Active Ionia Nonagenarian Has Centenarian Ambitions
Ionia, March 24 - Timothy Burtch, 95 who makes his home in this city with his son Harry, is a Civil war veteran and a member of William H Borden post, GAR. He insists his wonderful physical condition warrants the belief he will reach his century mark.
Mr. Burtch is just as well known hereabouts as he is active in his daily toils and travels. His wife whom he married three years ago died late in December at the age of 81.
Comrade Burtch enlisted in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was taken prosoner at Mine Run, VA, Nov 25, 1863 with 97 others and 125 mules. They were held at Richmond until February, 1864 when the men were transferred to Andersonville.
He says he was the only invalid in his family of 12 children and at 11 was critically ill with typhoid fever. But at 95 he is carrying on in remarkable manner.
