BLACK, CHAMBERLAIN, FREDLUND

Long Beach, Calif.; Arthur C. (Dick) BLACK, 102, formerly of Sturgis died July 2, 1994, at the Hacienda Convalescent Hospital, Long Beach, where he had been a resident the past two weeks.

He was born March 18, 1892, in Sturgis, a son of David and Emma (CHAMBERLAIN) BLACK.

He and his wife, Gertrude, had operated the Black Hat Shop in downtown Sturgis many years before selling the shop and moving to California in 1944.

He had been employed by several woodworking firms in the Sturgis area, including Aulsbrook and Jones. He retired in 1957 after working several years for the Packard-Bell Corporation in California. His mother’s family, the CHAMBERLAINS, were Sturgis settlers and had owned a farm west of town.

Surviving are five nephews, Elmer BLACK and Dennis BLACK, both of Three Rivers, Mich., Clarence BLACK, Miami, Fla., Robert BLACK and Richard BLACK, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and one niece, Marian FREDLUND, California.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis, with the Rev. Nelson Ray, Center Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements were handled by the Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home, Sturgis.
