Henry’s death record lists his parents as John CARLOUGH and Jane. I have not yet been able to place Henry’s father in with the rest of the CARLOUGH family tree.
Death of Reuben GRIGGS

On Friday, August 27, occurred the death of one of our pioneer settlers, Reuben GRIGGS, of Owosso township. He was born in Herkimer county, N.Y., July 18, 1804, and came to Michigan in 1836. At this time but three families were living in Owosso, and he, accompanied by Abraham WILKINSON cut a road through the woods to his farm, three and one half miles west of Owosso, in which neighborhood he has since resided.

Mr. GRIGGS did his part in converting the staunch forest into rich, productive farms, and took active part in making Owosso township what it now is; he was one of the active, energetic business men of the town, and is well known throughout the adjoining counties.

For many years he followed the life of a drover and is well known throughout our neighboring places as an honest dealer and a successful farmer. Of the many old settlers of this township but two are now living. Mr. GRIGGS was 82 years of age and had enjoyed good health until the last few years. He lived a married life of 56 years and now leaves a wife and four children to mourn the loss of a dear husband and a kind father. The funeral services were held at the house, Sunday, Aug. 29. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to their last resting place.

We shall always remember his kindness and mourn the loss of a highly esteemed neighbor.
--Will LAUNSTIEN.

[Owosso Weekly Press [Shiawassee Co., MI] Weds. 8 Sep 1886, p1.]

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=Kr3pDLWb32UC&dat=1...

hi, thanks for all of the info.
Patrick's death record comes from the Shiawassee County Clerk , he died on April 5th, 1868 (76 yrs old). It's also on GENDIS (http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/gendisx/scripts/individual.asp?U...)
Patrick's wife went by Catherine or Mary - I know nothing else about her, other than she died before Patrick did.
Patrick's daughter, also named Catherine, was born March 28, 1861 in Ireland, location unknown, and died 7/28/1935 (info from Michigan Dept of Health certificate of death). She was married to Jeremiah Dwyer (b. 5/5/1822 Tipperary Ireland, d.11/5/1892 Shiawassee County) Both of them are buried in Mt Elliot in Detroit as are Patrick and Catherine Wade.
Thanks so much for your help.

Patrick & Catherine are not listed in Mich during that time period.

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

NEED DOB + birthplace for Catherine Wade & Jeremiah Dwyer

Need DOB + birthplace for Catherine/Mary Wade

Hello, looking for information on Patrick or Catherine(possibly Mary) Wade, who lived in Shiawassee county. I have found Patrick's death record, 4/5/1868 (Shiawassee county) but am trying to find an obit or any other info about him and his wife Catherine/Mary. Patrick was born in Ireland in approx 1794, I do not know his parent's names. Patrick's daughter, Catherine married Jeremiah Dwyer. Any help or suggestions appreciated! Thanks, Mary

Mary Ann (WILCOX) DOWELL, d. May 1875

Found this obituary while I was searching for another; I am not related to this family--just passing some information along in case it may be of help to someone (the two sources conflict somewhat):

Byron Items--Sad Death of a Young Bride
Three weeks ago, April 27th, while Mrs. Mary DOWELL, a young married lady, sixteen years old and but two months a bride, was helping her mother make soap, her clothes took fire and were burned entirely off from her. Her father, Mr. WILCOX, in trying to save his daughter burned his hands and wrists fearfully. It was not thought, at the time, that Mrs. DOWELL could live more than a day or two, but she lived till Saturday last, dying happy at 11 o'clock a.m. She was remarkably patient through her sufferings for they were fearful. Yesterday the funeral was held at the Lovejoy school house, Elder SAWYER officiating. Her parents and husband have the sympathies of all. At the time of the accident to the deceased a load of household goods was standing at her father's door ready to be taken to her new home that was to be. Such is life. We know not what a day may bring forth.
[The Owosso Weekly Press [Shiawassee Co., MI] Weds. 26 May 1875, p3.]

From the MI Genealogical Death Indexing System:
Mary Ann DOWELL
Date of death: 17-May-1875
Ledger Page: 89
Record Number: 1467
Place of death: Vernon
County of Death: Shiawassee
Sex: Female
Race: White
Marital Status: Married
Age: 14 years 8 days
Cause of Death: Burned to Death
Birthplace: Canada
Occupation: Housekeeper
Father's Name: Stephen WILCOX
Father's Residence: MI
Mother's Name: Elizabeth WILCOX
Mother's Residence: MI
Date of record: 12-Jun-1876

Help with Greenwood and Newburg Cemeteries

I have a 3rd-great grandmother that I just "discovered" died in Shiawassee county. Her name was Eunice VINCENT. I have a small obituary for her from the Owosso Evening Argus in 1894 that states she died in Shiawassee Twp., but it does not state where she was buried. She had a daughter who died in 1875 who was buried in Newburg cemetery, and another daughter (at whose home she died) who is buried in Greenwood cemetery, but I have not found any record of her listed in the online cemetery records like findagrave or the MI Tombstone Project. I know Newburg is a small cemetery and Greenwood is huge (best I can recall), so my guess is Greenwood. If there is anyone who is willing to search either of these two cemeteries for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for your consideration.

