Hi- There was a big saw mill that sat here around 1900 between the railroad and the Brule River. If anyone has a history of this mill (or can direct me to such a history), I'd be grateful. Thanks, Paul

Ball family in Crystal Falls, Michigan

I am looking for any information about the family of Thomas Ball. He was from Cornwall, England and moved to Michigan between 1860 and 1865. My great grandgather, Alfred Ball, was the first American born child (1865). Thomas was a miner and several of the children, including Alfred, were miners too. The family moved to Morris County, New Jersey. Alfred married Mary Nichols there. Alfred had three daughters, Edna, Laura and Ida, who were born in Iron County, Michigan. They moved to Bessemer, Jefferson, Alabama. Alfred was a blacksmith with TCI & RR until he retired. I think one of his brothers was the mine supervisor. I have more information, but am hoping for help. Thank you.

I have just obtined an obit for Augusta Kavinsky, nee Zandi, and it gives the names of her parents as Paul and Paul Zandi. I have been able to find them in the 1900 and 1910 census records, living in Montreal Twp but cannot find them after that time. 1900 census the name is spelled Zondi, and in 1910 it is Londi. I have checked with the Iron Co Clerk to see if there might be a burial record, and there is nothing for Paul and Paula. If anybody has any access to some other sort of record and can help find these folks after 1910 I would appreciate any help. Paul was born about 1853, and Paula about 1855, so I dont think he would have been employed after 1930.
Thanks
Bonnie

John H. Richards died 2-20-1910, He married Selina Bawden whose parents William and Elizabeth Trenbath Bawden lived on Isle Royale at the Siskowet Mine 1850 to 1853. They had a son William J. Richards Who was born in Houghton, Mich. when John H. Richards his father worked (I believe Isle Royale Mine) in 1862. Selinas parents William and Elizabeth and other siblings
were with them also. Elizabeth Trenbath Bawden died in I believe Houghton that same year William J. was born in 1862. They then went to Rockland in 1863 (All the Richards and Bawden families) to work at the Minesota Mine. In 1869 when most mines shut down in Ontonagon County the Bawdens (Most) went to Duluth to work while the Richards stayed on in Ontonagon County. In 1873 however John H. Richards & Selina and children went back to Cliff Mine to work in 1873.
The Richards family then moved to Soudan, Minn. to work in the Iron mines there (Selina Bawden's father William Bawden lived in Duluth, Minn. having gotten married a second time in Rockland).

Thier son William J.Richards moved from Minn. to work in the mines of Crystal Falls, Mich. Is anyone familiar with this family. I am tracking families who lived at the Siskowet Mine on Isle Royale (the island) from 1849 to 1855.
to work for the Minnesota mine there.

I'm researching Armena "Minnie" Rattie and her family. Armena was born of French-Canadian parentage (nee Ratté) in Quebec on 17 January 1862. She and her family moved to Isle La Motte, Grand Isle County, Vermont circa 1865, and then onward to Michigan circa 1880. About this time she was married to Horace [Orace] Popaloose Moore.

Minnie and Horace Moore settled in Stambaugh, Iron County by 1900 and he died in 1930, she in 1937. They had a large family. I am interested in collaborating with any other researchers on this family, especially any living descendants.

Regards,
Chris

Is there anyone in Crystal Falls or Amasa, Michigan that has the names Järvi, Jarva, Järvinen, or Lake surnames in their families? I have found that my great grandfather has gone by the names Anselmi Järvi, Anshelm Järvi, Anshelm Järvinen, and Andrew Lake. He was born in Finland Dec. 17, 1884, came to Michigan in 1900 and 1910, worked for Longyear Mining(went to Norway for that company) in 1915, got married to Toini Kallio (also known as Toini Palmgren) in 1915, and died in Crystal Falls Mar. 2, 1918 at 34 yrs. old. He's supposedly buried in Evergreen Cemetery but isn't listed there. So I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this name in their family . He had one child Lilli, born in Norway, and another child Helvi (Helen) born 2 weeks after he died. Any info. would be a real TREAT!!! Thanks!!

Seeking information about husband's grandparents, Ellen Salo Vickers and Theodore Vickers. Ellen was the daughter of Evert and Mary Jacobson Salo; sister of Waino, Toivo, Irene, and Raymond Salo. No information whatsoever re: Theodore Vickers, except that "Vickers" may not have been his original family name. Theodore died in 1955, Ellen in 1964. Both are buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.

Husband's family stopped visiting Mary and Irene before he was old enough to get many of the family stories, and his father isn't forthcoming with family information. We'd like to know more about both the Salo and Vickers histories, if anyone has any leads for us.

