Hedgepeth and Pitman

In response to the above references on the Hedgepeth and Pitman families of Lawrence Co., MS, I have the following to add:
HEDGEPETH----
There were three females in 1790 Robeson Co., NC who were named Charity Hedgepeth. Two of them were mother and daughter and the third was their next-door neighbor (and probably a sister-in-law). Briefly, here are synopses of the 3 Charity Hedgepeths:

1) Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth who is the "Charity Hedgepeth" in the 1790 Robeson Co., NC census. This woman was the mother of Jesse Hedgepeth (m. Alice Ward) who moved to MS shortly after their 1818 marriage in Robeson Co. (Jesse lived briefly in the late 1840s in Pike Co., AL near his brother, John Hedgepeth, before moving back to MS). This Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth was the daughter of Jacob Braswell of Nash Co. (formed from Edgecombe Co.), NC and is named as a daughter (who pre-deceased him) in his 1815 will. He confirmed in his will that the slave woman, Pink, whom he had lent to his daughter and that she had bequeathed to an heir in her own will was to remain as disposed of in dau. Charity's will. This Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth left an 1805 will (probated Jan 1806) in Robeson Co.; she left the slave woman "Pink" to her Ard grandson. According to Robeson Co. descendants, this Charity's husband was Benjamin Hedgepeth. I am still working on proof of this, but I lean toward this statement being correct. (I have more details on this if anyone is interested.) Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth named in her 1805 will her daughter, Charity Hedgepeth[Jr.]. More on her follows next.

(2) Charity (Hedgepeth) Alford (b. 4 April 1787, Robeson Co., NC) was the dau. of Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth, presumably by Benjamin?? Hedgepeth of Nash, Bladen, and Robeson Counties, NC. Benjamin Hedgepeth appears to have died between 1786-1790 as he witnessed a deed for Arthur Braswell (uncle of Charity Braswell Hedgepeth) in 1786 in Bladen Co., NC and wife? Charity is a widow and head of household in the 1790 Robeson Co., NC census. Although Charity Hedgepeth[Jr] was unmarried at the time her widowed mother named her in her 1805 will, she married a few months later on 9 Dec 1805 to Elias ALFORD (who was b. 21 October 1779 Robeson Co., NC; d. 28 July 1858 Alfordsville, Robeson Co., NC). Charity (Hedgepeth) Alford d. 1 June 1856. Incidentally, Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth in her 1805 stated she was sick and weak in body. I believe that her daughter Charity[Jr] married either shortly before or just after her mother's death, since the will was probated in Jan 1806. Also, the Alford family is well documented with family Bible records. Regarding the 1790 Robeson Co., NC census, this Charity (Hedgepeth) Alford would have been one of the females (and would have been age 3) in her widowed mother's household.

3) Mrs. Charity (--?--) Hedgepeth was the wife of Peter Hedgepeth. Peter Hedgepeth is enumerated next door to the widowed Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth (who presumably was the widow of Benjamin Hedgepeth) in the 1790 Robeson Co. census. This Peter and Charity Hedgepeth appear in deed records in Nash and Robeson Counties, NC. Peter Hedgepeth was a Rev. War soldier. In the late 1790s, Peter and Charity Hedgepeth moved with several Robeson Co. families to Union Co., SC. There, Peter is listed in the 1800 Union Co. census as "Peter Hetchpith." Peter left a will there in 1808 naming his wife Charity and his "only child and daughter" Mary Bullard. Thus we know that this couple had no other children.

PITMAN----
Charity (Braswell) Hedgepeth had a sister--Lucretia (Braswell) Pitman. Lucretia was the wife of Robert Pitman (son of Nathan Pitman who moved from Edgecombe to Robeson Counties, NC and then to Choctaw Co., MS where he died 3 Dec 1843; Nathan Pitman was married to Elizabeth Etheredge.) Lucretia (Braswell) Pitman is named as an heir in the 1815 Nash Co., NC will of her father Jacob Braswell. Her husband Robert Pitman was the executor of the 1805 will of his wife's sister, Charity Braswell Hedgepeth. Robert and Lucretia Pitman moved from Robeson Co., NC to Monroe and Lawrence Counties, MS. I suspect that Abigail Pitman (wife of James Cliburn) mentioned in your post above is a descendant of this couple.

We have had much discussion on the families above on our Hedgepeth list on Rootsweb.
