VETERAN DURANT RESIDENT DIES/CHARLES PHILLIPS RITES SUNDAY;LONG ILLNESS
"Charles Edward Phillips, of Durant, passed away at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis,Thursday, March 27, following an illness of about six months. Mr. Phillips was born October 5, 1870 in Oak Harbor, Ohio. He moved to Mississippi in 1904 where he was engaged in the stave mill business. He and his family made their home in Durant for the past three years where he operated a cafe. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon, March 30 at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. J. H. Street, local pastor, conducting and assisted by the Rev. Ira Metts, Baptist pastor of a Jackson church. Interment was in the Mizpah Cemetery with the Southern Undertaking Association of Durant in charge. Surviving him are his widow Mrs. Pearl Turner Phillips, five sons, Edwin Phillips of Toledo, Ohio; Paul Phillips, Durant; Charles T. Phillips, Jackson; Raymond Phillips, Philadelphia, Ms.; and
C.E. "Buster" Phillips, Durant; three daughters, Mrs. John Heskett, Helena, Ark.; Mrs. John James, Miami, Florida; Miss Alice Phillips, Durant; two sisters Mrs. Will Nelms and Mrs. Sandford Miller both of Toledo, Ohio; and one brother, Bert R. Phillips, Toledo. Also 15 grandchildren and one great granddaughter survive him. The out-of-town persons who attended were, Mr. & Mrs. C. E. Stanford, Jackson; Mr. & Mrs. Eddie White, Mrs. E. A. Turner, Claude Harbin, Mrs. B. B. Harbin. Miss Daisy White, of Grenada; Leon Kennedy, Kosciusko; Mrs. Joe Heskett and children, Andrew Heskett, Helena, Ark.; Mr. & Mrs. Marion McCellan, Mr. & Mrs. Otho Bradley, Miss Pauline Herman, Miss Ella Mae Malone, Miss Ruth Johnson, of Lexington; and Mrs. Gladys Garden of Pickens. Mrs. W. A. Oswalt of Lexington."