Sincerely,

Laura Jones, Chicago IL

Mrs. Edwin Jacks and Mrs. E.J. Oswald. Samuel, his wife, Jennie, Sibella and their husbands are all buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Crystall Fall, Iron CO., MI...I need a better lead on the other children...anyone out there researching this family? THey came from Cornwall to the states, lived in Marquette co., Michigan where the father worked in the Negaunee mines, , Missouri and then Norway Michigan eventually ending up in IRon co., MIchigan where Samuel was a mining captain and/or superintendent.
I need help getting my family history from United Lutheran Church, 506 Superior Ave. , Crystal Falls, Mi. In January I spoke with the church secretary, Elaine, and I sent a nice donation to the church for her time, and she has given me every excuse in the book as to why she hasn't had time for the information I requested. I would appreciate it if someone that knew Elaine, could go to the church, and assist her with this small task. I am getting desperate for help! I have received more help from a person in Finland, than I have from someone in my own country. Please e-mail me, and I will pass the letter on to you that has all my family names (the letter I originally sent Elaine in January). God Bless whoever helps me on this one!!!

Keeping in mind that the county formed after there arrival to the area, should I also look in a Marquette paper?
What is the name of the paper? I live in Kansas City, Missouri, so a simple trip to the library or historic society is out.

IrisLillie@aol.com

Maki family in Hematite, Iron County census 1920

I´ve been trying to trace an ancestor called Erkki Syrjamaki. He emigrated to US and died there. There is a small chance that he could be Erik Maki listed in US census 1920 in Hematite, Iron county. Does anyone have any information concerning this family? Appr. birth-years counted from the census. I had quiet a lot of trouble with the writing, all of the names might not be correct.

Erik Maki b.1868, wife Lizzie Maki b.1881 and children Hjalmar b.1902, Edward b.1903, Bertha b. 1905, Arne b.1909, Signe b. 1910, Ellen b.1912, Aila? b. 1914 and Vieno? b. 1918.
The parents have been born in Finland, the children in Michigan. The family cannot be found in 1930 census in Michigan and if this is the family I´m looking for, Erik died in 1929.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Merja in Finland

I'm looking for information on Joseph Kreger who lived in Iron River and married Josephine Pedersen. He died of tuberculosis in the early 1900's in a sanitorium or where ever they sent people with this disease. I know it was somewhere further north. Before this time he ran a grocery store. I'm afraid that I don't have any dates right now except to say it was in the early 1900's. Joseph had a brother but I don't know his name. They escaped from a Catholic orphanage where they were mistreated in New York and came to Iron River. They had a son Wilmer (an artist) who also lived with his wife, Jean Garner in Iron River. Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm trying to find out any info. on any Hirvilampis or Lampis that lived in the UP in MI (mainly Amasa). My great grandfather was John Hirvilampi (changed to Lampi in early 1900s), married to Maria Hirvilampi (who was married initially to his cousin Isak in the late 1800s). Their children were Alli, Helia (Maria & Isak's) John & Eino (John & Maria's). I'm tryting to locate any info. on Eino, he was born around 1917, died around 1935. All I've been able to locate are some census records. Also my grandfather never knew his grandfather's name. He was married to Serafina Viljanmaa, if that helps any.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for info about my Great Grandfather. He was Francis Joseph McGee, no bdate known, who was married to Elizabeth (Elsie) Frappier/Frattier, no bdate known. (I believe it was Frappier, as I have found what I believe to be her father; maybe Leon Frappier who lived in Houghton Co. Schoolcraft township in the 1870 census). Francis and Elizabeth had three sons; Vincent, Richard and my grandfather, Donald Leon McGee born 01-May, 1909. They were to have lived in Iron River, Iron County at some point, as my grandfather was born there. Donald married Doris Antoinette Norrell, dob 15-March 1911. They had three children; Patricia, Mary and my father Leon Donald McGee who was born in Escanaba in 01-June, 1938. Doris had parents named Anton Norrell and Amanda Anderson, and I know nothing about them, besides the fact that Doris was supposed to have been born in Escanaba.

I am looking for information on the poor farm (now the Iron County Medicare) and where the poor staying at the poor farm would have been buried if they could not afford to buy a burial plot. (I know my ancestory is not buried at the Ever Green Memorial Cemetery and he was not buried in the yard at the family farm). I know he died in Iron County at the the poor farm but that the court house has no record of his death. There was no obituary in the Diamond Drill of his death. The church record did indicate that he died at the poor farm but had no mention of where he was buried. His name was Frank Wirtanen. The cencus records do indicate that he was at the poor farm in 1920. He died in June of 1921.
