From hwy 8 east in Derma, turn south on CR 418, go across the bottom of and up Benela Hill. At the top of the hill turn on CR457, go 2/10 of a mile and turn south on
CR 459. The driveway to the cemetery is immediately on your left as you turn on CR459. And is really immediately...watch carefully. The driveway is really narrow, surrounded and with a tree canopy. Don't go on a rainy day. The cemetery has a fence around it and there are unmarked graves on the otherside of the east fenceline.
It is kinda creepy, so you might want to take a friend.
Hope this helps.

Triphena Elizabeth Weeks (1842-1881)

Buried in Crossroads Cemetery in southern Calhoun County is Triphena Elizabeth Weeks (1842-1881) who was the wife of Alonzo Weeks (1837-1906). Alonzo was the oldest son of Solomon Weeks (died 1845) and wife Elizabeth Reel Weeks (died 1855) who had moved their family from northern Winston County to what was then western Chickasaw County. Solomon and Elizabeth are buried in the Moore Cemetery east of Slate Springs. Alonzo eventually moved to Lafayette County and is buried in Kingdom Cemetery at Yocona.

Triphena E. Weeks is buried between Hitt and Gregg graves in a row near the center of Crossroads Cemetery. Between the Hitt graves and Triphena's grave are two graves marked only with native rocks. Between Triphena's grave and the Gregg graves is one grave marked with a native rock.

Does anyone have information on the maiden name of Triphena Elizabeth Weeks? Searching the 1860 census of Calhoun County reveals a Trifina Smith, aged 18, in the family of John W. Smith and wife Martha [house 108/family 107 with post office listed as Hopewell]. Is anyone researching this Smith family?

Hello Betty,

I am still here. Not sure what I told you. 2 of Ruben children married into a branch of my WINTER family. I got interested in this family because they were such a large family and were very interesting to me.

I have nothing to prove any connection to the Indians except some said his wife was full blood or 1/2 Indian. I did collect a lot of info on this family and have it somewhere. I have 2 old pictures of people out of this family, bible records, birth, marriage, death records. Would have to look to find this info. Did come across it a few months ago somewhere.

What child are you out of in this family? I was in contact with a family out of Calif. and one out of Poteau, Okla out of this family. In fact a man from Poteau, Okla came for a visit. He was Indian and was in reale state business there in that town. I had made a visit to meet him also

james

Washington family mystery

We are looking for information on our Alabama/Georgia Washington family ancestry. Please help solve our old family mystery!

Our oldest known paternal ancestor was George Washington, no middle initial, who was first found in 1840 census at Girard [now Phenix city], Russell, Alabama, at the age of 19 - just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia. Former and merged names of Girard include: Browneville, Knights Station, Lively and Phoenix City.

Living next door was John C. Alford Halford b. 1787 NC.

Info on George Washington's headstone in Sarepta, Calhoun, Mississippi, reads: "Sacred to the memory of George Washington, Born in VA 1821, Died 1869," however, we cannot find anything concrete that takes us back to VA. However, examining the 1850 census it says George was born in Alabama. His children, James Hiram and George, in the 1910 census both say their father was born in Alabama. Son John C. stated in the 1880 MS census that his father was born in Georgia, says in the 1900 MS census that Alabama is the birthplace of his father.

George was first married to Jincy Halford according to Mississippi death certificate of #2 son John C Washington. Search on Jincy results in nothing and am inclined to believe Jincy was a nickname.

George and first wife Jincy resulted in 3 children:

Francis Marion abt. 1839 AL d. 22 Apr 1862 Corinth, MS 18th AL Infantry Co. I, m. Louisa Archer daugh. of John Samuel Archer and Rosa E. BERRY of Shelby co;
John C. b. 30 Dec. 1840 AL d. 14 Feb. 1917 MS, 31st MS Inf. Co. D m. Margaret A Lewellen; and
Catharine b. Bet. 1841-1844 d. Bet. 1841-1844.

Family story is that wife Jincy died in childbirth.

Next George took a land purchase trip to Mississippi with father-in-law John C. Halford in 1841 as follows:
George Washington 27 Feb 1841 17 NESE CHOCTAW 12N 16E (Kemper co. MS),
John C Halford 05 Jan 1841 1 E½NE CHOCTAW No 2N 12E 26 (Jasper co MS).

