I found some information on Levi P. Clark at the Minnesota Historical Society. He was admitted to Fergus Falls State Hospital on January 30, 1899. A. Hamphill was listed as Correspondent or Relative. His residence was Butler, Otter Tail County, MN, P.O. Paddock in Otter Tail County. He was 68 years old, weighed 129 pounds, was 5' 3 1/2 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, gray hair. He was widowed. Nativity of Father is listed as New York. His occupation was mechanic. Common School education. Religion was Episcopal. Fair physical condition. He was accompanied by J.E. Holmes. He was buried in the Hospital Cemetery 1, Section 23, Grave 8 on August 12, 1901.

There might be more information available. Email me directly at frojen@umn.edu if you would like me to check.

Sandy
All the info you've found is amazing. I'm still digesting and comparing the facts, but there's not much doubt these are the right people. Putting all the records together as you have makes everything a lot clearer. I'll keep you posted on my progress. You've been a tremendous help, and I'll be sure to reference you when I list all the sources.

Alice Clark was my great-grand-aunt, mother of several children, and married once-and-forever, but little has been known of her. It's good to find out more.

Thanks so much, David

Her name is Alice L Clark, b 28 Dec 1881 MN, d 1942 San Juan NM. Brother: Harry Arthur Clark, b 19 Dec 1889 Paddock, Otter Tail MN, d 1959 San Juan NM. Mother: Mary A (Currin) Clark Burns, b 1861 MN, burial 1951 San Juan NM. They are on the 1900 Maricopa AZ census, all listed as Burns. The other children listed have a different father (Burns). All I have for the father Clark is birthplace- Canada English.

I appreciate your input and will look at Minneapolis and Hennepin County.

The census for 1880 Glenwood, Pope, MN shows:
Parsons Clark 50 WI
Elizabeth Clark 39 OH
Mary A. Clark 18 MN
Alvina Clark 13 MN
Lee Clark 12 MN
Amelia Clark 5 MN

The 1870 census you provided shows the same Mary A Clark, with the same birth info. I'm thinking she is the same person as Mary Alice Kearns on the 1882 marriage record with Parsons Clark- and that he could have married his stepdaughter.

From what I've found so far, the wife Elizabeth shown here in 1880, may have been Elizabeth Thompson and first married to a Kernes. Your 1864 marriage record shows Elizabeth Kernes married Levi P Clark in Winona MN. A well researched tree I looked at shows her name as Thompson and the mother of Mary A Clark.

Elizabeth seems to have died in the early 1880's.

If I'm right in my research, the first child born to Parsons Clark and Mary Alice Kearns was in Dec 1881.

Harry Levi Parsons Clark Born 1857. This is posted in the family-line of a Ms. D Bell. I've looked at her list before, but the name Kernes is recently new to me so it didn't register. I attempted to contact her a couple times, but no luck.

You may be right about him being a son of LP Clark- so far his records show 3 wives and about 10 kids, but no Jr. I pulled up all the Clarks in Pope County 1880-1885, and didn't see any possibilities. I'll keep looking and check for any time gaps.

Ordering a copy of his 1882 marriage record with Mary Alice might solve this puzzle.

Or did I jump to the wrong conclusion? I saw this when I googled "Levi Parsons Clark"

Harry Levi Parsons Clark Born: 1857 in Died: 1890 in 024 Mary Alice Kernes Born: 1861 in Died: 1950

I can't get to the website where that is found. Maybe my internet connection is not good tonight. But that name would explain the son named Harry, and the fact that after 1890, Mary is gone from Minnesota with her kids.

Maybe Harry Levi Parsons Clark is Levi P. Clark's son from one of his earlier marriages, and Mary Alice Kernes is the step sister. Maybe the step kids married? not Stepfather/Stepdaughter?

Interesting. Elizabeth Clark's death should also probably be in the death records for Pope County, at the courthouse, but the Pope county historical society may have an index for that.
Usually census records were taken in June. So Elizabeth was probably still alive in June 1880. By March 1881, Mary was pregnant, and gave birth to Alice in Dec. 1881. Married one month later to Levi Parsons Clark. Interesting chain of events.
And can I say, yuck? Gut feeling.

The 1880 census matches the age for Levi Parsons Clark born 1830, given on that genealogy site. Other censuses showed 1840's. I think 1830 is probably correct.
I wonder if he is buried in Otter Tail County, if there was a burial ground for those that died at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls.

Thanks for trying to help and for taking the time to post the information. I did have all this information already (plus lots more)but it might help someone else researching the Spallin/Morehouse family. I've also posted these photo's to local genealogy societies and family members in John & Hannah's hometowns in Alberta, the Gatineau region in Quebec and County Antrim in Ireland. Hopefully, someone, someday will recognise one of the people in the photographs. Fingers crossed! Debby

There are two county historical societies that are excellent and may have some information in their archives for you.

