Looking for parents of Joseph Beutz born 1851 in Austria/arrived here about 1883 and his spouse Ursula Rosemann born 1860 in Austria/arrived here in 1884. They resided in Stearns County and had 17 children. I need either Joseph or Ursula's parents names to research the tree back to Austria. The surnames have been spelled incorrectly in many of the records. Appreciate any help.
Jeanne

I am also greatly interested to come in contact with people that have memories and stories of this family.

PS: I got all family background from Sweden and I have found them in the US Census of 1900 to 1930.

Stearns County Veterans with Luxembourg Ancestry - WWI & WWII

Rene Daubenfeld, the leader of several tours to the St. Cloud area for the past three years, has announced on his website a new project. Because so many Luxembourgers settled in the SE quadrant of Stearns COunty, I am posting this for your information.

The Luxembourgers are interested in stories about US Veterans of Luxembourg ancestry. In WWI and especially in WWII the American military is credited with liberating the small country of Luxembourg. For this reason the people of Luxembourg continue to have a strong respect for the USA and our strong sense of freedom. They are very grateful. They are requesting stories of veterans be sent to them. You can read more about this at Rene's website at http://www.haffren.lu/

The most famous American soldier of Luxembourg descent was actually from Sartell, Minnesota! His name was Phillip Weis, and he fought with George Patton's army in the Ardennes Mountains of northern Luxembourg in the winter of 1944-45 - the Battle of the Bulge. He became famous because he died in January 1945 in the battle to liberate the city of Wiltz. It was one of the last battles of the Battle of the Bulge. Phillip's body was not found until November 1945, as it was in the mountainous area, and for 7-8 months he was listed as MIA and presumed KIA. In November 1945 a local man came across the body of a US soldier, and found Phillip's dogtags. His parents were notified and he was buried in the US military cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg, the same cemetery where Gen. George Patton is buried. For some reason, Phillip's dogtag was lost at the time his body was removed from the place of death.

In September 1977 a local Luxembourger, by the name of Ferdinand Weis, was walking through the forest and looking for artfacts of the big battleground when he came across a small bag using his metal detector. Inside were 2 dogtags, one with "Phillip Weis" on it and the other with "ASS 37555522" on it. Because of the same family name, Ferdinand contacted the US military cemetery in Hamm where Phillip was buried. He discovered the soldier was from Sartell, Minnesota and contacted the last of his family here. Through correspondence, it was discovered that Phillip's grandfather, Nicholas Weis, was born at Insenborn, a few miles south of Wiltz. Phillip died within 3 miles of his grandfather's birthplace! Eventually Phillip's Sartell relatives journeyed to Luxembourg and received a hearty welcome and honors from the locals.

Last year while visiting the Military Cemetery, the guide told the story of Phillip Weis to the group, as an example of a soldier of Luxembourg ancestry helping in the liberation of the land of his ancestors. Every year on 6 January, a red rose appears on his grave. No one knows who the person is who decorates Phillip's grave, but it is certain that it is done in gratitude for the supreme sacrifice that Phillip gave.

So, do you also have a story of a family veteran of WWII who is of Luxembourg heritage?

"Henry Edelbrock was born in Dernekamp, Westphalia, Germany, April 23, 1823. As a young man he married Gertrude Grosse Kleimann. He became a prosperous and successful farmer, reached middle age, and reared a fine family, all in his native country. But his brother, Joseph, had come to America, located in St. Cloud, and established the first general store in the village. After considering the matter for a long time, Henry Edelbrock decided to come to America. He accordingly sold out his possessions, and with his family started for America, reaching St. Cloud in 1880. Here he spent the remainder of his life in retirement.