George then m2 Mary Ann McEwen Jan. 1845 in Muskogee co, Georgia. The family was next found in Wetumpka, Coosa, Alabama in 1850 census. Also in the Wetumpka, Coosa, AL census next door to each other were John C. Halford and Catharine (Jincy's parents?) and Kirkham McEwen & Mary Canada(Mary's parents) - both father-in-laws old justices of the peace. Also listed in the Halford hh was Amanda Conaway who married Joseph Hinton Williams 17 Nov 1850.

Children of George Washington and Mary McEwen were:
Mary Ann m. James E. Lewellen no children
James Hirum Kirkham m. Sarah Adilene Hitchcock
Elizabeth (Lizzie) m. James H. Caldwell
Lucy Ann m1. Wm. Gathright Murphy m2. Millisee Moss
George m1. Mattie Gillespie m2. Gulania Boatsman
Joseph Perry m. Josephine O. Murphy

Searching through both father-in-laws I was able to fill in many blanks, but not the ancestry of George Washington.

I next found George made land purchase witnessed by brother-in-law Francis Marion McEwen in Elmore County (Coosa), AL 18 Jan 1856 (BLM Land Record #13576) SWNE NWSE Sec 2 20 17 with dwelling, corn crib and stable 119 acres.

I recently found George Washington listed in Choctaw Living in the Chickasaw District annuity rolls for union/pontotoc cos. MS between 1857-1860. Family story was we purchased land from Indians and were first white settlers in south Pontotoc county near Chickasaw county line, now known as Washington community.

The family arrived in Mississippi sometime before the death of John Halford's wife Catharine Brown in Feb 1859 in Sarepta. I found George's son John C Washington along with new bride Margaret listed in 1860 census at Sarepta, Calhoun, MS in the John C. Halford [Holford] household.

We are not certain when John C Halford b. 1787 NC died or where he is buried. His wife Catharine Brown b. 13 Jan 1795 SC d. 01 Feb 1859 burial Methodist Campground-Ragland cemetery in Sarepta. She was daugh. of James Brown abt. 1770 SC d. 09 Nov 1820 and Elizabeth of Warren county MS, formerly of SC. The will of James Brown lists daugh. Catharine Halford. Siblings of Catharine Brown were: Jeremiah, Jacob, Jane, Nancy, Elizabeth and Benjamin.

Apparently John C Halford was justice of the peace in Simpson county MS bet. 1823-1826. His father was John b. 1765 Pasquotank, Albemarle County, NC d. 1803 Rutherford, Albemarle County, NC. Mother was Nancy Dalton b. Bet. 1766 - 1768 Albemarle County, VA d. 1804 Rutherford County, NC.
Through research I find the Dalton's go back to the John Dandridge family b. 29 Apr 1655 Great Malvern, Wrcstr, England. So the descendants of George Washington and first wife Jincy Halford are blood related to the Dandridge and Washington families! But which Washington family?

Kirkham McEwen is a well documented justice of the peace moving to Alabama from GA in 1836 where they settled on the Tallapoosa River in Tallapoosa Co. ALA, about 14-miles south of Dadeville.

HINTS:
There was another Washington already residing in Pontotoc county Mississippi prior to our families arrival. His name was John Washington b. 1806 SC and was living in the James and William CHRISTIAN household in Washington community, Pontotoc co., MS. John Washington's daughters were: Martha b 1834 AL, Mary b. 1837 AL and Susan b. 1844 AL. What became of this John Washington and was he a relative?

Was Joseph H Williams who married Amanda Conaway in 1850 Coosa co AL a relative?

George's descendants participated in YDNA testing and are haplotype R1b1b2e and go back in time from N. Ireland to Scotland, to England & British Isles to south France and beyond matching to Niall of the Nine Hostages.

Significant multiple YDNA test matches at:
*37 marker level
WILLIAMS, MCTERNAN, MCTIERNAN, FERGUSON(TRUMBLE),FITZHENRY, HEARL
*25 marker level
CHRISTIAN, MCGEE, MCKEE, MCGEHEE, ALEXANDER, MCTERNAN, MACTIERNAN, MCTIERNAN, FERGUSON, DAUGHERTY, Williams, WALKER, DOHERTY, HARRISON, BOICE, MCGREW, HEARL, MCDONALD, LAW

Please help solve our family mystery!

Terrie

My family and relatives (Grammer plus Grizzle/Ray/Countiss) lived around Bruce back in appx. the 1850-1870 time frame. They were farmers.

I would like to know more about the town and area in general. What type of people lived there? How did people spend their weekends? What schools and churches were available? What kind of farming did most people do, etc.