I'd posted that query 5 years ago and hadn't researched that family since.
I have a few questions if you don't mind:
Did you locate an individual with the spelling on the bottle?
What was the prescription for, date filled?
Where was the house the bottle was found?
You mentioned the spelling being different, however I'm curious if it was just misspelled. I have seen our name spelled and misspelled so many different ways!
Of their 15 children, 1/2 the males chose KEBLER and the other 1/2 KIEBLER. Their father was the immigrant ancestor and he chose Kiebler

Benjamin was my great grandfather. I have done a great deal of research on Lyman (very fascinating man!) Would be happy to share what I have.

You mentioned Lyman's interest in the family and surveys he did. I read something about this in an article years ago that he wanted to submit the information for a study, but I'd never been able to locate any other reference.

You said, "they are interesting to read" Does that mean you've read them? Do you have copies or know where I could obtain them?? Its highly unusual for 15 children to not only survive, but from what I've been able to ascertain, all of them were SUCCESSFUL as well.

Hi:

My father was Melvin P. Aselton, Jr. who was born March 7, 1911 and died May 1984. I recently retired and decided it was a good time to try to trace our family.

Dad's father was Melvin P. Aselton and his mother was Nellie Gilmore (from St. Caesar Canada). Our father always told us our name had been changed from Van Ysselstein and we always thought he was kidding. It looks like he wasn't. The little bit of tracking I have been able to do shows a link between Canada, Vermont, and Michigan for our family.

The 1880 Census in Chesahing, Saginaw, Michigan lists a Melvin Aselton born in Canada in 1835. It also shows that both his mother and father were born in Canada. He was 45 yrs old at that time, a farmer, and married.

It sounds like we are talking about the same family..............do you have anything in your notes about someone that was hung for stealing horses....supposedly on the way home from the Civil War? This was another story Dad used to tell us.

How are you related? I would greatly appreciate any info you might be able to share with me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Somehow, I think Edgar and Melvin are related.

Judy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alexander "Kellos" is an ag. lab. at Flushing, Shiawassee in 1860 along with wife "Louisa". This turns out to be Martha Louisa Cooley, b.ca.1831 in NY.
Children in 1860: Edwin "Kellus" age 3 (on a new page) and Isabella age 10m, both born in Michigan. Listed befere these 2 are Charles Wood age 8 b.NY and Lillie age 5 b.Michigan. It's unclear whether "Wood" is a given name or a surname or whether Lillie is a Wood or a Kellas.

Alexander and Martha seem to have 3 more children:
John William Kellas b.Jun 1861 Michigan d.28 Dec 1909 Manhattan was the 1st husband of Anna Bertha Marie Lunau. Edwin/Edward Kellas was her 2nd husband.
Martha Margaret Kellas b.Jan 1967 Flushing, Shiawassee.
Mina Ellen Kellas b.27 Apr 1871 Caledonia Shiawassee.

Seeking information about Alexander Kellas who died at Montezuma, NY 27 Apr 1907. So far I have found his gravestone at Montezuma Rural Cemetery, the death notice in the local paper, his Civil War service record (resident at Hazelton, Michigan & joined B.Cy., 1st Engineer Regt. Michigan Volunteers), and the 1900 census where he was a farmer just south of Montezuma village with wife Eliza A.
Apparently he married her ca.1894; she must have been a widow, born Jul 1844 in NY with 6 children, only one surviving.
I know that Alexander must be the son of John Kellas & Margaret Grant b.23 Feb 1828 at Poneed farm, Cabrach, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The 1900 census has Alexander coming to America in 1830, which is indeed the last year of Scottish records relating to his parents, who had a daughter Isobel at Poneed in April of that year.
I'm looking for the surname of his wife and any pre-1900 history for him. Mainly I am interested in what happened to his parents John Kellas b.Dec 1793, Margaret Grant b.Jun 1800, brother John b.5 Feb 1826, sisters Mary b.5 Feb 1828 and Isobel b.5 Apr 1830 - all from Cabrach, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Thanks in advance, Stuart Petrie

p.s. don't be confused by records pertaining to Alexander Kellas married to Elspeth Perry who farmed at Mooers Forks, Franklin, NY - he was a 4th cousin.

What I've generally found is that if a record is on, say page 327, if you click on the little right arrow at the top right hand side it will give you the other half of the page you need. See the example below

[Page 327] > [Page 328]
Left side of ledger Right side of ledger

I'm stuck! For some odd reason I can't seem to find my great grandparents on the 1930's census, OR the 1940's census. Everyone in my family that I've spoken to swears they were living in Shiawassee County, Michigan during that time but I have searched high and low with no luck. I do not have an EXACT location, so not sure what to do next. Here are the details of who I am searching for: my great grandparents: Raymond Dexter Farnham, born August 3, 1884 in Deerfield, Livingston County, Michigan, he died in Feb of 1972. His wife Effie Mae Smith, born June 25, 1902 in Alcona, Michigan, died September 8, 1972 in Ingham, Michigan. They had four children, Kathlyn (Wooden) Robert, Kleagle or Kay Sumner, and Mary Jane Brothers. Thanks for any help or tips about where I can search next.