"Mr. and Mrs. Henry Edelbrock had ten children: Anton, Gertrude, Anna, Henry, August T., Theodore, Joseph F., Elizabeth, Mary, and Theresa. Anton and Gertrude are dead. Anna married John Heinann, contractor, of St. Cloud, and they have seven children. Henry married Mary Moritz, lives in Melrose, and has four children. August T. married Annie M. Schwartz, has seven children and lives in St. Paul. Theodore lives with his brother, Joseph F., August T., and Theodore were in the clothing business together in St. Cloud for some twenty years. They are now retired. Joseph F. is appropriately mentioned elsewhere in this volume. Elizabeth married John Schwartz, and they have four children."

Transcribed by Phil Holm from:
Title: History of Stearns County
Publisher: Chicago: H.C. In 1866, he came to Sauk Centre, and after a brief period in the harness business, engaged in brokerage, etc., until September, 1880, when he formed a partnership with Solomon Pendergast, and commenced a general banking business, their bank being known as the "Bank of Sauk Centre."
Hello everyone:

I am currently researching two items in our tree. First of all, there was a story about how my gg grandma burned down the saloon that my gg grandfather worked. Their last names were Homberg and this was before they took off for Montana. So maybe in the late 1880's to 1900's. Also I know from a photo one of thier children was a small person, or had some type of chromosome issue. Does anyone know the truth to these two events? Thanks to everyone who works so hard in connecting and keep our histories alive for our future generations to enjoy....Bridgette
dburgerfamily@bresnan.net

John Schaefer from Stearns County, b.1836 in Germany/Poland

I have a John Schaefer from Stearns County, born in 1936 in Germany/Poland (he was Polish & Catholic). The 1900 Census shows him living in Stearns Cty. with his daughter and son-in-law, Michael Kedrowski & Dorothy Schaefer. John's wife obviously died prior to the 1900 census. I am looking for her name, and the names of any other children she had with John...i.e., Dorothy Schaefer's brothers and sisters. Also, when John's wife died, and where she is buried. There is a question of immigration date, as the census records show several different dates ranging from 1882-1888. When and if I find that, I'll hopefully at least know if John's wife emmigrated with him. I've not yet found naturalization records tho. John moved from Stearns Cty. to the St. Paul (Ramsey Cty) area with his daughter's family (the Kedrowski's) sometime between the 1900 census for Stearns Cty, and the 1910 census for St. Paul. John Died in 1917 in St. Paul, Ramsey Cty. If anyone can offer any clues to the whereabouts of John's family, I'd most appreciate it. Also, if anyone has access to St. Cloud newspapers, I wonder if his daughter might have put an obituary in the St. Cloud paper. John's date of death was March 31, 1917. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

I am looking for information or desendants of the Zingsheim family of Castenholtz or Flamersheim, Rhineland, Germany. My only lead is a marriage record and two birth records. Jacobus Zingsheim married Margaretha Kaus in January of 1755. Joes Henrich was born in 1756 and Magdalena was born in 1757. Are these records familiar to anyone? Thanks for your consideration.

Ann

Hans Halvorsen (Halvorson) 1838-1924 - Belgrade

I am seeking information about, and relatives of, Hans Halvorsen. He arrived in Belgrade, Minnesota, in 1865, right after the end of the American Civil War. He came with his brothers Kittel and Halvor and with Hans Kittelson Skogen, Severt Larson, and Hans Skaartdahl to file for land grants. They were among the first pioneer settlers in that area and were known as "the soldier boys" because they were all Civil War veterans.

Hans died January 7, 1924, at the home of his daughter Mrs. M.O. Schonsted, Town of Brooten, Stearns County, and is buried in the Big Grove Cemetery in the Town of Belgrade. I am seeking to learn about the nearly 60 years of his life that took place between his 1865 arrival in Belgrade and his burial there in 1924, including:

* When he married his wife, Ronnaug (Randi) Larsdatter Sundvollen, at Big Grove Lutheran Church in Belgrade.
* The names and birth dates of his children.
* His social, religious, civic, political, occupational, and fraternal affiliations.
* The cause of his death in 1924.

