I'm now noticing how old this post is.

In case you still need it, here's more from Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS):

Hokan Harold Hokanson (died 1972)
married 24 March 1925 in Roseau County, Minnesota
Mary Rose O'Donnell (died 1990)

They had at least two children (per link below and per Minnesota Birth Index at Minnesota Historical Society) who are likely living.

Hokan Hokanson died 21 July 1972 in Baudette, Lake of the Woods, Minnesota. (Ah - So now I see why you posted in the Lake of the Woods message board.)

Below are two links to Ancestry message board discussions of this family. Both queries were posted by a cousin from Sweden.

LINK:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min...

LINK:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min...

A recap of Swan and Magda CHILDREN with names and DOB as found in the census with marriage info added:

Ingborge born about 1898 Sweden (Brita/Bertha m John McAnnany)
Martin born about 1900 Sweden
Hokan born about 1903 Sweden (m. Mary Rose O'Donnell)
Anna /Emma born abt 1908 Minnesota (Annabelle m James List)
Elmer Hokanson born about 1912 Minnesota (m Audrey Stein)
Alvin Hokanson born about 1915 Minnesota (m Rhoda Mae Heurd)

For more see: Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) online; Minnesota Historical Society (Births, Deaths, MN state census); Ancestry; and Family Search.

So that's a start at finding out about H. Hokanson. :D

Are you still searching for your uncle H. Hokanson uncle you were looking for. As you probably know, in Sweden there is a man's name Haakon or Hokan.

As you can see, the census says the family is from Sweden. I looked up Martin's World War I Draft record first, so I could get your grandfather's name, and from there I could look for your uncle H.
Hello Morten, I understand about computer issues. It was good to hear from you. I had to remember how to log in to answer your post, and work has been crazy busy. But when I saw Judy's post (Hi Judy), I thought I ought to respond to both of you.
Would you like a copy of the books on a cd or flashdrive? Which would be better for you? I could mail you either. I'll have to see if ancestry.com puts people in touch with one another so I could mail you some information.
If you google Jacob L. Skrivseth, you will find some interesting information. He was one of the brothers that first immigrated in 1869. Jacob L. became a photograher in the 1870's and a few historical articles about him can be found. Also, photographs that he took can be found. Its interesting to see the Skrivseth name on them.
Of course, their are many, many Skrivseth descendents in the US today.
Kind Regards,  Joan

Re: Julia Halverson 1837 - 1926 Need Obit

I'm not sure this is the same Julia Halverson, but it seems to fit. I have a website for the 27th Iowa Volunteer Infantry (Civil War). I have a Paul Hulverson in Company I. I have been researching the men of the 27th. Research on Paul Hulverson showed his name to be spelled Halverson and Holverson. His tombstone has Halverson. Paul Halverson was married to Julia and had one son Halver P. Halverson. They lived in Allamakee County, Iowa. Paul Halverson died on March 25, 1900 and is buried in Oakland Main Cemetery, Makee Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, On the 1900 census, Julia was living with her son Halver and his family in Allamakee County. Then in 1905 they were listed in Beltrami County, Minnesota. In 1920, she was living with her widowed daughter in law (again in Beltrami County, Minnesota.) After that I cannot find her on the census.

On the 1860 census in Allamakee County is Larson Olson (age 56, born Norway), Julia Olson (age 50, born Norway), Celia Olson (age 12, born Norway), Ole Olson (age 8, born Iowa), Julia Halverson (age 23, born Norway) and Halver Halverson (age 1, born Iowa.) Paul was not on this particuar census, but their son was already a year old. Unfortunately the 1860 census does not show relationships, but these names are similar to the names you mentioned. Are you sure they did not also use the name Olson? I do note in looking at the census index, that someone has put REMA in their name.

It appears to me that we could be researching the same family. What do you think?

Hi Joan.
Im terrible sorry you did not hear from me before now, but my computer collapsed and later I was not able to find back to this site.
I hope you had a great family reunion this summer.
Yea my mother is Liv (Skrøvset) Budal.
Last year I went to Bøfjorden where the Skrøvset farm are but I do not know the family and never met them. The family who lives there now are the same that bought the farm from Lars in 1870.
I went to Røros (city) this summer to see the church and the epitaph (painting) there. This painting from 1670 portrays Johannes and Elisabeth Irgens. They are Lars Skrivseth (born 1825) 5G grandparents.
I have a lot of information about the Skrøvset family back to 1400. What I´m looking for is information about the Skrivseth´s in America.

