THOMAS CUSTER, GARFIELD TOWNSHIP RESIDENT, DIES. Thomas Custer, 58, a well-known resident of Garfield township in Kalkaska county, died Wednesday morning, March 9, in Mercy hospital at Grayling, following a two-day illness. Mr. Custer was born April 4, 1897, in Missaukee county and spent most of his life in Garfield township, where he worked in the woods and built cabins for sportsmen on the Manistee River. He is survived by his widow, Zoe, and the following children, Mrs. Harry Wilkerson, Fife Lake; Mrs. Erving Griffin, Roscommon; Mrs. Percy Angell, Spencer; Mrs. Robert Wheeler, Jackson; Mrs. Harold Cockroft, Springport; Miss Leata Custer, Kalkaska; George Custer, Delores Custer and Lyle Leslie Custer at home; one sister, Marie Baun of Wisconsin; one brother, Jim Custer of Fife Lake, also 19 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. from the Berg Funeral Home, with Rev. Mathews officiating. Burial will be made in Garfield township cemetery. - The Leader and the Kalkaskian, March 10, 1955
