Sheon and Sullivan families of Muskegon info.?

I`m trying to establish where in Ireland my family came from, but the farthest back I can go is with two men who settled in Muskegon:

Michael Sullivan (b. 1839 in Ireland) immigrated to the U.S. abt 1848; the earliest evidence of his presence in Muskegon I have is the 1870 Census (listed as a saloon keeper). I believe his wife`s name was Mary Lynch, who also had immigrated from Ireland in 1855. Their children were Catherine, Hannah/Anna, Mary, and Michael L.

Charles John Sheon married Michael and Mary Sullivan`s eldest daughter Catherine (sp?; he was born abt 1859 in Vermont, and his father was also originally from either the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Their children were William, Marguerite, James Herbert, and Kathleen.

I was hoping to follow both men`s tracks prior to living in Muskegon; I don`t have specifics about their own parentage, and if both came to Michigan alone or accompanied by family. Sheon is also a bit unusual spelling; I believe it to be a derivative of "Sheehan", and "Sullivan" was very likely "O`Sullivan"; it`s my guess that the changes in spelling were made after they settled down in Michigan.

If anyone could help me out with some sort of lead, particularly in looking up marriage records, vital records, etc. prior to 1870/1880, I would be most grateful.

Big houses in Muskegon....

Hello there.......A couple times a week, I drive thru the area around Hackley
Hospital - Muskegon High School. There are SO many BIG houses! What I wouldn't give to go thru them....!!
Lots of 3 story homes on Peck St and Sanford St. My question is ......... what
was this area in it's hey-day? A main road that connected Muskegon
to the Heights? Why are there so many big homes along these streets? My
VanderVeere family lived at 39 Delaware back in the early early 1900's
and it seemed that quite a few family members must have lived there, so I'm
thinking the house must have been big. I've driven Delaware St., but
I'm not sure exactly where this house would have stood, as many of the lots are
empty now. Also, I seem to remember that there was a number
change for the streets in the 20's ???

Any ideas??

Thanks!
Joyce
-

Looking For Descendants of Theo Carrier Jones and Clarice Jayne Jones Mason of Muskegon

Theo Carrier's mother Clarice Way Carrier died in 1910 when Theo was a child and her parents Fred and Clarice were living in Boyne City, Michigan. Clarice is one of the eight children of Lewis and Josesphine Patterson Way of Alden, Rapid City, and later Traverse City. I would like to pass the Way family history on to Theo's descendants. I am also interested in learning what happened to Theo's brother Gerald called Jack. In the 1920 census he is living in Traverse City with his Way grandparents but vanishes after that. I would also like to know what happened to Theo's father Fred. I have a great wedding picture of Theo and Fred and the whole clan. My line is from Clarice's Way Carrier's sister Luella.

POW/MIA Korean War, Muskegon Co. TAYLOR

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Muskegon County, Michigan as his home of record.

Soldier: NORMAN JANES TAYLOR
Born: November 2, 1931 Caucasian
Date of loss: JAn. 1, 1951 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 102 families in Michigan that have not been located. There is one family from Muskegon County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
1928 OBIT. - AUGUSTA (COLEMAN) LAUTERBERG (1842-1928), Whitehall, Muskegon Co., MI - PIONEER

Mrs. Augusta LAUTERBERG aged 85 years, 6 months & 15 days, passed away Sunday noon July 8th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George BUTTLEMAN, after a serious illness of eleven weeks.

Augusta COLEMAN was born at North Hausen in Hartz, Germany 1842. She was united in marriage to August LAUTERBERG in 1865 and migrated to this section of America in 1867 and has lived here about sixty years, except for a short period when they resided in Wisconsin.

Mrs. LAUTERBERG was one of the original pioneers of this community, experiencing the activity of the lumbering days and early farm development. Welcoming first the railroad, schools, telephones, automobiles, paved highways and electricity, knowing these all meant progression.

She was a devoted christian being a faithful attendent of Methodist E. Church.

