According to The Past and present of Lake County, Illinois : containing a history of the county--its cities, towns, &c., a biographical dire, James B. Brown left Clayton, NY as a sailor in 1837 (age 13), was promoted to mate at age 19 (c.1843),sailed as a mate for 2 terms, came to Chicago in 1844 and became a captain. He retired in Lake County in 1864.

His brother, John William Brown, is also listed as a "Lakes Captain" in Ancestry.com family trees. He is listed on the 1840 Census in Racine, Wisconsin as a mariner.

According to Brown family records, their father, William Brown (1786-1838) drowned in the St. Lawrence River off Clayton, NY on 9 Sep 1838.

Since both of William's sons became became lakes captains, I'd like to know if he was also in the GL shipping trade, and if his drowning might have been a shipwreck.

I'd love to find the names of the vessels for James and John, and William (if applicable).