I would particularly like to learn the names of his parents and get copies of anything that he wrote about his experiences in the Civil War, including his time in the notorious Andersonville Prison Camp. I'd also like to get a copy of his obit, and any bio contained in any history publications about Stearns County.

There is an online profile of Hans Halvorsen that can be accessed via the link below. The profile contains basic genealogical data about him, a detailed record of his military service, and a photograph of him with his grandchildren. The profile is posted on the 15th Wisconsin website, which is listed in the book "The Civil War on the Web: A Guide to the Very Best Sites."

Credit for information provided will be given by name in the Sources section of his profile for anything used in the profile. I thank you in advance for any help that you may be able to provide.

Update on Gottlieb KOCH and Frank GILK / GILG

By the way, my e-mail address is neumann@sasktel.net.
In past e-mails in 1999, 2005, 2006, I made requests for help in locating my g-grandfather Gottlieb KOCH both in the 1860 census as well as in Wuerttemberg where he was born (in ca 1831 somewhere). Today I update you with the word that I believe I have found Gottlieb in 1860 in the upper Michigan peninsula, Ontonagon County, near Rockland, P.O. Minnesota Mine, p. 3 of the census, listed as a "mining laborer" probably working in the copper mines there. Best of all he is listed with 2 other Kochs who are likely his brothers or cousins, especially Frank Cook, age 28, is listed right after Gottlieb, and Leopold Cook is listed on p. 2, line 30, age 27 (b ca 1833) with wife Annie, 27, daughter Annie, 1. Leopold owns the home where they lived together with several other miners. Any help with info on Gottlieb, Frank and Leopold would be appreciated, especially with where they are born in Wuerttemberg, and where Frank and Leopold are after 1870 (I don't see them). In 1870 Frank is also married and has 3 children in Rockland. Gottlieb moves to Stearns County in 1866 to homestead and died in 1898.
Frank Gilg (Gilk in Stearns County), b ca 1843 in E. Boehmen, is on p. 23 of the same township, Rockland, also a mining laborer in 1860 (the rest of his family is back in Milford Twp., Jefferson Co., WI). By 1862 he enlists with the Wisconsin infantry in the Civil War and later is in Stearns Co. Gilk family members may be interested in this news on Frank. I believe it is the right Frank. He is not in Jefferson County or anywhere else that I see. Any confirmation of this would be appreciated too, or any comments.

Update on Gottlieb Koch, Frank Koch, Leopold Koch

My search for Gottlieb Koch in Wuerttemberg continues without much success. I now am fairly certain that the Frank Koch and Leopold Koch I mentioned being copper miners with my Gottlieb Koch in upper Michigan (1860 census) are probably not related. Frank (born Franz Sales) Koch b 8 Jan 1827, and Leopold Koch b 28 Nov 1831, both born in Munderdingen, Ehingen Oberamt, Donaukreis, Wuerttemberg, did not have a Gottlieb Koch b ca 1831, as a brother, and he is not found in the Munderdingen parish records. Frank and Leopold's parents were not the same as Gottlieb's. Their parents were Otto Koch and Crescentia Traub, while Gottlieb's parents were said to be Michael and Sophie Koch.
The one possible relative I have left to check is a Louis Cook (born Ludwig Koch?) b July 1825, Wuerttemberg, died 24 Sept 1901, Boston, MA, whose parents are said to be Michael and Josephine Koch. Nicknames for Josephine can be Sophie or Sophia. So if I can only find out where Louis or Ludwig was born, then I might find Gottlieb at last. I have tried posting a query in Massachusetts, but so far have had no success. If I can only get an obituary for him somehow...
Anyway, this is my latest news on the elusive origins of my g-grandfather. Thanks for reading and for any suggestions beyond what I've done. Especially if relatives of Gottlieb read this and if you have the slightest clue, please write.

