Surnames: Doherty, Dougherty, Parker, McNamara, Madden
JOHN “DOUGHERTY” was born in Ireland around 1826 – 1830 based on the census of 1880 and his May 1888 death registration. For continuity, I use 1826. I don’t know who his parents are but he may be related to Ellen Doherty-Madden, perhaps a nephew or brother. My guess is that John left Ireland around 1851 age about 25.

The 15 June 1860 census of Jackson city 3d Ward page 10 House 508 Family 329:
John “Dougherty” Age 31 (1829) born in Ireland working as a Clerk and living with McNAMARA's.
Margaret McNAMARA is 33, born Ireland (1827) a Saloon Keeper with $6,000 value in real estate and $3,000 value in personal estate. (Is her maiden name Parker or Doherty?) John is 12, born Ireland (1848), William is 10, born Ireland (1850); (left Ireland after B William & before B Edward), Edward is 8, born Michigan (1852) (7 years between B of Edward & Margaret?) Margaret is 9 months, born Michigan (Oct 1859). Mary PARKER is 39, born Ireland. (is she sister of Margaret?)

John “Dougherty” married Elizabeth “Doherty” probably in Jackson around 1865. This is based on the 1866 birth of their first recorded child, John L indentified in the 1870 census. Marriage record not yet found

On 9 May 1888 John Dougherty died of "Consumption" in Jackson, MI. He was married, a Baker, age 62 (1826) born in Ireland, his parents were dead and their Residence was unknown. Don’t know where he is buried.

ELIZABETH “DOHERTY” was born in Ireland probably in the month of June with the year ranging 1837 – 1846 based on censes of 1870, 1880, 1900 and her April 1910 death registration. For continuity, I use June 1837.
Elizabeth is also seen in the records as Eliza, Hanna and Bridget.

I don’t know who her parents are and she may be related to Ellen Doherty-Madden, perhaps a niece or sister.
Her maiden name appears to be DOHERTY as stated by two of her sons: Elizabeth’s son, Joseph C. marriage record of 29 May 1899, states “DOHERTY” is his mother’s maiden name. (Two months earlier, her son Joseph C. was the witness for Daniel L. MADDEN’s naturalization, a grandson of Ellen Doherty-Madden). Elizabeth’s 5 April 1919 death certificate states her fathers name was “DOHERTY”. The information was reported by her son, Edward F.

She left Ireland in 1859 according to the census of 1900 and would have been about 15 years old. Elizabeth “Doherty” and John “Dougherty” probably married in Jackson around 1865, based on the 1866 birth of their first recorded child, John L., indentified in the 1870 census. Marriage record not yet found

On 5 April 1919 Elizabeth Dougherty died at 4235 Grenshaw St. Chicago. She was age 64 (1846) born in Ireland
and a widow. Her father’s name was "Doherty" but the maiden name of her mother was unknown. She lived at
this address 2 years (1908), 18 in Chicago (1892) and 45 in US (1865) and is to be buried April 6 in Jackson. Don’t
know where. Her son Edward F. reported the information on her death certificate.

The Seven Known Children of John and Elizabeth born in Jackson MI
1. JOHN L. B 1866 per the 1870 census.

2. WILLIAM M. B 20 Feb 1868, father is John is a baker. This William is not in the 21 June 1870 census, he must have died before it. The 1880 census has a second William, age 6 (B 1874) (went thru GENDIS, all Jackson Co – none found).

3. JOHN JOSEPH B Sept 1869 per the 1870 census (SEE POST #5)
He was 9 months old on the 21 June 1870 census of the “Dougherty” family at House 186 Family 211 4th Ward, page 27, Jackson, Mich. Living with them was Ellen MADDEN age 18 (B 1852) in Ireland and she is a Dressmaker. Ellen DOHERTY-MADDEN’s daughter Ellen, was baptized 23 Jul 1852 Couraganeen Chapel, Bourney Parish, Co Tipperary, Ireland. He is "JOSEPH C. Doherty" that was the witness to the March 1899 Naturalization of Daniel L. Madden. Daniel is the grandson of Ellen Doherty-Madden and my grandfather.

4. CHARLES F. B 24 Aug 1871, father is John is a baker.
Not sure is this is the same person, but Chas E. “Dougherty” died 4 E. Ontario, Chicago on 16 Jan 1919.
He was age 40, Est Birth 1879 in USA, Marital status is blank, Father’s name is “Dougherty”, Mother is Unk. Chas was a Clerk and buried Evansville Cemetery on 18 Jan.

5. WILLIAM B 1874, father is John is a baker.
This is the second William. The 1887, 1888 and 1890 The Jackson City Directories list William T. “Dougherty” as a Clerk for Tuomey Bros, 173 W. Main St. Grocery, General Store Hardware. 1890 a Caner and resided at 77 E (“old#”) Main. The first was William M. B 20 Feb 1868 and must have died before the 21 June 1870 census.
The name “William” must have been very important to John & Elizabeth.

6. EDWARD F. B 10 May 1876, father is John a Saloon Keeper.
"Edwin" and "Elizabeth" and "Dougherty" are lined out and changed to; "Edward F" and "Eliza" and "Doherty" with comment of "Affidavit filed 7-2-41". Looks like an attempt to standardize the spelling of the name “Dougherty” to “Doherty” (to no avail!) Not sure what the Affidavit file number means.

7. “MAYA” or “MARY AGNES” B 21 Feb or 28 Apr 1880.
The record on the birth of this only daughter is conflicting on her name and date. A birth registration from the 7th Ward of Jackson states: “Mary Agnes” was born 28 April 1880 and that her father John was a Boilermaker. GENDIS states “Maya” was born 21 Feb 1880.
Maya (“Mary Agnes”?) died 14 Nov 1884 of “Croup”. She lived 4 years 6 months 21 days (B 21 Feb 1880). Her father and mother were John and Elizabeth Dougherty. Her age at death matches GENDIS. The date of 28 April could be the registration date. “Mary” or “Maya” is probably poor handwriting or transcription error.