Kind regards Morten
The Bankton Cemetery has only 2 tombstones in it. If there are any unmarked graves there, it is unknown. My grandfather and gr grandmother both have stones there. My gr grandmother's stone is share with my parents as they were cremated. Mom said that I could put a stone at Gr Grandmother Sarah's grave and put her name and Dad's name on it too. Samuel E. Nelson, my grandfather and Sarah Nelson my gr grandmother have the only marked graves there. At the time of the resettlement, most of the graves were moved into Baudette to the Elm Creek Cemetery or elsewhere.

Minnesota Deaths And Burials 1835 - 1990 lists;

Julia Halverson, Born 1838, Died 07 Mar. 1926 in Gudria, Lake Of The Woods, Minnesota. Spouse: Halverson. Mothers Name: Julia Rema.

I am in need of an obituary or death record transcript to prove or disprove that this Julia Halverson is a match for the sister of my GG Grandmother and the following info;

L.O. and Guri Rema (Opheim) arrived in Allamakee Co., Iowa, in 1951, bringing four daughters with them. Two sons would be born there to this couple later. Their children were;

Julia, born 13 Dec. 1837, Norway; Tilda, Margaret, Cecile, Ole, and Tolef.

Julia married Paul Halverson on 26 Apr. 1857, in Allamakee Co., Iowa.

In 1912-1913 Julia is a widow living in Baudette, Minnesota.

This information is found in the biography of Julia's brother Ole L. Rema in the book Past And Present Of Allamakee County, 1913, Vol. 2, Biographies, by Hancock, and the entire contents of this biography can be read on the Allamakee County, Iowa, web site on the USGenWeb.

My research indicates that Julia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Margaret Strand (Rema), and brother Tolef.

Julia would have been survived by sisters Tilda Bryson (Rema)of Waterville, Allamakee Co., Iowa; Cecile Skinner (Rema) of Sioux Rapids, Buenna Vista Co., Iowa; and brother Ole L. Rema of Center Township, Allamakee Co, Iowa.

Note that I have seen Julia's sister Cecile name spelled many ways, including Sissil/Sissel/Sisse, etc.. And that Julia's mother's name is often Americanized as Julia as in the Minnesota Deaths And Burials 1835 - 1990 records cited above.

It is unknown where or when Paul Halverson died, or whether he and Julia had any children.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated !

Mothers Name: Julia Rema.

I am in need of an obituary or death record transcript to prove or disprove that this Julia Halverson is a match for the sister of my GG Grandmother and the following info;

L.O. and Guri Rema (Opheim) arrived in Allamakee Co., Iowa, in 1951, bringing four daughters with them. Two sons would be born there to this couple later. Their children were;

Hi Morten, according to the American Skrivseth books, Bastian was born on April 19, 1831, and today is the 19th. And then I found Liv, your mother, right? Born April 20th? Also, early birthday wishes to you. How much information or history do you have on your family, and ancestors that stayed in Norway? Is there any special information I can help you with? I'll be checking with my 2nd cousin, if we have any extra books. Or I may be able to send you a flash drive or a cd with at least some of the history. I could also send a copy of a family tree which dates back to 1340. My Dad sent his copy of the books to the relatives he kept in touch with, in or near Trondhjem. You said you visited the Skrovset farm; do you know the people there now? My parents visited and were inside the farm house in 1987. In July we will have our 9th family reunion. We meet every 4 years since 1979.

Best wishes to you and your family. Joan

Hello Joan. Thank you for responding. I am realy glad to hear from you.

I am Morten Budal. My mothers name is Liv Budal (Skrøvset) and here father was Bjarne Skrøvset. His father again is John Skrøvset and his father is BASTIAN LARSSON SKRØVSET 1831-1919.
I went to see the Skrøvset farm again last summer and I belive the house is the same that they left when they emigrated to America. Lars´ brother Bastian that stayed in Norway had a house there as well and never left the place. My grandfather and his father as well lived in the same area all years of their life. But my mother moved to Trondhjem and later to LIllehammer.

I belive we are 4th cousines / first cousines once removed. We have the same 4 x grandfather Lars Larsson Skrøvset (1805-1865).

Do you think its possible to buy a copy of the Skrivset book.