I will repeat my 5 year old plea for assistance on the KOCH family. Gottlieb Koch was born about 1831-33 somewhere in the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg, Germany. Where is the big question. His parents, according to wedding information, were Michael and Sophia, but that's all I know. He settled in the Melrose area by 1866, but emigrated in 1853 landing in N.Y. Where he was during the period of 1853-1866 is unknown. I suspect it was Ohio (near some of the BARTHLE family who later settled near him in Stearns County). One child of Gottlieb Koch and wife Regina SCHWIEP / SWEEP was named George M. KOCH, and so I suspect Michael's full name was Georg Michael KOCH. Families of Bernard Koch, Gottlieb's son, with a large family should also be interested in this search. Any help would be appreciated. Are there any relatives or friends who might help, especially ones near or in Stearns County?

I believe her father (Pickell)was born in Pensylvannia and her mother (Landon) was born in Canada. Any information about Georgia's birth or her parent's marriage/occupations would be so very much appreciated. I believe Georgia married Charles W. Linscott around 1900 or so. The only other thing I know of Georgia is that she was lame with one leg much shorter than the other - not sure if that was from birth or a later accident. Again, ANY information would be appreciated!

I am searching for information about the family of Bazel (also spelled Bazzle, Basel, Basil etc) and Ellen (Eleanor or Nelly) Gordon. Bazel and Nelly were born in the early 1820s in Pennsylvania. They migrated through Ohio and Illinois before settling in Manannah Twp, Meeker Co, IL where they were located in the 1870 and 1880 census. Bazel was a farmer.

I have not been able to locate most of the family after 1880. I have located a few of them in Paynesville, Stearns Co, so I wonder if there is additional information to be found, particularly death dates, burial sites and/or marriage records for the children.

Bazel's widowed wife, Nellie, age 77, b: PA was listed as living Paynesville, Stearns Co, in 1900. She probably died soon after the census.

1) Son Warren (middle name probably Bazzle)Gordon apparently lived in Paynesville after the 1900 census.

2) Son John William Gordon, b: Nov 1864 in IL, married Eva FISHER and they were were the parents of 6 children, all born in Paynesville -
Morris Page Gordon, 1894
Stearns K Gordon, Sep 1898
Beryl Dahlia Gordon, 1901
Roosevelt Gordon, abt 1905
Patricia Ann Gordon, b: mar 1907
Infant Gordon

3) Henrietta Gordon, b: abt 1871 in MN

4) Sylvina Gordon, who died before 1900 in MN

5) George W Gordon, b: abt 1849 in PA - may have died in MN

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

My great great grandparents were Mathias Lehnen and Maria Brommenschenkel from Luxembourg. Where I do not know? I know they came over around 1861 or 1867. I tried to find papers of immigration or naturalization but I can't find anything. I've found them in Iowa censuses 1870 & 1880. I then found them in Cavalier County North Dakota in 1900 & 1910. I know my great grandfather who was Mathias Lehnen too got married in Stearns County to my Great grandmother, Magdalena Mary Sieren. I really would like help in find exactly where in Luxembourg did they come from? Thanks a bunch, Lisa

POW/MIA Korean War, Stearns Co. WISWELL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Stearns County, MInnesota as his home of record.

Soldier: ALBERT VINCENT WISWELL
Born: 1929
Date of loss: September 3, 1950

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 26 families in Minnesota that have not been located. There is one family from Stearns County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Ferdinand Bahner/Elisabeth Dueber - St. Cloud - 1860's

Ferdinand Bahner married Elisabeth Dueber in Missouri in 1858. They had three daughters born to them in the 1860's in St. Cloud. The girls were baptized at St. Mary's Church in St. Cloud, Minnesota. In the 1860 census the Bahner family is living next door to August Dueber and his wife, Emilie and their family. A Bahner daughter born in 1861 had Carl Dueber listed as the godfather. Carl was August & Emily Dueber's son, and he is my g-grandfather.