POPE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
809 S. Lakeshore Drive
Glenwood, MN 56334
320-634-3293
Administrator: Merlin Peterson
www.popecountymuseum.wordpress.com
pcmuseum@wisper-wireless.com

Alice's birth would be recorded at the Pope County Courthourse, right there in Glenwood. Perhaps the Pope County historical society has a birth index to the county births, which tell where he birth is recorded - which old record book. I've been to the courthouse there in Glenwood and looked at the births book, so it is possible to go there and do it, and I wonder if you could also pay for a birth record, to get a copy.

also, The Otter Tail County historical society is a good one.
that may have more information about the Clark family and the time they spent there, including the death or obituary of Levi Parsons Clark.

OTTER TAIL COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
1110 West Lincoln
Fergus Falls, MN 56537
218-736-6038
Fax: 218-739-3075
otchs.prtel.com
Director: Chris Schuelke
www.otchs.org

You can also post on the Otter Tail County query page here at ancestry.com, if you haven't yet.

I googled "Levi P. Clark" Minnesota (just like that with the quotation marks) and see that some related information is on ancestry.com. I don't subscribe to it, but am able to see some things.

Born in New York, USA on 1830. Levi Parsons married Alvina Kitchel and had 4 children. Levi Parsons married Elizabeth and had 4 children. He passed away on 10 Aug 1901 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail, Minnesota, USA.

the census records show that he was born in 1842 or so, but maybe 1830 is correct? Fergus Falls Mental Hospital was also used if someone had Alzheimers or Dementia, or even alcoholism.

son Lee Clark:
Born in Minnesota, USA on 1870 to Levi Parsons Clark and Elizabeth.

Here is the genealogy website of someone who has Levi Parsons Clark in their genealogy - Levi's page:
http://www.eagletz.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I258...

It seems they've totally missed his marriage in Pope County to Mary - although I see from this page that he was living in Pope county in 1880, right before he married Mary. His wife died within a year or so of the 1880 census.
There might be mention of the death and marriage at the Pope County HIstorical Society in Glenwood. They have family files on a lot of family names from the county that were mentioned in the county newspapers.

this looks like a good match for Alice Clark, with mother Mary, born in Minnesota, AND located where her brother was located, living in Otter Tail County, Minnesota.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQXK-TG4

name: Alice Clark
residence: Paddock, Otter Tail, Minnesota
age: 3 years
estimated birth year: 1882
birthplace: Minnesota
race: White
gender: Female
family number: 8
volume: Otter Tail
page number: 1
film number: 000565749
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Peersons Clark M 43y New York
Mary Clark F 28y Minnesota
Lee Clark M 15y Minnesota
Alice Clark F 3y Minnesota
Florence Clark F 1y Minnesota
Mary Beyan F 39y New York

The 1890 Federal census burned, so the next one in MInnesota is 1895.

I think Glenwood in Pope County is correct, because I find the parent's marriage happened there!
The Minnesota Marriage records index is online,
POPE County
B152
Date of marriage: 1/28/1882
Groom: CLARK, PERSONS
Bride: KEARNS, MARY ALICE

Kearns vs. Currin?

Persons Clark had obviously been married before, as you see his son Lee Clark is age 15 on the 1885 census - too old to be a son of Mary.

On the 1895 census in Otter Tail, I find a maybe match for the older half brother Lee Clark
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQ6F-4NS

name: Lee Clark
titles & terms (original):
residence: Butler, Otter Tail, Minnesota
age: 26y
estimated birth year: 1869
place of birth: Minnesota
race (original): W
gender: Male
line number: 22
family number: 20
page number: 3
gsu film number: 000565793
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Peter Mcguire M 50y New York
Mrs. Ellen Mcguire F 48y New York
Cashus Mcguire M 21y Michigan
Lee Clark M 26y Minnesota
Levi P Clark M 53y New York

Notice that Levi P. Clark, age 53, born in New York, is living there too. Makes me wonder if there was a divorce. I think that Levi P. Clark is Levi Persons Clark. The 1885 census says he is born in New York about 1842, and this Levi P. Clark is also born in New York about 1842.

Back in 1870, about the time that Lee Clark was born, was a census with the father Levi, from New York.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MDHH-TGR

name: Levi Clark
estimated birth year: 1833
gender: Male
age in 1870: 37y
color (white, black, mulatto, chinese, indian): White
birthplace: New York
home in 1870: Minnesota, United States
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Levi Clark M 37y New York
Elizabeth Clark F 28y Ohio
Ida A Clark F 13y Wisconsin
Mary A Clark F 8y Minnesota
Frank Clark M 4y Minnesota
Alvina Clark F 3y Minnesota
Lee Clark M 5m Minnesota

I think the oldest child Ida A. Clark might have been NOT from the wife Elizabeth, either. She is too old. The mother would have been 15 when she was born. Too young for the times.

