Hello Darlene: I see you are still working on your family research. I have collected documents as well over the years on your family ...and I too am confused. However, when I asked about the name Crow...I was told that it was just the Indian name for Andeg/Andek. It may be the interpretation for her Indian name in the Ojibway language. Not sure.

A traditional healer may know the answer. Hope this email finds you doing okay.

Anita/Munising

Thank you for your post. That alone narrows it down considerably. I found his registration form & he registered (as 'Bill' Aslin) Jun 05, 1917--So he apparently died between then & November 21, 1918 when his name was listed. Thanks so much for the help! Judy

You might try asking someone to look in local papers. I did find mention of him in the Jackson Citizen Patriot from November 21, 1918 - it was a listing of Michigan men killed in action, and just listed his name, and that he was from St. Ignace.

If William was KIA in Europe he may be burried in a mass grave with no DOD posted; just his name. Further, there may not be a death cert issued by the military.

Back on the case of one of my brick walls.
Appy (Ap, App) Spry was born abt. 1917. He was the son of Ap & Luanna Anes Spry. I always assumed that he was born in Charlevoix county since that is where the family lived. Recently I found that he (Appy Spry) crossed the boarder from Niagara Falls NY into Niagara Falls Ontario in 1932 stating that he was 18 and born in Mackinac Island MI.
Is there anyone that maybe able to check any indexes or records of his birth in Mackinac?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

She is alive in 1860 per census but no listing in 1870. One assumes that she probably died in that time period. State death records were not kept till 1867 so if she died between 1860 and 1867 there will be no civil record. They resided in St. Ignace so I would contact the local church, St. Ignatius and see if the have a record.

Hi,

Both George Edward, were married to a Mary Emma Grovogel and both had the same parents, Reuben Daten Page m. Elizabeth Ann Blodzell. Also, one of them showed they had 10 children. It's possible that George Edward, might of went back to Jacksonport, WI in the 1930's and died in WI. Also, something to think about, he might of became sick, and was sent to the Newberry Hospital, in Newberry, MI. And if he died there they buried them with no grave marker. Do you have access to ancestry.com? If not, i can send you what i find and i can send a message to others who are researching your George Edward, and have them get in touch with you. If you are interested get back with me at josie56@sbcglobal.net

James LaVerdure
Michigan

Hello,
Thank you for your info.

I have not found the George Edward that died in 1904. It's interesting since my George was married to Mary Elizabeth Grovogel who also died in 1903.

I had seen the other census report of George in the 1930 census. This one matches the family stories and censuses that I have. None of the neighboring counties have any death record whatsoever for any George Edward. My last resort would be to submit a request to the Lansing State office to do some research, but for each additional year span to search there is an additional steep charge.

The St Igance library has those newspapers on micro film and i heard now they have them on their computers. Since you have the exact dated it should be easy to find an announcement if there is one. Back then the St Ignace papres didn't have an obit. You just had to look through the paper page by page. Sometimes when it was someone of importance it'll be on the front page. If not then it's be in the paper where they have reports from different little township reports usually written by someone from those communities.

My g-grandfather George Edward Page appears on the 1930 census as having owned a home in Naubinway, MI with the Mackinac County records.

Family lore is that he died around 82 years, Feb. 23, 1938 -- however I cannot locate him anywhere within Michigan or Wisconsin.

Is anyone available to do a obit search at the library or do a death record lookup? St. Ignace is the county seat so records should be there. Neither cemetery in Naubinway has any record of him and though cemetery records may have been through a fire, there is no headstone either.

This mystery has stumped me for more than a decade.

I live 5.5 hours south of St. Ignace. I am willing to trade research for anywhere within an hours drive of me - Door County, Brown, Outagamie, Kewaunee, and Sheboygan.

George was born in Upper Canada in 1854, lived and married in Jacksonport, WI. His wife died in 1903 leaving him 10 kids. He moved around in upper Michigan for the rest of his life, never remarrying.
Hi Joni,

Thanks for your reply.

I have pictures of George along with pics of his wife, Mary and all of Mary's info, I simply can't find where he died and was buried.

I also have George's citizenship papers, marriage certificate, and all the census records... just missing his final resting place and what happened to him.

I can't find anyone that far north to do volunteer lookups in that area to do library searching. I am trying to avoid the 5.5+ hour drive there as winter approaches. So little info is published online from these small little cities in Northern Michigan.

I know the creators of the findagrave memorial page. Their pictures came from me, actually. She is my distant cousin through her husband's side. She doesn't know where the death date came from so there is no actual documentation of it so far.... hence the mystery.
Larry,

I'm working on my Rousseau/Martin Family and it fits in with yours but you have different information than I do and I'm confused. Can you help me sort this out?

My 2nd great grandfather was Charles Rousseau born about 1832 in Canada. I can't find him until the 1860 St. Ignace, Michigan census where he is married to Charlotte Martin (I have her dad listed as Solomon Martin, where you have Charles Martin?

In the 1860 census Charles and Charlotte had their last name as Rousseaux (note spelling) and had two children with them: Antoine Babineaux and Macala Babineaux. I believe the correct spelling of this is Babineau. (my grandma, Charles and Charlotte's granddaughter, used to visit a Charlie Babineau who she said was her cousin. He lived in Bayfield/Ashland, Wisconsin area.)

Antoine stays with Charles and Charlotte Rousseau and in the 1880 census he is listed as their son, Antoine Reso (note spelling). I've been told Charlotte married a Antoine Babineau before she married Charles and he is the father of these two boys. Antoine's name changes with each census, from Babineaux to Delosier to Reso.

Charles and Charlotte had 4 children together:

Joseph M. Rousseau born about 1867 in Michigan
Charlotte J. Rousseau born about 1868 in Michigan
Charles Rousseau born about 1871 in Michigan
John Jonas Rousseau (my great grandfather)born May 17, 1875 in Beaver Island, Michigan. John Jonas is the only one I have been able to find any information on.

The rest of this family remains a mystery--it's been a 15 year old brick wall. So if you can assist me in sorting out these details I would be forever grateful.

Thank you,
Delayne

I'm looking for the mention of Joseph Rousseau. I would like to know what it says about him. I'm trying to find out if he is in my family. My Joseph M. Rousseau was born about 1868 in Michigan and his parents were Charles Rousseau and Charlotte Martin. The family lived in St. Ignace from 1860-1880 (at least) last census I can find all of them on.

Thank you,
Delayne
These would be found in the probate records of Mackinac County which would be located at the county courthouse in St. Ignace. You can obtain the microfilm through your local family history center. The Rousseau family may be listed if they had an estate or administration papers that had to go though the probate judge. My records only go up to 1881.

I'm still searching for my Rousseau family and I've been told to check Mackinac County for the Estate Records. If you have no date of death or can't find a death certificate this is the next best thing.

What exactly are estate records? Where would I look to find them from the late 1890's or early 1900's?
Thanks,
Delayne

I'm researching the family of Charles Rousseau and Charlotte Martin (my 2nd great grandparents)and their 4 children. Before marrying Charles she married Antoine Babineau and had 2 children with him. I have Charlotte's father as Solomon Martin born about 1794 in Canada and her mother as Lisette Duprise (several spelling versions).

I've been told Solomon Martin's dad was Antoine Martin but I've also been told this is not true as there were 2 Solomon Martin's.

I don't have a lot of information on this family yet because I'm researching the Rousseau angle and it's been a brick wall for 15 years.

Thanks, Delayne
