PACHOLL FAMILY

Andreas (Andrew) Pacholl, Sr., was born in Elditten, East Prussia, Germany, in 1861. He came ot the United Statein 1880 settling in Brooklyn, New York, where he worked as a blacksmith for $1 a day. He saved money so that his brother, Albert, could join him. The two brothers then worked so that eventually, the three sisters joined them in New York. The parents, Johann and Barbara Pacholl, also came at some point.

Andrew met and married Katherina Reiter (alt. spelling: Reuter) in Brooklyn. She was born in Dusseldorf, Germany, and came to brooklyn when she was about 17. They moved to Rock Valley, IA, around 1890. By 1893 thye moved to St. Kilian, MN, where Andrew operated a blacksmith shop for two years before moving on a farm between St. Kilian and Wilmont, which he farmed in addition to blacksmith work. Around 1916, Andrew and Katherine moved to North Mankato and then Minneapolis. They had eight sons and three daughters: John, Elizabeth, Joe, William, Henry, Andrew, Ann, Teresa, Frank, Ben and Ferdinand.

John, the eldest child, was born in Brooklyn in 1892. He grew up on the family farm and then was called to service during WW I, and served overseas. On his way home it is believed that he stopped in the New York area to visit frinds of his parents. There he met and later married Julie Thomas. Two children were born to this union: Tommy, who died as a youngster after an attack of appendicitis [died April 6, 1928]; and Francis (Bud). John and Julie lived on the Pacholl farm until they purchased teh Phillips 66 gas station in Wilmont which they operated many years. Bud, their son, married Ida Probst of Wilmont.

Elizabeth: no info given.

He served overseas and was the victim of gas attacks and shell shock which affected him all his adult life. He worked at a series of odd jobs in various locales in southern Minnesota. He remained single.

William lived in St. Cloud, MN.

Henry was born in St. Kilian and worked in the area until his induction into the Army during WW I. He served overseas in France. He was seriously wounded during the Battle of Verdun on October 23, 1918, and died on October 25th, just three weeks before the Armistice which ended the war. He is buried in a military cemetery in France.

Andrew married Millie Voss and had six children. They farmed the Pacholl home place in section 27 of Wilmont Township until giving up due to ill health and moving to Wilmont where he operated a restaurant. He also sold Rawleigh. Millie was a cook for OLGC [Our Lady of Good Counsel] parochial school.

Ann married Clyde Ryther and had eight children. They lived in Michigan.

Teresa lived only 10 months, dying of Pneumonia in 1901. She is buried in St. Kilian, MN.