I can find little else about Elisabeth Bahner, as Ferdinand Bahner is apparently remarried by the time of the 1870 census. He no longer lives next door to the Dueber family, but appears in the census 2 pages later in the city of St. Cloud. His new wife is listed as Laura and she is 10 years younger than Ferdinand. I have found an Elisabeth Dueber in the Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud. She died in 1869. She is buried next to Emily Dueber and Alvina Dueber, a daughter of August & Emily. By this information I am presuming Elisabeth Bahner to be the eldest daughter of August & Emily Dueber.

I have searched Ancestry.com to find later census records on the Bahner family with little success. Does anyone have further information on what became of the Ferdinand Bahner family?

My father was born John James Hurth or James John Hurth on June 17,1895 in the Sauk Rapids or St.Cloud, Minnesota area. He was placed in an orphanage or home in Sauk Rapids until he was adopted at age 2 1/2. Presumably his mother was not married and her last name was Hurth, or if married to a Hurth, the child was given up. There are no adoption records to be found. He was baptized July 7,1895 in Holy Angel's Catholic Church in St.Cloud, Minnesota using the surname Hurth. Sponsors were John Mischo and Barbara Vick or Vich. Does anyone doing Hurth family history have any information?
Thank-you.
Marie Halstead

Hello,

My great-grandparents, Michael Stephen Mongoven and Elizabeth Traufler, were married (I believe) in Stearns County (St. Cloud? St. Augustine? Her parents lived in that township.) sometime in 1880 (1879? 1881?). Could somebody please search the marriage index available through the historical society and let me know if I am correct. I would love to purchase a copy of the wedding certificate if this is true. Thanks so much.

Sincerely,
Jan Mongoven

I was recently at a family re-union for the Orbeck family in Farming, MN when I discovered that the name Orbeck is actually suppose to be Schulte Orbeck in our family. With my husbands great-great grandfather being a Johann Schulte Orbeck from Germany. I'm curious what happened with the name I noticed a ton of Schulte's in that area and a lot of Orbeck's as well - did some take the name Orbeck and some Schulte? Anything I could learn on this family would be of interest to me. Johann's wife was Maria Ressemann and they had 9 children one named John who married an Elizabeth .

I am looking for any available information on a Mary Goedert, born in Ohio in 1853, living in Stearns County around 1870. She married Peter Zenz/Zens in 1874 in St Joseph, MN. They lived in the area until 1905. Their children were: Elizabeth, Mary Anna (Annie), Rosia (Rose), Nicholas, Lorenz (Lawrence), John, Henry, Elizabeth Regina (Regina), Anton Victor (Victor, Aloysius Nicholas, all born in the Stearns County area between 1875 and 1895. I believe Mary could have possibly been the child of Peter and Elizabeth Goedert from Luxemborg, but am unsure of this. If you have any information on these families, please help!
I'm trying to get tombstone photos of my GGGparents Bartemus Compton and Katherine Stilton/Stiltner Compton. Bart died in 1899 and Katherine died in 1920. They are both buried in Highland Cemetery in Holdingford, MN. Bartemus and Katherine lived in Va before moving to MN and I've been to where most of their children (that stayed in Va) are buried. To get to burial place for one of the children, I had to walk about a mile to top of a MTN because you cannot access this cemetery by road. I also sent for alot of death certificates on this family and should be receiving them soon.

I'd also like to have tombstone photo of Shadrack/Shadrick Compton b. 1841, d. 1914. I'm not sure where he is buried.
Shade was son of Bart and Katherine Compton.

I've done about all I can do in Va and need some help from MN.

One of my Great Uncles (abt. 90) is still living and I've been trying to put a scrapbook together to give family members for Christmas. This is NOT going to be used to sell or for money gain.

Any help would be appreciated.
Sheila Compton Ramsey
My email is vacemetery@yahoo.com

Keppers List; especially Adam's parents

Irene wrote April 22, 2006:

I have the family information on the Keppers. If you e-mail to me, I will invite you to the site.

