White Pigeon; Janet GUSHWA, 60, of White Pigeon, Mich., died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, Sept. 10, 2003, in White Pigeon Township.

She was born June 16, 1943, in Newton, Mass., a daughter of George and Virginia M. (DOOLEY) LINEHAN.

Janet resided in the White Pigeon and Sturgis area since 1968.

On Aug. 17, 1968, she married James GUSHWA at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis.

She was a graduate of Comstock High School with the class of 1961 and was valedictorian of her class, and she graduated from Western Michigan University where she received her teaching certificate. Following her graduation Janet taught for three years in the Allegan Public School District where she taught Spanish and math of several years and taught full time and substitute taught at Holy Angles Catholic School. She was very involved with her husband in the family farm operation.

Janet was extremely active in the Girl Scouts program, serving as troop leader, camp director, director of training, service unit manager, association manager and receiving numerous awards and certifications of her many years of dedicated work. Janet was also involved in the American Red Cross where she taught First Aid and CPR. For many years, she served as a 4-H leader, baked and decorated all types of cakes, taught the art of cake decorating, and enjoyed gardening. Janet had many interests and involvements but her true love and total dedication was her husband and family. She was always there for her family, weather it was handling the family and farm business or attending all of her children and grandchildren’s school and sporting events.

Surviving are; her loving husband of 35 years, James; two daughters and son-in-law, Karen and David YEARICKS of Constantine and Stacie SCHLABACH of Sturgis; two sons and daughter-in-law, David GUSHWA and Steven and Holly GUSHWA, both of Sturgis; 13 grandchildren; father, George LINEHAN of Merritt Island, Fla.; two sisters,, Judy LINEHAN of Merritt Island, Fla., and Norma L. LINEHAN of Elgin, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, William Joseph LINEHAN.

Friends and relatives may call after 2 p.m. today at the Hackman-Foglesong Funeral Home of Sturgis where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p. m. today and 11 a.m. –1:30 p.m. Saturday. Prayers before Mass will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with a procession to Holy Angels Catholic Church for the funeral Mass celebrating the life of Janet GUSHWA at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fr. Stanley Witek officiating. Graveside committal will follow the Mass at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Gushwa’s memory consider the Girl Scouts Singing Sands Association #8. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
