Helena F. Dorsey - February 6, 1928 - July 10, 2012. Helena F. Harris was born February 6, 1928 in Ecorse Michigan.
She was the eldest child of Emma Gretchen Harris Vinegar and James William Harris.
She had three siblings, John H. Harris, Sr., L. Jaqueline Harris Hunter, and Guy A. Vinegar, son of Emma and John Boyd Vinegar, her mother's second marriage.
She attended and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1949 with a degree in Elementary Education.
She joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority while at Ohio State. She married Robert Sherwood Dorsey, upon their graduation from Ohio State. They were married for 63 years.
Helena was a devoted mother to her three daughters Jocelyn Dorsey, Karen Dorsey Bonner and Robin Dorsey Alexander. She taught generations of students from Cincinnati's Rockdale Elementary School and Westwood Elementary School.
She retired from teaching in 1989.
Helena was a member of "Couples Club", a group formed in the 60's of young African-American professionals who, because of segregation, developed their own social network and affiliations.
She also engaged her children in the Jack 'N Jill network. She was a member of The Cincinnati Chapter of Sophisticates, Inc. and The Cincinnati Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc.
Helena, has left a positive mark on the world.
She will be sorely missed by her daughters; Jocelyn Dorsey, Karen Dorsey Bonner, and Robin Dorsey Alexander; devoted sons-in-law, Robert Bonner and Eric Alexander; grandsons, Tewodros, (deceased) and Robert Fassil; great grandchildren, Zania, Jaquavious, Tewodros Jr., and Robert Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a huge extended family, and dear friends who have been and remained a part of her life for 84 years.
