Am looking for obituaries and/or burial info on Eleanor Wood (b. 1872- d. 1965) and her husband, Jacob Cook (b. 1871- d. 1950). I've already looked at the GenWeb offerings as well as census records and the records over at the FamilySearchLabs site and haven't found anywhere that lists where they're buried or their obituaries (or even when exactly they died!)... They lived in Home Twp. and had five children. If anyone can help me out on this, I'd really appreciate it!
I have been doing research on two families- the Stearns and the Lunds- who have some connection to the family of George Holland here in Montcalm County. Isabelle Stearns had him listed on her passport application as a reference and I believe a young, Lund woman was listed on a census form as being a servant of some sort at his house. Anyone with information on how either family was connected, please share. These connections should have occurred in the late 1800's- early 1900's. Thank you.

The school is no longer standing. Does anyone have any photos or info regarding this school? Thanks.

Looking for information about the John Wedderburn family who lived in Montcalm County (Lakeview Area and Surry Twp Clare County) about 1875 - 1907 with Ella living there until 1929.

The following is known:

WEDDERBURN:
Thelma M. 21 Aug 1899-18 Nov 1982---- Wife of Basil
Basil S. 30 Jul 1898-28 Mar 1963
Alice Eva d/o John & Ella 1888-1916
Ella 20 Apr 1853-17 Apr 1929
John 1844-1907
Lawrence E. 1899-1940
Udell J. 29 Aug 1873-13 Nov 1902
Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeview, Montcalm, Michigan

I have been able to identify John Wedderburn (b Canada 2/1844, C W Vet) and his wife Mary Ellen 'Ella' Pitts (my great grand aunt). John and Ella were married in Brooklyn, Jackson, Michigan 4/20/1871. The known children were born in Lakeview. The 1900 census says they had 5 children with 5 living. Alice Eva is one of those children. Lawrence E is a grandson but not sure who his parents are. Basil was married to Thelma Peterson. The problem is that Basil does not appear on any records except SSDI. Not sure who his parents are. Udell J Wedderburn is likely a son of John and Ella as Ella had a brother named Udelle. The J is probably John. Udell may have been born in Jackson County.

Other known members of the family were Coral Edna Wedderburn, married first to Frank Jones then Henry Olsen. And Harry (Henry) Lee Wedderburn married to Lillian Long. A George Wedderburn also appears in the area and was either a son of John and Ella or a son of John's brother George who lived in both Nelson and Solon Township in Kent County.

Any information you have about this family will help sort out the relationships.

Thank you,
Larry Isberg
isberg48@yahoo.com

Hello,
I am trying to find the grave of my great great grandmother Christine Hansen who I believe passed away sometime between 1894-1906 in Winfield Township, Montcalm, County. I have the 1894 Census in which Christine is listed as 83 years old and a widow. She is living with her daughter Martha and Martha's husband Halvor Olson, also living in the household are Minnie and Carl (children via Martha's first Marriage to Andrew Engebretsen), and Martha and Halvor's children, Mandy, Oneda and Ida.
I think that Christine Hansen is buried in Winfield Township, Montcalm County, Michigan.
Halvor and Martha later moved to Minnesota with there family, Martha's mother Christine was not with them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you, Keith Lawrence

Seeking information on the Graham family who operated a sawmill at Pine, Montcalm, Michigan at the time of the 1880 census. Parents were William Henry Graham, born about 1826, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada, and his wife Anna born England. Two sons, Charles E. and William Henry were partners in the mill.
Charles was born about 1851, don't have a birthday for William Henry Jr., both born Canada.
I have a bit of information on the family of William Henry Sr.
The mill must have been a pretty big operation as there is a considerable list of employees (listed on the 1880 census) living onsite.

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them.

