Looking for information on the Lowensteins that settled in Ishpeming and Negaunee Michigan.

There were 2 Ishpeming Lowenstein families: Joseph (Joe) Lowenstein and his wife Lena and son Aaron was one family. Joe and Lena came over (from Riga) about 1901 and Aaron was born in Ishpeming in 1910.

The other family was Samuel B. Lowenstein, wife Celia and children Dorothy, Dena, Leslie, Earl and Norman. Samuel also came over (from Brisk or Riga) about 1900-1901. He married Celia in 1915 in Crystal Falls, Michigan. Samuel's mother and father's names were Dena (Blumfield) and Lasar Lowenstein. Lasar was a tanner in Brisk. Dena was killed by Cossacks on her front porch during a pogrom about 1917.

Joe and Samuel were co-owners of the Lowenstein store in Ishpeming. During the depression Samuel bought his uncle Joe out and Joe, Lena and Aaron moved to California. Samuel B. died in Ishpeming in 1947 and Celia in 1949.

Joseph (Judel) Lowenstein (Samuel B. Lowenstein's cousin) arrived in 1888 (from Riga, Latvia) and settled in Negaunee. He married his wife Ida in 1891 in Negaunee and had 7 kids: Samuel Benjamin, Bertha, Sarah, Rose, Leah and Aaron. They owned the Lowenstein stores in Negaunee.

It was a huge family back in Riga and thereabouts. Samuel and Uncle Joe tried to get family out of Latvia and Russia during WWI--especially his youngest sister and her two sons. One son was a Supreme Court Justice of Latvia and the other was the head of the main hospital. They wouldn’t come because they said nothing was going to happen.

Any information on this line of Lowensteins is greatly appreciated.
