Sheon and Sullivan families of Muskegon info.?

I`m trying to establish where in Ireland my family came from, but the farthest back I can go is with two men who settled in Muskegon:

Michael Sullivan (b. 1839 in Ireland) immigrated to the U.S. abt 1848; the earliest evidence of his presence in Muskegon I have is the 1870 Census (listed as a saloon keeper). I believe his wife`s name was Mary Lynch, who also had immigrated from Ireland in 1855. Their children were Catherine, Hannah/Anna, Mary, and Michael L.

Charles John Sheon married Michael and Mary Sullivan`s eldest daughter Catherine (sp?; he was born abt 1859 in Vermont, and his father was also originally from either the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Their children were William, Marguerite, James Herbert, and Kathleen.

I was hoping to follow both men`s tracks prior to living in Muskegon; I don`t have specifics about their own parentage, and if both came to Michigan alone or accompanied by family. Sheon is also a bit unusual spelling; I believe it to be a derivative of "Sheehan", and "Sullivan" was very likely "O`Sullivan"; it`s my guess that the changes in spelling were made after they settled down in Michigan.

If anyone could help me out with some sort of lead, particularly in looking up marriage records, vital records, etc. prior to 1870/1880, I would be most grateful.