I have a picture postcard of a lady & her sister. This had to be taken in the early 1900s. On the back is written, Cecil Galloup & her sister. I did a check of her name on Ancestry.com and came away with this information:

1910 United States Federal Census
about Cecil L Galloup
Name: Cecil L Galloup
Age in 1910: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1890
Birthplace: Michigan
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Father's Birth Place: Michigan
Mother's Birth Place: Michigan
Spouse's Name: Oscar L
Home in 1910: Bushnell, Montcalm, Michigan
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Female
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Oscar L Galloup 21
Cecil L Galloup 20

In 1930 Cecil & Oscar live in Ellsworth, Lake County, MI.

I found this in an antique shop in Lakeview, Montcalm Co.
As a hobby I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I recently obtained two photos of a man who is very nicely dressed. Very handsome guy. He's identified as Charlie Wilson.

These photos were taken in Greenville, Montcalm Co. MI. In one photo, he's wearing a dark double breasted suit & is clean shaven. In the other photo, he's wearing a "plaid" double breasted suit, and has the makings for a handle bar mustache.

My goal is to put these original photos into the hands of family or a serious researcher. If you'd like to obtain it or all three, please contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com for details.

Kathy

Death record or probate lookup, Timothy Eddy, 1900-1910

I am searching for death/probate records for Timothy Eddy. Born 1825 in New York, he is listed in the 1900 census as living in Pierson at age 75 with his wife Mary, age 65. Mary is listed alone in the 1910 census for Pierson, so I am guessing Timothy died in the intervening 10 years. If someone could do a search at the county courthouse or library I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Steve
Hackettstown, N.J.

I have been researching my family's history which has led me to Howard City. We recently found a feed sack in a family trunk that says; "Howard City Mill. Family Flour mfg by H.E.Symons."
I am interested in finding out the dates when H.E. SYMONS owned the mill and if this is the mill that burned (as per family lore). That obviously leads to the question of when Henry and his wife Tamzin S. lived in Howard City. I am hoping that someone will have some information that will help me learn more.
Alva Weeks (ca. 1824 - aft. 1865) m. Susannah MILLER ca. 1845

I am searching for information about the place/date of death of Alva WEEKS, born ca. 1824 in New York, married Susannah MILLER ca. 1845 likely in Bradford Co., Pennsylvania, and died unknown. Alva may have been the son of Jacob and Hannah (surname unknown) Weeks whom resided in Ridgebury Twp., Bradford Co., in the mid-1800’s.

Susannah MILLER was born 1825 in Pennsylvania and died in a place unknown sometime after 1864. She was the daughter of Isaac and Catherine SIPLEY Miller.

Alva WEEKS was a veteran of the Civil War. Reportedly, he served as a bugler in the 1st and 2nd Pennsylvania Calvary regiments.

The online records of Forest Home Cem., Montcalm Co., MI list an Alva WEEKS veteran burial record as follows: “Weeks, Alva, has stone, cross road southeast.” When I checked the cemetery alphabetical listings, I did not see any data for Alva WEEKS. Apparently, Alva WEEKS has a gravestone at Forest Home but its inscription is not listed in the online records.

I am searching for the place/date of death and burial for Alva WEEKS. The vital data inscribed on Alva's gravestone at Forest Home Cemetery would be very interesting to me. Also, any information about Alva’s wife, Susannah MILLER Weeks, would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Paul E. Newell
Ellicott City, MD

Sidney Twp, Letter from Sitting Bull to Ira Fults

Ira Fults lived with his son Andrew Fults at the time of the 1880 census in Riley, St Clair Co, MI. by 1920 Andrew lived in Sidney, Montcalm Co, MI. There was a letter that Sitting Bull wrote to Ira Fults in reply to a letter Ira wrote Sitting Bull as to why he murdered his brother David and family in the Minnisota Massacre of 1846. Sitting Bull said that he "came to David's house and wanted something to eat, that he could not feed so many, and they took him out by the road in front of the house and killed him" (and his wife and daughter). I am wondering what happened to this letter? If it still exists I think it should be in a museum.

