I will ask my aunt the story that she's heard. She has traveled to MI and elsewhere to research this family quite a bit. I heard that the girls were left with the Roelich family in Russia and then came over to the US. She would LOVE to share the info she has found with you! I hope we can get in touch via e-mail.

The Roehlich family. Mary and Augusta are the adopted daughters. On the 1900 census, the name is spelled Rehlich. The couple who adoped them are Peter and Wilhelmina Rehlich.

Do you have censuses attached to them? The 1900 census has them listed as "adopted" and the 1910 census has "foster daughter". My sister-in-law's mother specifically stated that her mother Marie was taken in by a family. (Now I can tell her it wasn't a family, it was a couple who had no children). Rehlich are the people who took them in. The parents are a mystery. I am attempting to find out. The 1900 census has them living in extreme southwest Michigan, Berrien County. Makes me wonder where Marie's family came from. I spoke with my sister-in-law's mother yesterday afternoon, and she said they were driven to the Rehlich's and dropped off. The two families must have known each other in Russia. They may be related. Maybe Mrs. Rehlich was a sister of Marie and Augusta's parents or Mr. Rehlich was the brother of their mother, something like that. Maybe they were just friends. This is a brick wall that will take time.

According to my sister-in-law's mother (age 93), both Mary and Augusta were adopted by the Rehlich family. She says that Mary was Marie. Marie is this elderly lady's mother. The story as she knows it is Augusta and Marie's real parents drove to Michigan and dropped the kids off at the Roelich home, then drove to Pennsylvania. The girls never heard from them again. I am attempting to find out who her mother's parents really are.

I believe that Augusta Rehlich was the daughter of Peter and Vilhelmina Rehlich, early pioneers of Bruce Crossing. Their farm was located one mile south of Bruce Crossing. According to the 1920 federal census, Peter and Vilhelmina arrived to US from Russia in 1900 and were naturalized in 1905.

There was a small community of Germans from Russia (Volga Deutsch) in Bruce Crossing. They formed the Bethany Lutheran Church (Wisconsin Synod). Prior to having a resident pastor, services were conducted by reading from Luther's Postillas. Mrs. Rehlich was the appointed reader for these services.

Jim

Looking for info on ancestors of Joseph Keller and Augusta Roelich. Augusta Roelich may have immigrated from Luthiania and Joseph Keller from Prussia. They may have live in Bruce Crossing Michigan in the early 1900's then later moved to Plainfield WI. They are burried in Clintonville,WI.
Joseph Keller born February 20, 1888 and Augusta born January 29, 1892

Jalmer pleaded guilty and spent the rest of his life in a hospital - I think mostly at Ionia which was a hospital for the insane. Although my great-aunt said in later years, he seemed not to understand what happened to cause him to kill his family. And I believe they also found in later years that he had some sort of brain tumor that was removed although the doctors said that it wouldn't have made him do it.

Very sad situation and I remember my grandparents talking about it as they were neighbors.

James Boze died in 1877 in Ontoganon County, MI.
I'm trying to find a spouse and children for him to determine if he is the same as my James Boase.
My James Boase was born in 1816ish in Camborne, Cornwall, England. He married Eliza Uren in 1838 England. His children that I believe came over with him from England were Eliza Ann, Martha Jane and William. I believe they came from England to Virginia to Calumet, Michigan.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello to any who read this, I have in the meantime found the hometown of my Gottlieb Koch, whom I still believe to be the same person working as a miner in the 1860 census in Ontonagon County. He came from Pfaffenhofen, Oberamt Brackenheim, Wuerttemberg, Germany and was born 18 Sept 1831 to parents Johann Michael Koch and Sophia Toberer.
I now believe the other two Kochs I mentioned are not related at all-- Leopold and Franz Koch came from another part of Wuerttemberg, Munderkingen.
So far I only know of Gottlieb's older sister emigrating to the US, Sophia Barbara, b 1814, married to Johannes Koch, who emigrated in 1868 to Detroit, MI.
Thanks for any further information on any of these.

Hi

My name is Chris Carlson, I came upon this message when I was searching for any information about my mother's grandmother's family. I have very little information on my mother's mother's side of the family, since she died when my mother was quite young. From the information (question) you posted here, I am guessing that your grandmother (Lillian) and my mother's grandmother (Adele) were sisters. I would like to get in contact with you and see if you can fill me in on any information you may have about the family history and geneology. My email address is: c_carlson at gmx dot com

PS: I was wondering if you did get a copy of the picture of the farmstead?

Thanks Chris

I was aware of those siblings, but was looking for a Charles Supple who went to live with another family and changed his name to Miller. Perhaps this is not the correct Thomas Supple. Charles Miller's obit gave his brother's name as Thomas Supple of Ontonagon, MI, and I have been unable to find another person of that same name, born in the 1870s.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately, the obituary made no reference to siblings who predeceased him, and that could have linked him to the person I've been researching. I appreciate your effort.

Thomas Supple, 91, Pioneer Resident Dies April 23

Thomas Supple, 91 year old pioneer resident of Ontonagon passed away at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, April 23. He had been in failing health and had been hospitalized for the past week.

Mr. Supple was born in London, England on March 27, 1872 and came to Ontonagon as a nine year old boy with his parents, pioneer residents John and Mary (Goard) Supple. He was married to the former Anna Belle Foster on August 3, 1998 with the Rev. D. Hassler Glass of the Methodist Church performing the ceremony.

During their active years, Mr. and Mrs. Supple operated a second hand store and also a boarding home on the main street. Upon retiring they purchased their present home at 106 Mercury Street. On Sunday, August 3, 1958 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a reception at their home. His wife, Belle, preceded him in death on December 19, 1958.

Their only child, Thomas, an adopted son, was killed in an automobile accident in 1945.

His only known survivors are two grandchildren, Mrs. David (Sue) Nelson of Portland, Oregon and Douglas Kerseg, an instructor in the Gary, Indiana schools.

The Allen Cane Funeral Home opened to friends Wednesday
evening.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the funeral home with the Rev. James P. McKeever to officiate. Burial will be in the family lot of Riverside Cemetery.

The pallbearers are Tom Hamilton, Ellsworth Hamilton, Edward Joos, David Hunt, Chester Davison and Alfred Eddy.

From the Ontonagon Herald, Thursday, April 25, 1963.

In his wife's obituary, it states that the son, Thomas Supple, was killed in 1935. Keep in mind that the people writing these obituaries are probably not family members so the information might be incomplete. And even if the grandchildren gave the information, it didn't sound like they were very close.

The problem is that because Charles Miller assumed a different surname, he is not traceable to any other family members on census records. His brother Thomas Supple of Ontonagon, MI and a sister, Lillian Joslin of Mapleton, IA, were found in his obituary. The obit didn't mention the names of his parents or any siblings who may have predeceased him. I was hoping that Thomas Supple's obit would mention a brother, Charles Miller, and thus I would know I had the right Thomas Supple.

Thank you for the information about Thomas Supple. I am still looking for his obituary to see if there is a mention of a younger brother, Charles, who changed his last name to Miller. In Charles Miller's obit is given the name of his brother as Thomas Supple, of Ontonagon, MI. It looks like Thomas Henry Supple might be the correct person, but nothing in the info you gave me can confirm it.
