John Ransom Gayle is listed in the 1880 Census as living with his step-father, John T. Smith, in Calhoun Co., MS. John Ransom's mother is Louisa Adeline McTyre Gayle Smith. She has at least three children with John T. Smith. They are Nannie, Oscar and Ollie and they are all born in MS between 1870 and 1876.
