If he's buried at the Union Seminary Baptist Church, it's in an unmarked grave. In the Old Union Cemetery (in the woods across the street), is a J. T. Whittington, b. 26 Jun 1836, d. 2 Oct 1901, 65y, 3m, 6d, "Husband--In Memory of". Beside him is M. A. Whittington, b. 4 Sep 1842, d. 9 Mar 1907, "Mother." I grew up in Jasper county, though I no longer live there. What I can tell you about newspapers is that the Bay Springs Municipal Library just has microfilm of local newspapers only back as far as 1915. I don't know who has them prior to that time. If you find out, I'd love to know! Good luck in your search.