Irene,
I would be interested in seeing the Keppers site (especially since it might relate to the Bernard Bach family I have been tracking).
I wonder how far back the site goes since I have noticed the parentage for Adam Keppers born 1808, but I haven't seen anyone remark on that or put it in their genealogical listings. Usually the furthest back they go is to say Adam was born on Aug. 27, 1808, at Pronsfeld.
But I haven't seen any databases explain his parentage. According to the Thomas Pick listing of various churches in Rheinland (now unfortunately not available), his father was not a KEPPERS but Nicolas CREMER, and his mother was Maria SPODEN. Somehow he later was known as KEPPERS (was he adopted, or worked on a KEPPERS farm, or possibly his father or mother married a Keppers?). Probably either the Pronsfeld or Lasel church records (from which Gertrude Dingels came) supply the explanation in the details provided. Do you have any further information on this or any comments?
Thanks for any response. I see I received info in 2001 from Janet Becks and others who had a good Keppers list too but probably it too has been further updated.
Ken Neumann
I'm 1,100 miles away from Stearns County so 'court house jumping' is out of the question. My sister-in-law was named Dorothy Krebsbach.Don't know her father's name. Her mother's maiden surname was Jacoby. Anyone out there doing Krebsbach | Jacoby research? Have a lot of information to share once I break through this loggerhead.

I found the family on the 1880 Stearns Ct census but Elise is no longer in the household. This is a Catholic family so wondering what steps I need to take to find out where they may have attended church so I can try to find this child. Thank you.

Anyone that has an Ancestry account willing to do a lookup for me? On the MN Territorial/State census there is a Nick Elias born in 1832 from Prussia and living in Stearns County. I am trying to find out what the town was and the specific census year because this limited information could be a match for my g-g-grandfather and family history doesn't really show much before the late 1890s about anyone being in MN - just Wisconsin and Michigan - but this could still be possible. Oh, and if there is an occupation listed, that would be great, too! Um, one last request, if he is enumerated with anyone else or the household information. I know it is a lot to request, but this could be key in finding other records for his children. Thank you so very much ahead of time!

Wm. RODENWALD emigration

Rodenwald family members and researchers may be interested to learn that I located the ship's passengers list for William and Ulrike Rodenwald. The naturalization papers claimed they landed at Baltimore about March 1880. That cut down the number of possibilities. Even at that, the only thing that finally helped was asking for any “Albert” born about 1876. With the index on Ancestry.com the name of “Bordeward” showed up. When actually looking at the list, I read it as “Bordewald”, a little closer to Rodenwald. It's no wonder it's been hard to find.

The name of the ship was “Braunschweig” arriving at Baltimore on 8 April, 1880, from Bremen. The family information is very limited but, I believe, definitely the family. “Wilh. Bordewald” is age 30 [b ca 1850, right on!]. The rest of the line is ditto marks, indicating from Prussia and going to Baltimore. There is a ditto mark suggesting he was a “laborer” too. Then “Ulrike” is 25 [b ca 1855, also right on!], Albert is 4 [b ca 1876, right on!]. The first few letters of the next child and the next are torn off, but the one letter visible could be an “a”, the last letter of “Anna”, age 2. That too fits with the 1885 census, where Anna is 7. The child is “f.” too which fits with Anna. Then the next child is “m” (male), probably the August of which the family knows, but only an unclear letter is visible by the tear. He is age 6 months. That would fit in with August being born ca 1879 in Pommern. So given all these number of facts that agree with what we know of the family, I would think it’s fairly safe to say it is the right family.

To add to that, immediately following them is a “riette Freitag” [again the tear is where the opening letters should be], no doubt the feminine name of Henriette. She is age 59, about the right age to be Ulrike’s mother (Ulrike is a FREITAG). Del Thomas reports Ulrike's father was William but mother unknown. Perhaps she is listed in the Stearns County cemetery listings.
Anyway, I thought I would pass this on for those interested in this Stearns County family (some Rodenwalds are my uncles, aunts and cousins).
