Actually their last name was not Chaffee- that is an error on the census taker-they were the next stop on that street- Names were James Hollis, wife Jean Hollis, daughter Donna Jean and Doris Hollis... Isabella Batten was previously Isabella wright Hall and her husband Robert and their son Bob had come from Scotland in 1905.
I currently don't know when or where they married. The two don't show up on any of the Michigan marriage indexes. It's possible that the two may have been married out-of-state or in Canada.

There are a couple people I know that can look at the Burton Historical Collection directly.

Do you have their marriage record? Some places list the parents. Or if they married in a church, there may be a record of the parents' names.

He may not have been born in Detroit but a suburb. Or where he was born was later annexed by Detroit. Detroit grew a lot between 1900 and 1920-both population wise and land.

Since he died in 1936, he may not have registered for social security prior to his death but that could be another place to look. Think the cost is about $26 or $27.

http://www.ssa.gov/foia/

You might want to try to see if there is a listing in a Detroit City Directory for that time period. Contact the Burton Historical Collection to see if they would do a look-up. You can email them from the following:

http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/featuredcollection/burton-histo...

Got it from the www.seekingMichigan.org website which has images of death records from 1897 to 1920.

For deaths from 1921-1952, the Mormon Church's website www.FamilySearch.org has an index to deaths from 1921-1952. No images yet and the State only allows them to be posted after 75 years.

The Woodmere Cemetery is back operating their search engine again. That is where Annie is buried according to her death certificate. You might want to try looking there for other family members.

http://woodmerecemeteryresearch.com/

Wayve never remarried. Her last name was still shown as Martz when she died in 1989 at Kalamazoo. Three of her five children are still living, so I won't post their names. I believe one of them was adopted because he was born in 1948...well after Marty died. Two, Donald and Richard, both died in 2006. All of them were born in Kalamazoo.

The death certificate I have for Marty is from Indiana. It has "Unknown" for both of his parents and location of their births on the document. So far, I have not been able to find any listing for Marty on the Michigan Birth Index from 1867-1902. There were over 7,000 people born in Detroit in 1900 if you do a search without a surname.

Wayve's mother was married twice and her father four times.

I'm trying to find any additional information on a Marty M. Martz. According to his death certificate, he was born on March 22, 1900 in Detroit. I believe his middle name was Melvin. I'm trying to find out who his parents were although it's possible that he may have been adopted. No names are mentioned on the death certificate. Marty isn't listed on any of the U.S. Census records. He was married to Wayve M. Devall of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The two had at least four children. Marty was killed on August 27, 1936 in an accident at Rome City, Indiana. He is buried with his wife at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)

Re: Seeking Wayne County Divorce Records, 1884-1890

The only divorce records for Wayne County prior to about 1960 that I have been able to locate are at the State Vital Records office. The State of Michigan Archives has on microfilm, indexes of all divorces in Michigan, from 1897-1977. These indexes are alphabetical by year and quite easy to use. The Archives also has the records from 1897-1923 on microfilm.

Seeking Wayne County Divorce Records, 1884-1890

Does anyone know where I can find Wayne County divorce records for the period of June 1884 to March 1890? The Vital Records office has divorces filed with the state since 1897, so I'm wondering if another Wayne County source would have these earlier records. The couple lived in the Martinsville post office area of Sumpter, in Wayne County, at the June 1884 Michigan State Census. He remarried in March 1890 in Wyandotte, Wayne County, and she remarried in October 1890 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County. Thanks - any advice is appreciated!

I'm unsure as to how the 1940 census or findagrave would assist you with marriage records??

My suggestion would be to check the Canadian Marriages. I don't have a World Membership on Ancestry, so I can't view them myself. However, in my research I have a few family members born in Ontario, moved to Detroit, but married back in Ontario. If you have a World Membership, or know someone who does, it's worth a check just to make sure.

If you haven't already done so, you may also want to check FamilySearch.org, which has a good collection of Michigan Marriage records.

Good Luck!

Would like to find marriage if possible for Edward Miller and Emma Elliott nee Pickering. Know very little re Edward. Emma born 1877 Ontario Canada and married George Daniel Elliott. According to census George and Emma lived in Detroit. George died 29 Apr 1928 and in 1930 Emma is shown as Emma Miller with Edward living in Detroit. Assuming they married then marriage occurred 29 Apr 1928 - 1 Apr 1930.

Thanks for responding. I know the familysearch obit doesn't have everything. But I did learn where he died, which I didn't know before. I'm hoping to get his cause of death. I already have his parents & siblings names.

I'll check with the Washtenaw County Clerks office as you suggested. Before I knew he died in Ann Arbor, I was planing to check with Wayne County for his death certificate since that's where he lived. But it makes more sense to check where he died. Thanks for mentioning that.

One of my gggrandmother's remarried and went to Kansas in 1880 with her second husband-lived in Lincoln County and Ottawa County.

Maschke at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church

Hello, I am trying to find the birth location of my GG Grandpa. His name is William Maschke born Oct 13, 1862 in Germany/West Prussia and died May 26 1929 in Detroit. He is buried at Woodmere. He married his wife Bertha Schlopath in Germany/Prussia some time before Aug 1888. They came to the US in 1890 with 2 small children Helen and Emil and then had 7 more after settling in Detroit. All of the available census lists them as being born in either Germany or Prussia and William's death cert says West Prussia/Germany. Bertha's just says Germany. I believe that all of the kids that did marry got married in the church but I know for sure the oldest 2 did. Emil was born in May of 1890 and they landed in Nov 1890 so its possible that he would have been baptized in the church. I would love any help in tracking down any documents the church may have that may lead to a more specific birth place for them. Thank you. If more information is needed I will be more than happy to provide it.

I am trying to locate the Detroit cemetery where my John Kopydlowski was buried. He appears in the SSDI as John "Kopylowski" with a birth date of 1 December 1887 and a death date of December 1968. I have not found him in the database of the Mt. Elliott Cemeteries nor on the CD of the burials at Sacred Heart of St. Mary Cemetery. I have his marriage record to Agnes Jozwiak on 26 October 1910 and their census records for 1920, 1930 and 1940. If I had an exact date of death, I could seek his obituary. I would appreciate any suggestions for where to search next. I have not found a date or place of death for his wife Agnes either, and she is not in the SSDI. Thank you.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois

Our John Kopydlowski and Agnes Jozwiak were married in Detroit in October 1910. I have the marriage record. I have their 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records. I cannot find them in the 1940 census and do not see their death records in the Michigan Deaths 1921-1952 from Family Search. They do not appear in the burial records at the Mt. Elliot web site. Any suggestions for other places to search? Thank you.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois
IllinoisGenie(at)gmail(dot)com
