I just happen to have stumbled across the tombstone of, who I believe was, David Davis, son of Sylvester Davis and his wife, Betsy Strickland. I am pretty sure that this is him, but I want you to decide for yourself whether I am correct or not. I took a photo of this tombstone. On the tombstone is the name David Davis born May 12, 1832 and died Feb 24, 1900. Also, his wife, Jennette Davis, died Dec 17, 1928, age 91 yrs. I found David and Jeanette Davis living in Warsaw, Rice Co., Minnesota, in the 1880 census. I also have an informative obituary of Mrs. Jeanette Davis, which states that her maiden name was Vanosdel and that they were wed in 1866. Jeanette Davis died in Sheridan twp., Redwood Co., MN

I double checked and studied other Davis families living in Rice County, Minnesota in the 1880 census, as well as searching and studying names that I found on the Internet, and now I have concluded that Sylvester Davis and his wife, Betsy Stickland, had at least a half dozen children: Hiram E., b. 1829 NY; David Davis, b. 1833 NY, Napoleon Davis, b. 1836 IL; Susan Davis, b. 1838, IL; William Davis, b. 1842 IL and Cordelia Davis, b. 1846 IL.

There was an Edward A. Davis b. 1836 in MI who resided in Bridgewater twp., Rice Co., MN in 1880 with his wife Martha and their six children. I highly suspect that Edward A. Davis was also a son of Sylvester Davis and Betsy Strickland, but I can’t prove it; so for the time being, this is merely speculation.

Posted on the Internet at RootsWeb’s World Connect Project is the family of Napolean Davis who married Elizabeth Van Osdol who were married in1859 in Minnesota. Their first daughter, Alice was born in Rice Co., Minnesota. This posting states that Napolean Davis died in Spokane County, Washington. It also states the names of his eight children.

David Davis married Jeanette Vanosdel, as reported in Jeanette’s obituary. I highly suspect that Jeanette and Elizabeth Van Osdol were sisters.

Also at RootWeb’s World Connect Project there is a posting on the family of Simon Vanosel and his wife, Elizabeth Stevenson. Listed there are the names of their nine children. Josephine Vanosdel, who married Myron James Perkins, was their daughter and she was the sister of Elizabeth and Jeanette, mentioned above. Josephine (Vanosdel) Perkins died at Mankato, MN

From the tombstone of William Davis, which is in the Redwood Falls cemetery, Redwood Falls, Minnesota, it states that William H. Davis was born in DuPage County, Illinois December 3, 1843 and died in Renville Co., MN November 24, 1902. It is also inscribed on the tombstone that he married Mahala Johnson January 2, 1867, first marriage in Honnor Township, which means Honnor twp., Redwood County, Minnesota.

On page 888 of History of Redwood County, is a biography of George S. Davis, son of William and Mahala (Johnson) Davis. In this biography is a sentence that reads: “William Davis, a native of Illinois, came to Rice County, Minnesota with his parents in 1852.” George S. Davis was born in Rice County.

If you go back five paragraphs, you will notice that Napoleon, Susan, William and Cordelia were all born in Illinois; so I conclude that they were all born in DuPage County, Illinois, which is an assumption.

Also posted at RootsWeb’s World Connect Project is the family of David Davis and his wife, Jeanette Van Asdell. This is the same family as already mentioned but notice the different spelling of Jeanette’s maiden name. This posting states that their daughter Elizabeth Davis was born April 28, 1862 in Elision, MN. Elision is a typo and should have been written Elysian. Elysian is a village and a township in Le Sueur County, Minnesota.

I have not exhausted the information that I have found on the Internet and elsewhere on this Davis Family, but this write-up will have to suffice. If you have questions or concerns about this information please contact me.