Those left to mourn to her loss are two daughters, Mrs. Wm. ROELL of Cadillac, Mrs. George BUTTLEMAN of Claybanks; three sons, Henry of Carlock, Charles of Whitehall and August of Claybanks; thirteen grand children and ten great grand children, besides a wide circle of friends.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Montague M.E. Church, Rev. Wilfred Eley officiating. Burial took place in the Oakhurst Cemetery, Whitehall.

******************

NOTE: This handwritten obituary was found in an old cigar box. I probably attained it at an auction, but I no longer recall.

Using Augusta's birth year, her age at death and the 10,000-year calendar found at http://www.calendarhome.com/tyc/original.html, I discovered she died July 8, 1928.

And using her age at death (years, months & days) and the birth date calculator found at http://www.angelfire.com/va/ValsGenealogyPage/Calculator.htm..., I came up with Augusta's birth date as being December 23, 1842.

I am not related to this family, therefore I can offer you no further assistance.

They were parents of my grandmother Elsie Johnson Osborn. Martha is buried in White Hall. She died 1n 1883.
My great-great grandmother's name was Berthe(Bertha) Peterson. She immigrated from Norway to Muskegon, where I believe she died. I have obtained a death certificate for a Berthe Peterson, who died in Muskegon on 11 Aug 1917. Unfortuneately, the death record does not give me enough information(ie, name of informant) for me to know for sure if this is the death record for my great-great grandmother. Would someone be kind enough to find an obituary for the Bertha Peterson who died 11 Aug 1917 in Muskegon and send me the information contained in it? If I had more information, I could determine if this is, in fact, my great-great grandmother.

VandenBosch Family, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan

I am looking for a family book compiled after 1953 by Elizeth Demots-DeKriaai and Tillie DeKam. The book was compiled after the Minnesota Branch of the VandenBosch family made a trip to Muskegon Michigan in August of 1953.
Now the only Elizabeth DeDraai I can come up with is Elizabeth Demots who married William DeKraai. Elizabeth was b in 1896, and was the daughter of Anna VandenBosch and John Demots. The Tillie DeKam I can't place. There is Ella VandenBosch who married Dowa DeKam and also lived in Minnesota, can anyone help with this?
Was there a family reunion that year? Family members made promises to write their life stories. Were there pictures taken at this time?
This would be a good book to share with the family.
Any help is appreciated, you can email me direct at gasladysocal@msn.com.
Thanks Jeanette VandenBosch

Pauline (MYERS) DePEW / DePUE (1898-????)

I am seeking information on Pauline (MYERS) DePew. She was born in Anderson, Madison, Indiana on 25 Aug 1898. (birth record = father: William H. Myers; mother: not identified).

In the obituary of her step-mother, Lucile Myers (1875-1926) who was murdered in Hammond, IN on 21 Mar 1926, Pauline is identified as a step-daughter living in Muskegon, Mich. No additional information was given in the obituary. I have identified a Pauline DePue living in Kalamazoo, Mich in the 1920 and 1930 federal census. Her husband is identified as Wilbur DePue. I am not sure that this is the same Pauline that I am seeking. Can you help by identifying the parents of Pauline DePue who was living in Kalamazoo in the 1920's and 1930's? Is there a city directory that can verify this family was not living in Muskegon in 1926.

Here is an extract from the obituary:
"She is survived by a step-daughter, Mrs. Pauline DePew of Muskegon, Mich.; a daughter, Mildred Myers, 24 years old, and three sons, William, 21 years old; Robert, 19 years old, and Joseph, 16 years old."

Son, William, age 21, is my deceased father. Unfortunately, he never spoke of his half-sister so I do not have any additional information to offer.

Hi, I searched through some of my Grandmothers papers and found some additional Cogshall names that are related to Rose in my other post. They are: James H. Cogshall, Electra Cogshall, and Bela Laverne Cogshall.
I am sure of the spelling as I found a newspaper clipping and a legal document showing the name as Cogshall.
