituaries dating back to the late 1800s. These records have been microfilmed by the Genealogy Society of Utah. A great big thank you to the Grand Traverse Gen. Society members.

Frank Joseph STANEK 1832-1877 b. Bohemia married Rosa Mary VLK 1832-1923 b. Bohemia. They arrived in Michigan in the 1870's in Grand Traverse County, Peninsula Twp. Their children were Frank, Vencil, Joseph, Mary b. 1959, Frank b. 1861, Josephine and Carles (twins) b. 1865, Vendeline b. 1869 and Rosa b. 1874.
In particular, I am trying to find their origin in Bohemia and if any of Rosa's family immigrated as well. Could the "VLK" family have changed their names to "WOLF" ?
Pam

My dad died earlier this year, and my brother and I started looking up some family history. My dad's grandfather was a man named Berl or Bert Favel from Wexford County. He married and divorced a woman named Ruth Barr (my dad's grandmother) at the turn of the 20th century. They had a baby named Lela Jane, who was my dad's mother. Ruth Barr's family moved from Ohio to Northern Michigan, perhaps Grand Traverse County. Does anyone have any other information about the Barrs or the Favels? I'd appreciate any help.

They appear in Illinois in 1850 and then appear to have settled in Grand Traverse by 1860. I am assuming they died in the Grand Traverse area as well. Hiram before 1880 and wife Lydia Pratt Thayer died between 1880 and 1900. Would like to connect with anyone researching or associated with this family. Thanks Joanne

I have a note on rootweb that Charlotte R (his wife) was exc. of estate: however when I contacted the County clerk (probate dept.) they said the only had 3 small papers requesting the closer of a bank acct. and no will was found. Now wouldnt you think a Dr. with 3 grown children and one still at home, and with property would have left a will? Is there other sources to search? and can anyone help me with an obit?
Karl August Fiebing age 51 and his wife Maria Sophia Mueller age 52 and two of their children, Rudolph Albert Wilhelm 17 and Wilhelmine 16 arrived in Ionia MI in 1872 from Ducherow, Prussia. The 1880 census for Ionia also lists a Herman Fiebing family. What the relationship is I don't know yet. Supposedly the Wisconsin Fiebings are also related. Karl August (b. 7-11-1820) parents were Friedrich & Friedrika (Kading) Fiebing, my GGG Grandparents. All were shoemakers. Rudolph moved his family to Traverse City, MI abt 1882 but his widowed (prior to 1880) mother remained in Ionia until her death. Three of my grand daughters are 6th generation Traverse City residents.

Traverse City - Marilyn "Booty" (PHILLIPS) ISON, 65, of Traverse City, a journalist who was a cub reporter for the Sturgis Journal, died Feb. 13, 1997, at her home. She was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Chicago, a daughter of William E. and Helen (DARROW) PHILLIPS. Her early childhood was spent in Traverse City, and she graduated from high school in Garrett, Ind. She loved journalism and made a lifelong career of writing. After serving as a cub reporter for the Sturgis Journal, she moved to California where she worked for the dean at the University of Santa Clara in San Jose. She also spent 12 years at KQED-TV in San Francisco as producer and fund-raiser. Because she enjoyed traveling she spent three years in Sydney, Australia, where she wrote about the outback and other areas; and she spent 11 years in Honolulu, Hawaii, working with several firms while writing editorials, commercials and short stories. After she was diagnosed with cancer in 1995, she and her husband, Jim, moved to Traverse City from New Harmony, Ind. Surviving are two sisters, Barbara M. MARTIN of Traverse City and Shirley A. MIDLING of Oroville, Calif.; five stepchildren, Brenda MOHILL of Kalamazoo, Kim FRONING and Brian ISON of Sturgis, Steve ISON of Edwardsburg and Karen WATSON of Delton; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the spring. Arrangements were handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. source: undated newspaper (submitted by a volunteer, no family connection)

State Archives of Michigan Naturalization Record Indexes

Hello,
Just sharing information on this subject.
State Archives of Michigan Naturalization Record Indexes

Indexes to the records for twenty-seven Michigan counties are on-line (PDF format). The naturalization indexes have been created by the generous efforts of volunteers at the State Archives of Michigan. Each index has been transcribed from the original hand-written index. Early handwriting varies in legibility and is sometimes undecipherable. Archives' volunteers attempted to include all possible spellings of a particular name, however, misspellings and variations of names appear in these indexes. This may confuse the researcher looking for a specific name and/or spelling. Please take these points into consideration when reviewing the index so as to allow for a thorough search. More indexes will be added to the Web site as they are completed.
http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17449_18635_20684--...
Naturalization Records

My great-grandparents settled in Benzie County in 1880. According to the 1900 census, my great-grandfather was a naturalized citizen, however, Benzie County does not have a record for him. Is it feasible that he may have travelled to Grand Traverse County to file his papers, and if so, is there a source index to naturalizations for Grand Traverse? Thanks for any help or direction anyone could give!