Best wishes from Morten

Hello, Joan here, I am one of your American relatives. Tore was my Great-Grandfather. His father was Lars. I believe Bastian was Lars brother that stayed in Norway. I've inherited the interest in family history from my Dad and my grandfather. Sadly, my Dad passed away last year and I've wanted to contact the relatives he corresponded with. My grandfather, Clarence, traveled twice in the early 1950's and 70's to Norway to visit relatives and trace the family history. My parents visited and had a fabulous time with relatives in Trondheim. They took my parents to the family home that still carries the name. We now have two editions of Skrivseth books with family trees, stories, and information. I found two Morten's under the descendants of Bastian, Lars brother. (Tore also had a brother named Bastian.) So I'm wondering if one of them is you! Best wishes, J.

Was my uncle , my father was Martin. His mother Magda died after watching J.F.Kennedy assen get shot. Too much for her, went to take a nap and never woke up. My Grandfather died before I was born- 1950, he was helping stomp out a grass fire and burnt his feet too bad and died. They were trying to contain the fire so it wouldn't spread to buildings. My mother told me when I was 12 they were from very influencial familys, and I never ask who, I found a little; Magda Neilson's family were in logging and Martin's father wes born in Bergden [?] Norway. Came to US in 1905 because of a family dispute. My brother Blanchard said Martin's father looked like King H. of Norway, and my brother Marlin insists we are related to the king, not the one elected in 1905.The one who resigned in 1905. I have two photos of my Grandfather, one in 1905 and one of he & Magda when old.Do you have any photos or more details on them ???A And, My neice Terasa mentioned a family home that was made into an Art Museum. Were there any Artist in the family? My sisters Lucile and Loretta and Marlin & I liked to draw and Blanchard did glassblowing & lace work and carving. My Dad Martin made violins,gunstocks and boats. One time he carved a deer jumping over a log into a gunstock. He said " I didn't know I could do that" I guess we got our artistic ability more from him, although mom [Naomi] use to draw what she called "Dolly Dimple" when I was young,and I'd design clothes for it.I've done portraits since I was 5. Now almost 62, and still like to draw when I get time.I'm currantly working on a portrait of Elvis Presley, he's 76 now nd still look good. He goes by the name of "Jon Cotner " on you tube and is a friend on my "MY Space" account. He wears a beard to cover his face some what, the portrait I'm workin on is with out his beard. He hade to drop out of site because of some bad people and he was also having big problems with his voice. I also have a You Tube Channel- ELMileyCBP and have lots of his music. But I'm also a Bible studient [ all ways learning]and that work is the most importaint- Matt.24:14 ;28:19,20 time is short Zeph.2:2,3 but also into alternative health, energy body work. It keeps me going, my sisters both died of cancer at 65. Loretta was 10 years older Than I & Lucile was 25 years older than I. Thanks ,Esther

I found out that Swan Hokanson died in Roseau, Mn. June 10, 1948 in a house fire. I have the names of 4 children, Martin, Hokan, Emma and Alvin. Not sure if that's correct. Please let me know if you can help me.

Sincerely,

Teresa Hokanson Roach

Hi again Joyce - I,m so curious now to see how we are connected! Albert Norander was my g-grandfather. He married Ida Worthington Danker, my Grandmother Smith's mother. My grandmother is Ida Mytrle Danker Smith of Williams, LOW, Minnesota. Let's get our information together and compare notes. I think I might have alot of things to share with you on the Worthington - Perry line. On the Perry line I was able to find some lines 10 - 11 generations back and have alot on the Provancha and Norander line. A great-aunt of the Dankers gave us alittle to get started on that line. Hope to hear from you soon. SylviaHowe@hotmail.com Thanks Sylvia

Robrt Halpaus is my great great grandfather. He was married to my great great grandmother, Alvina Foreman. (I don't know the year.) They had three children:John,Ida,and Hazel. Ida is my great grandmother. Her daughter , Sally, who is my grandmother, told me that they lived in Montana for a short time while Robert worked for the sherriffs dept. They moved back to Warroad,MN where Robert served as constable in a lumberjack camp. She also said that during this time in the camp Alvina made money by taking in boarders and laundry. The small house or cabin they lived in was attacked by wild animals a few times and Alvina begged Robert to fins them a safer place and he refused. I hear he was quite the rambler. Anyhow, Alvina saved her money and then moved to Lake City with her children. Robert never sent money for food or clothes for the children and at 15 years of age Ida came home to find that her mother had rented out her room because they had become so destitute. When the county where Robert lived sent a letter to family asking for money or anyone who might take him in Ida refused because she still resented him for being such an inadequate father.
