Any one willing to look up an obit for me?
David Godfrey
He died on Sept 21, 1899 in Onekema, Manistee, MI

I am not sure if there is an obit. An article in June of 1899 out of the Bear Lake Beacon, mentioned his struggle with cancer. I am unsure if an obit would be listed in the Beacon or another paper from the area.

I am also a Johnson with ancestor from Manistee. Looking for William and Flavia Johnson if you come across them. I found some of the Johnsons from Manistee (owned a store of some sort), moved to Oregon. Found via familysearch.

Richard P. Thurber - Manistee 1870

I am trying to figure out what happen to Richard P. Thurber.
He was born between 1818-1823 NY

He is listed on 1870 Manistee census living with Mary. Not sure if she is a wife or a daughter. She was born in 1844 and have not found her previously.

Other sources on the internet, tell me that a Richard P. Thurbur, born in Saratogo NY, was the first postmaster of Fyfe lake. (1872-1873). He was a carpenter.

Another source says he moved to California in 1880 but not finding him...
...THURBER, RICHARD P. Was born at Saratoga Springs, New York, May 17, 1823. When he was seventeen years of age, he engaged as apprentice to the carpenter's trade, which he followed until 1856, when he engaged in merchandising. This business he followed about five years, when he closed out and went to Michigan. Here he followed carpentering for about twelve years. In the fall of 1880 he came to California, since which time he has been a resident of Lake County, and is engaged in the lumber business at Rice's mill. (From: History of Napa and Lake Counties, California
Slocum, Bowen & Co., Publishers San Francisco, California 1881 )

He had married while living in NY to Rebecca Riley.
Rebecca remarried in 1866 to a Mr. Allen. so I am assuming they got divorced..

I am assuming he died before 1885 and is somewhere in Michigan.. or California..

Can anyone suggest where I should look to find this person??

sheilah

My great-grandfather was Joseph (Josef) Szprejda who lived in Manistee and maybe Filer City Michigan between 1880 and 1900. I would like info. about his wife (whose name I think was Katherine (maybe Katarzyna in Polish). I would like to know her maiden name, her siblings names, and her parents names and also when they came to the US and from where. Katherines maiden name might be Klera or Kleura? Any additional info about the early lives and history of these peoples families would greatly be appreciated.
You should look for Anna in the 1900 census. There is a Finnish genealogy facebook page you can join. Do you know where in Finland the family came from?

Mary Breen Henchey born 1833 at St Catherines. Portneuf, Quebec, Canada, daughter of Phillip Breen and Mary Quinn, was my ggrandfather Richard Breen's sister. She married William Henchey in 1853. The Henchey faimly. Mrs Henchey's sister, Ellen Breen Murphy, and Richard Breen all moved to the Manistee area in the 1860s and lived/farmed near Bear Lake. The Hencheys referred to are my grandmothers cousins. The Breens and Murphys found their way to Chicago in later generations. I do not recognize the name Hughes in and from the area of Manistee but logging apparently attracted many Irish to Manistee from Quebec.

In the obit for David Hughes, the reference to "Mrs. James Henchey" is his daughter, Mary J. Hughes, who married James Lawrence Henchey about 1893 (probably in Manistee, Manistee County, Michigan). Mary J. (Hughes) Henchey was born July 1869, daughter of David Hughes & Elizabeth M. Duffey (1880 census, Manistee, Manistee County, Michigan; and death record for Mary J. (Hughes) Henchey).
Thank you for the information! Bartholomew's brother, Michael, died in Manistee in December 1869 and last year someone presently living in Manistee told me that St Mary's is the oldest parish but did not yet exist at that time. She told me that a Catholic cemetery did not exist yet and residents were buried on the north side of town at that time which is now a parking lot.She didn't know if bodies were reinterred elsewhere but St Mary's had no record of a Michael Bonk buried there. Was also told (by I believe by the Gaylord Diocese) that at the time 1870-1875 since there was no parish in Manistee, Catholics were served by an itinerant or traveling priest so records would be difficult or impossible. Don't shoot the writer....just repeating what I was told.

The three Catholic parishes (St. Joseph, Guardian Angels, St. Mary) are in the Diocese of Gaylord. The local parishes have records that are less than 100 years old. Anything over that are stored in the Diocese archives in some sort of electronic or digitized form. The local parishes do not have time to do a family search. There might be a volunteer who is an interested genealogist and will help you.