SMITH, HARRINGTON, ROUSH, LEWALLEN, BAIRD, PERRINGTON,and new parents for Lydia PARKER

In January I posted info about the surnames BAIRD, FARLAND, PARKER, and KING. Here is an update with more surnames. Mary BAIRD remarried to Charles SMITH, and lived in Ionia County in 1880. Sarah FARLAND was Mary's mother. Mary had a daughter, Sarah BAIR(D) who married, possibly L. Lewallen in 1893,and by 1910 is married to Loren ROUSH.
I can't find any record of Lydia PARKER living with the parents Charles and Lydia (PERRINGTON) that are on her marriage information. But I find her at 2 yrs. with her brothers Richard and William, parents are Charles PARKER from Canada, and Cyntha HARRINGTON PARKER in 1880. Charles is living with Lydia and David BAIRD in 1900, and in 1910, Lydia's brother Richard is living with her, and she named one of her sons William. If anyone has any information about these families, I would so appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance...

Obits: Smith Corbin Nichols & Julia Walker

From "Belding Banner News" [Belding, Ionia Co., MI], 13 Jul 1939, p.p. 1, 4:

DEATH COMES TO AGED RESIDENT AT FARM HOME

Only Illness in Lifetime Is Fatal to Well Known Pioneer Man

Smith Nichols, age 90, long time local resident and pioneer of Ionia county, died Saturday morning at 8 o'clock at his farm home north and east of this city. He had been ill for nine weeks. Mr. Nichols had never before suffered an illness and had never, before the illness that took his life, required the services of a physician.

Born in New York State January 9, 1849, Smith was one of the nine children of Trowbridge and Rhoda Nichols. At the age of 10 he came to Michigan with his parents and settled on a farm near the Ionia-Montcalm county line.

On December 8, 1875, he was united in marriage to Julia Walker of Orleans, who has been his faithful companion in their 63 years of married life and who survives him. Two children were born to them, a daughter, Ola, who later became Mrs. Peter Martin, and a son, Ross, who died in 1898 at the age of 19. The couple also had an adopted son, Willis, at present a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, and who because of illness was unable to attend the funeral.

For 63 years the couple have resided on the same farm to which they went immediately following their marriage.

Mr. Nichols was a man who cared little for things outside his home, and the woods and fields which he loved. Wise was he in the lore of the out-of-doors and the youthful trapper and hunter asking advice from his elders was usually admonished to "ask Smith Nichols." Early in his life he learned the stone masons trade and built the foundation for many of the older houses in town. The monument which marks his grave was chiseled by his own hand from a hugh [sic] field stone shortly after the death of their son Ross. Last summer, at the advanced aged of 89, he made the markers for his own grave and that of his wife.

Besides the widow, the daughter and the adopted son, Mr. Nichols is survived by a brother, Cary, of Ionia, 4 grand-children, 5 great-grand-children and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Fales Funeral Home with Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating. Burial was in the family lot in the old cemetery in the southeast part of the city. Six nephews, Roy Nichols of Grand Rapids, Myrn Nichols of Ionia, Ernest Leach of Orleans, Clement Dexter of Chicago, Pete Timmers of Fremont and Austin Dexter of this city, acted as pall bearers.
_____________________

rom "Belding Banner News" [Belding, Ionia Co, MI], 14 Dec 1944:

GRIM REAPER SUMMONS RESIDENT

Mrs. Julia Nichols passed away very suddenly Monday morning at her home, 820 James St. She spent the day and had dinner on Sunday with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Vern LaDow, and was taken ill that afternoon with an attack of acute indigestion which resulted in her death.

With her husband, the late Smith Nichols, she spent her entire married life at their farm home north-east of the city, moving to her town residence about three years ago. She would have been 88 years old today. Her only child is Mrs. LaDow and she leaves four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at Fales funeral home with burial in the old Belding cemetery. Rev. Clyde Flewelling will officiate at the service.
____________________

I have located the WILSON and TOW families in Evergreen, Montcalm County in the 1910 census. However, both families cannot be found in the 1920 census. I believe Joseph and Sarah Wilson as well as William Tow died around this time. Is there a death index I can access or can someone look up these names. I am unfamiliar with resources or genealogy groups available in the Montcalm area. Any help will be appreciated.
Frances Cope, California