Here is a good match for Levi P. Clark - possible father to Alice, in 1900 census, born in New York, but a patient at the Fergus Falls Hospital (Insane Asylum, in earlier lingo) which is located in Otter Tail County.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M934-ZVW

name: Levi P Clark
titles & terms:
event: Census
event date: 1900
event place: ED 171 Fergus Falls State Hospital for the Insane, Otter Tail, Minnesota, United States
birth date:
birthplace: New York
relationship to head of household: Patient
father's birthplace:
mother's birthplace:
race or color (standardized): White
gender: Male
marital status: Widowed
years married:
estimated marriage year:
mother how many children:
number living children:
immigration year:
page: 11
sheet letter: A
family number:
reference number: 43
film number: 1240780
digital folder number: 004120296
image number: 00055

Hennepin county has a Glenwood Lake and a Glenwood park. It also had a Glenwood Spring, which later became the source of a bottled water company. It's on the west side of the city of Minneapolis.
If you would like to post the name of the person you are looking for, there are other databases available where we could look for her, which might give a more precise location.
Glenwood in Pope County has not been referred to as Glenwood Springs, but the one in Minneapolis has. Here's a little history:

GLENWOOD INGLEWOOD FAMOUS SPRING WATER MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA SINCE 1884

Bottled artesian water; Bottled drinking water; Bottled water; Distilled drinking water; Drinking water

Glenwood "Famous Spring Water" has not been spring water since the late 1980s when Glenwood Spring and the Great Medicine Spring in Theodore Wirth Park were permanently dewatered into the sewer system by MnDOT for Interstate-394. Glenwood water comes in gallon plastic jugs.

Thanks. I have to assume the place I'm looking for is in MN, since the obit and her other records list MN. Glenwood, Pope County is also close to where her brother was born in Otter Tail, so it's the main suspect for now.

Hi I am doing research on the Berry family of Glenwood, Pope County. I believe that H. Berry was Herman Berry he was a Furniture maker and I recently found out that he was listed as Undertaker as well. That is probably why he is listed as the informant on Ingeborg Strand's records. Not sure if this helps but I thought you might want to know.

Keith Lawrence

My great grandfather was John G. Spallin and he came to Leven Township, Pope county with his new bride, Hannah Morehouse, several days after their marriage on May 22, 1878 in Wakefield, Quebec. They lived in Leven until 1900 when they and their 12 children moved to Alberta, Canada to Homestead. I have always wondered why they left Quebec. John was an Irish immigrant from Burnquarter, County Antrim. Burnquarter is right beside Garryduff and both are just south of Ballymoney, County Antrim. Are there other families from Pope County with origins in that part of Ireland? If so, I would love to exchange information with their descendants. I would also love to exchange information with any families who knew the SPALLIN's.

I am in the family of John Klevenberg who imgrated in 1879.My great grandmother was Kari Klevenberg who had several children and one was my grandmother Carrie Larson. Grandma Carrie came to America around 1884 to 1887. We have looked for her in Minnesota before she married John Quincey Adams in 1904. Unable to locate her until she married. My email is rdsp@turbonet. Karen

Hello. Thank you so much for your effort. I have found much of the information you sent, but not the Dobias information. All of that looks very promising. I hope to get back into the genealogy this week and really research what you have given me. The Dobias side is not directly related, but I wanted to find out what happened to him that would make Ann Rosing re-mary.

Again, thank you SO much.

I am looking for any connection to Geraldine Schmidt and Jeffery Schmidt. I believe they might be mother and son, but I don't know. Chester A. Schmidt died in Glenwood, Pope County, March 31, 1997. In his obit, it lists Geraldine and Jeffery. Chester is the son of my grandfathers brother and I am trying to find a connection to this side of my family. Chester married Florence Dokkebakken in 1933. They retired to Glenwood. Florence had many relatives in the area. I have not found any other Schmidt's in the area and I am wondering if Geraldine and Jeffery are related. They were listed as casketbearers. They may be related to his two brothers but I am no sure.

One of my families from Hafslo area are the John Mons Johnson and Anna Ottosdatter Espen family. The other family was the Sjur and Anna Lunde Christenson family. You mentioned a Peter Larsson Ugulen. Peter was born in 1865 to Lars Olsen Kjos and Anna Johannesdtr. Lilleskov in Norway. Peter sailed on the "Augusta" from Bergen in 1853. His brother Ole his wife and son came in 1866 and his parents and three sisters followed on the Bark "Alma" in 1869. His father homesteaded land in section 26 of Nelson township in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Peter's brother Ole homesteaded the land that my father purchased in Modena township, Buffalo County, WI. I have lost track of the Ugulen family and was glad to hear where Peter ended up. I know he was in the civil war. I have more information on the family if anyone is interested.

Sorry, for some reason I was never alerted when you replied to my inquiry.

I have spoken to and met Noel Larson. Do you know him? He's given me some information. I've heard him menton the name Kjos. His father as Philip Larson, his grandfather was John Larsson, and his great grandparents were Peder Larsson Ugulen and Christi Jansdotter Veum. He lives in Merrifield, MN. Let me know if you'd like more information.

What was the name of your mother's family that came from Hafslo and settled in Buffalo Co.?