I made a request to the Diocese for my Polish Catholic relatives. http://www.dioceseofgaylord.org/inside/archives-44/

The search took them over a year because it was a volunteer who graciously took time out of his/her life to help. It will be quicker if you make an appointment and go to their archives. The cost was free and the records were loaded with information.

The Catholic Church does not dispose of parish records!

In 1880, they were living in Washington County, Illinois. I have written to the county courthouse in Nashville and apparently there are no county records for this family. All I have been able to find are Catholic church records which don't contain too much information. The Catholic Diocese in Michigan that contained the city of Manistee in 1875 apparently no longer has records.
thomasker2 is correct, in order to give you some help, you need to give a bigger picture of the family unit.

>>I've written to all the Catholic dioceses in Michigan....nothing.<<

If the query is too generalized, it's ignored, they simply don't have the time and volunteer base to do generalized searches.

You need to pinpoint an area at a specific time. Where was this family in the 1880 census?

>>I know that my great-grandfather's first son was born on 2/14/1875 in Manistee according to his death record.<<

DC data is secondary source. Simply said, what you see on a DC is to the best recollection/memory/ and knowledge of the informant, and can be highly subjective in many cases.

The marriage record of the party should have the names of his parents. Marriage data is primary, the bride and groom state their parentage for the record. This is document you seek and get clues to confirm parentage.

Localize where the couple was married is done by using the census records. Figure out when and where they were married, find marriage record, find parents, work another generation back. These are the simple building blocks of all genealogy research.
I know that my great-grandfather's first son was born on 2/14/1875 in Manistee according to his death record. I have been unable, however, to locate any information documenting his birth in Manistee. I've written to the Manistee Co.Clerk and enclosed the required funds but they stated that they found nothing. Would anyone who is more familiar with the state of Michigan or maybe even Manistee itself be able to offer me more suggestions? I live out of state, quite a long way from Manistee so anything that can be done via email or computer search would be best. I was hoping that John M Bonk (or Bak) birth record would help fill in some blanks regarding my great-grandparents. For some reason I didn't put alot of faith in the Manistee Co Clerk's office search either.
Thank you.

My fathers mothers maiden name was Marttala. The only information I have (and it may not be completely correct) is her name was Anna Marttala born in 1891 and died on October 1959. She married Nicholas (spelling?) Tervo and had several children. Completely stumped with the Tervo side of my tree. My father is 84 years old and has remembered all he can from his childhood. Anyone who can direct me to other sources to possibly get more information about my fathers side of my family tree? I found a Karin and Abram Marttala but I am not completely sure they are a match, you never know.

Thanks to all who've read this post. Happy researching.

The Free Masons were considered a secret society by the Catholic church. Perhaps it was the same with the Lutherans. Contact the Manistee County Historical Museum with the dates and info you have and see if they can look in the newspapers for you. Another resource of people who know a lot about Manistee history is a group on Facebook called "Manistee Vanished." If you posted your question there, you might get either an answer or help in looking it up.

Dempsey's - Unions - St. Petri's

Does anyone have any information on a business called Dempsey's Papersmith? Or maybe something close to that?

I have been given a copy of a church write up for my ancestor, which isn't very legible, and I'm trying to piece it together. It looks as though he was excommunicated from the parish for doing something while he was working for Dempsey's Papersmith. I can't seem to find anything on a place called Dempsey's in Manistee. The incident happened on July 24, 1901 and the parish minister was Otto Sitzler.

I've researched Otto Sitzler and it appears he ran a Lutheran church (St. Petri's) who had split from the main Lutheran church in Manistee (St. Paul's) in 1898. The reason for the split was a disagreement about memberships to secret societies among the congregation members.

Historically speaking, I know that the Labor Unions really started up in Manistee around this time as well, so I'm wondering if the church viewed membership into the Labor Union as a secret society.

Matthew 18: 15-17 is what was quoted on this report as well.

"15 If your brother or sister[a] sins,[b] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[c] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector."

Does anyone have any insight or information that might help me with this search? I would be forever grateful!!!

Thanks!

I believe the Elonza Chubb referenced below is really Alonzo Chubb, one of the early settlers of Manistee/Cleon Township. Charles Dobson was Alonzo's son-in-law married to his daughter Elizabeth.

I don't know of any Chubb/Dobson connection to Jacob Sears, although there may be one.

Do you know what the notes of hand Henry Gable bequeaths were for?
