I'm not positive, but it seems like about a year ago I came across this Twp name and found the answer in the 1904, I believe, Atlas showing Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties. In the introduction it stated the Krakow Twp was changed to Vienna Twp. I may be wrong but it seems to me that was correct.

You might also try Find-a-Grave on the internet. It is free. Also use your address on the search engine and put in Lewiston Cemetery (there will be two both considered Lewiston). I and some friends are taking pictures of all the markers. We are not yet finished.

Hillman Cemetery is called Hillman-Rust Cemetery and is north of Hillman, MI. Across the street is St Augustine Catholic Cemetery. Some of these graves are at the site of Find-a-Grave on the internet. Some are information is found by putting in the name of cemetery in the address portion of your search engine. I and a group of friends are planning to publish books containing pictures of all the markers in both cemeteries later this year with info on where obituaries, death records, etc can be located. Hope this helps you

I don't have anything to add to your query, but Ella Shavalier appears to be the daughter of my great aunt, Mary Shavalier, whose mother, Mary Mabie, various spellings, was my great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Mabie, who married my great grandfather, Jacob Rice, originally from Wuerttemburg, Germany, immigrating in 1850, destination unknown, but appears in 1870 married to a girl from Wheatfield, Niagara Co., NY, with 4 or 5 children on the 1870 census of Vernon, Shiawasee Co., MI, after which she takes the two girls and smallest child, born in 1869, and leaves Jacob. Daughter, Mary Shavalier's death certificate verifies lineage as does her brother, Ed D..
Jacob Rice entered the Civil War in 1860's in Wheatfield, NY. Children all seem to be born along the east coast of Michigan with the last, Ed D. born in Corunna, and dying there. Jacob dies at his son, Otto's home, who happens to be by great grandfather. We loose Jacob in the 1880 census.
His occupation was a hoopmaker. In 1900, Jacob claims he is a widower. We don't know where Mary Elizabeth Mabie Rice went to all those years. Ella seems to be the grandaughter of Jacob and Mary.
I don't know if this gives you any pieces of your puzzle but good luck, maybe through this we will both find puzzle pieces.
s.

You can order the death cert from the county clerks office.

You can try contacting the local public library.
The reference or genealogy department might have a death index for the county
or an obit index from the local newspaper.

You could also try contacting the Montmorency genealogy society.
They may have volunteers who would be willing to help you with this research.

My grand father was Allen Klein, eldest son of Philip Klein. A few years ago the magazine from Mio Michigan, formerly the North Wodos Call, did a series of extensive atricles on the Klein's of Rust Township in Montmorecy County. You may be able to find reprinted information in there. I believe they came out in 2001-2003 time frame. Has some great pictures too. I always wondered what happened to Nicholas Klein. It is my understanding he moved back to Ontario, Canada, near Waterloo. The Richard Klein family did a lot of extensive research as did cousin Gladys Klein (Lyle's wife). Both numbers may be found in the Atlanta phone directory.

I am in desperate need of help. My grandfather was given up by his biological parents on December 12, 1918 to the Midwife that helped.

The story goes, that William Sherman McClain (1874 - 1939) and Ella Shavalier McClain (1883 - 1930) were very poor and already had a number of children.

John H McClain
George Lewis McClain
George McClain
Mary McClain
Blanch McClain
Lyman H McClain

My grandfathers adopted mother was the midwife (Rachel Nutter) for Ella Shavalier McClain. If anyone has heard stories from the above brothers or sisters, please message me or email at lynn12976@gmail.com. I really want to find my grandfather's biological family. He did make a trek up to Michigan around 1955 - 1957 and possibly did meet a sibling. I have photos of my grandfather. My uncle did do a DNA test on the first 12 markers (hope to do the 37 and 67 soon)on Family Tree DNA. One of the photos might be one of the above siblings mentioned.

If there are any male descendants of the above siblings, any info will help.

Any information will greatly be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Linda M.
Hello,

Yes, this helps a great deal. Thank you very much for pointing out these sources. Since 2008 I had found the death of John P. Stevens/Stephens, Frances’ first husband, in 1914 in Ann Arbor. I had also found her remarriage in 1915 to William J. Lucas and this couple in the 1920 census. I did not notice however Daniel D. and James H. listed as “Smiths” in the next household.

Would you know how to contact any of the descendants of Daniel D. or James H. Stevens/Smith?

Thanks again,
Marjean
My gg grandmother is Mary P McMurphy, daughter of Martha Learn, married to James D (Duncan) McMurphy. Frances McMurphy is her sister.
Saw your post, then went to a leaf on Frances in tree and found matching Tuttle family tree showing Frances' marriages. see http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13752561/family?fpid=5196879

Have researched and found that
Daniel D Stevens Smith - 1920 Federal Census Shows Adopted Son with New name of Smith Information from Tuttle Family Tree http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3693737/person/-1678428278?st...
Hope this helps,
Joanne Cosgrove

I am seeking information about a "woodsman" Carmen (?)
I posted this at another genealogy website;

Well, I called the county clerk's office and asked for some assistance. The nice lady on the phone said that they really didn't do anything over the phone, but that I should fill out a form on their website. It would cost $5 for the search and $10 if I wanted a copy. If they didn't find one, she said that I would get $10 back. As we both said, that is a lot better deal than going through the State of Michigan (they want $26 with NO chance of a refund, full or partial).

>There are 2 trees shown on Ancestry with his name--maybe one is yours??? It's a private tree. The other states h died Oct 1897 in Vienna Twnshp.

One of them is my tree and the other tree belongs to another cousin that got their information from me. Dead end there.

I'll give a shot with mailing $15+postage to the county clerk's office. At least if I strike out that way, I'll get $10 back.

Montmorency's website states they have death certifs from 1881. Clerks phone number is 989-785-8022. Copies-$8.00.

Contact RAOGK (Random Acts of Geneologial Kindness) They have a website. I believe the person is Barb Burns that will do look ups in Montmorency County.

Montmorency Historical Society in Hillman--President is Florence Tripp--989-742-4218.

There are 2 trees shown on Ancestry with his name--maybe one is yours??? It's a private tree. The other states h died Oct 1897 in Vienna Twnshp.

A note about the census------I have found some of my relatives listed as "widow, widower". The TRUTH is that they were not a widow (er) at all, but were actually divorced. Their "deceased spouse" was actually alive and well and listed on the same census!!!!!!! Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing "divorced" anywhere on the census.

Hope something here helps you.

Jennifer G.

>Try not to blow your money for a certificate that may have never been filed.

Yeah, especially at $26 a pop via the state! As I semi-mentioned in my other post to you, the time of the year might have something to do with it and also the area. Although, they live only 6 miles as the crow flies from the county seat.

>Back in those days, however, local newspapers did report deaths and the dates...

Well, to see those local papers, I think that my best luck would be up there and I am 900 miles south.

>Another place for deaths in that area is: pilot.familysearch.org/

Been there, done that. My luck there wasn't as good as the State of Michigan site.

Thanks for your suggestions.

>If they don't have a record, then neither does the state.

I was beginning to think that myself especially after spending half a day or so going through every combination at the State of Michigan website. Also, the time of year might have something to do with the apparent lack of a death certificate. Winters in the northern Michigan can be a real PITA.

I'll give the county clerk a try next week. With the name that I am looking for, they might recognize something.