I'm just trying to get a feel for the type of life that they might have lived.

Thank you, Theresa

In fact there are 3 or 4 tomb of this Winter family in a row all in very bad shape. Some broke and on the ground.

Not sure if you are out of this family but if you know someone that is it would be great if these tombs could be replaced.

One is of JOHN WILLIAM WINTER b/9 Dec 1846 and another is of FLOYD F. WINTER b/1827. I am in the process of seeing if I can get CW markers for these two but there are 2 or 3 wives that need new markers-----------jec

Mary Willie Melton was born in Calhoun county Mississippi Feb 1900. She Died in Bruce Mississippi. She was married 3 times. Her first Husband was Josepha Franklin Arbuckle. 2nd was Charles Earnest Houge Sr. and 3rd was Henry Buchanan. She was also divorce from all 3 men. She had 2 daughter from her first husband (Thelma Fronie & Josephine Mae), 1 son from her 2nd marriage (Charles Earnest Hogue Jr. AKA. JR), and 1 daughter from her 3rd marriage (Mary Etta Buchanan). I am not sure when they were married but I do know they were all married in Mississippi and I am almost sure that her and her first husband were married in Calhoun county, Mississippi. And I believe her and her second husband were married in Bruce. I think this is correct. I just can't find and hard paper fact to prove it to be correct.

PLEASE, if you can help with any of this please let me know. I would truly appreciate any help you can give to me.

I believe your May Willie Melton was Mary Willie Melton born Feb. 1900 in Yalobusha County listed in 1900 Yalobusha Census as follows: John M. Melton born 1868 Ms.
wife Annie born 1868 Ms.
son Charlie born Sept. 1886
son Make born April 1890
son Jeffie born July 1896
daughter Willie born Feb. 1900

By 1910 John M. Melton's wife was a widow and listed as
Saprona A. Melton age 43 widowed
son Jeffie age 11
daughter Mary W. age 10 (this is Mary Willie)
Sarah A. age 9
James J. age 5

This John Melton is the one that Married Saphrona A. McCammon (Annie)this may why she was known as Fronie also. on Oct. 7, 1882 in Yalobusha County. I believe her parents may have been Arron McCammon and Saphonia Clyburn. I do know that in 1910 this family was living right next door to my line John Baker Melton and Victoria. I will dig up more on them to see what I find...

I think that may be Robert Fisk who is a second cousin to me. Our line did end up in Grenada and I still have many cousins there. We just have a Brick Wall with our Grandpa Christopher Fisk who had a 1/2sister Mary Etta by the SS doc. on him and by her death cer. We were hoping some of the living family may have more info or maybe even pic's of Mary Etta and Christopher. Annie Mae Chaney that married Willie Frank Fisk was Mary Etta's daughter and may even still be living in the Bruce area. We have found where some of her kids still may and married into Galloway, Easley, Oliver lines.

I have been researching for quite awhile on my line and have new info of possible links to Calhoun County that may be able to help me. My grandfather Christopher Fisk born 1881 had a half sister named Mary Etta possible Clark that married a Columbus Chaney from Bruce Ms. They had a daughter Annie Mae Chaney that married a Willie Frank Fisk. I was told that many of her kids still live in the Bruce Area. Some may have married into the Galloway, Oliver,Easley lines.I would love to find someone that may have more info on how my Grandfather was connected to Mary Etta( we belive they had the same mother Caroline Graves)Thanks so much.....

Need help with family line: I have Mary Etta Chaney burried in Mt. Comfort Cemetery next to her husband Columbus Chaney, she had a daughter Annie Mae Chaney that married a Willie Frank Fisk and I think some of this line may still be living in the Bruce Area. Annie Mae Fisk (nee Chaney) had Pearline, William Paul, Dudley C., Bertha, Etta Lou Fisk. Some of my research shows them marring into the Oliver, Galloway, Stone lines but have not been able to make a connection to any one researching this line. Mary Etta Chaney was suppose to be a half sister to my Grandpa Christopher Fisk (Father Sam)by the same mother Caroline Graves but I have not been able to find any thing to prove this yet.I did find Mary Etta listed as a Clarke in 1910 with 2 children William and Bertha, then by 1920 she was with Columbus Chaney and William and Bertha were listed as Kendall. My Dad said William Kendall was a Preacher and moved on to Arkansas? I would love to find more info on this Chaney line if any one could help... Thanks
