It appears that we are indeed related. My records indicate that Willie Broughon was born about 1882 and married Thomas Childress in 1899. I have no further info on the family of Thomas and Willie Broughton Childress. I would appreciate any info that you are able and willing to share.
Nathaniel E. Broughotn was born about 1825 in Monroe County, AL. His father was James R. Broughton. I have not established the identity of his mother. The marriage took place in the 1820s and she died in the early 1830s. The courthouse records were destroyed in a fire in 1833.
Nathaniel E. Broughton can be found in two places on the 1850 census. He is listed in the household of his father in Mobile, AL and in the household of his grandfather in Greene County, MS. The grandfather died in Greene County, MS in 1852; Nathaniel E. Broughton is listed in the 1853 Mississippi State census in Greene County. He marries his unknown 1st wife about 1854; returns to Alabam and has two sons, James (b ca 1855) and John (B. 1857); his 1st wife dies and he marries Mary J. J. Hays in 1860 Mobile, AL. He is listed in the Home Guard of Mobile County during the Civil War. After the war he appears to move to Lauderdale County, MS; kills a man there in 1868; is tried for murder; convicted of manslaughter; sentenced to two years in prison; and is released before the 1870 census. I "suspect" that during his time in prison the two older boys were sent to live with their granfather in Mobile while the wife and younger children went to live with Hays relatives. I am still looking for the death dates for both Nathaniel E. and Mary Hays Broughton. I suspect that both died between 1882 (birth of Willie) and 1900 census.
