Classification: Biography
Surnames: CARTER, RESTER
Isaac Carter (B. 29 Oct 1756 Duplin Co, NC- not VA D. 3 May 1840 Perry Co, MS) married Christiana/Christina ____ (maiden name possibly Rester B. c1758 D. 27 May 1840 Perry Co, MS). Isaac Carter was the son of Matthew & Patience Lamb Carter of Duplin Co, NC area. Isaac had two known (proven) brothers, Matthew (1745-1812 went to Jack Co, MS) & Thomas (c1750s-1840s went to Perry Co, MS also). Isaac can be found in various deeds in NC to GA. He obtained his GA Passport 27 Apr 1809 & came to MS Terr (early Wayne, later Greene, & later Perry Co.s). Isaac started paying taxes in MS Terr in 1810. Platt records show that he first owned 203.9 acres on Leaf River. Present day New Augusta, MS was included in this property. Isaac can be found in 1816 Terr Census for Greene Co, MS then in 1820-30 Perry Co, MS censuses. In the 1841 Tax Rolls for Perry Co, MS, Estate of Isaac Carter was: 363 acres; 1 watch; 52 cattle; & 8 slaves. Isaac was Rev War Soldier in NC; he enlisted 25 May 1781 in Bailey's Co., 10th Reg. This service accepted by DAR & SAR. The local Hattiesburg SAR Chapter is the Isaac Carter Chapter. Some have said that Isaac was also a Loyalist in the Rev. War. This is unfounded as the dates of his service as Patriot interfers with the dates of the Loyalist Isaac Carter's service. (That other Isaac went to FL.) Another Isaac people confuse ours with was the one who settled in Pike CO, MS. They are no known relation. No pension records were found for our Isaac's Rev War service. Isaac & Christina Carter had 6 proven children: Matthew, William Sr., Rester, Abner, & two daughters that were deceased by 1832. A possible child was Leodicia Carter who marr. Edwin S. Carraway. The desc. of Isaac Carter have witnessed the changes of our world & many remain in Perry Co, MS area. His desc were there when the outlaw James Copeland was hung in 1857 in Old Augusta. His daughter-in-law, Isabella Mcleod Carter McSwain, was there when the Union Soldiers came through & destroyed property & livestock. Isaac's land started on banks of Leaf River across from Old Augusta, which was where he & wife & others were buried. The mode of living these pioneers endured speaks of their strength. It is known that the Indians referred to Old Augusta as the "Three Smokes"- the smoke was from white settlers chimneys, one of those was Isaac's.
