Vines family, 1930s on

We are looking for information on Elisha VINES and his wife Maranda Jane MIZE VINES. They were recorded in Tishomingo County in the 1930 census.

Elisha was born in 1856 in Jefferson County, Alabama, and Maranda was born in 1860 in Fulton County, Arkansas. Their daughter married an ESTES, also recorded in 1930 in Tishomingo County.

In particular, we are looking for info about the death and burial of Elisha and Maranda VINES.

That is excactly where I am. Can't prove it but family believes Ellen is Basil and Mary's daughter. Family info has had Basil listed as father.

The information I have on my great grandfather Basil born about 1833 does not include an Ellen. I believe that his father was also named Basil and his wife was also Mary and I have no info on the first Basil's siblings.

I have a John M. Moore who served in Company K, 20 Miss. infantry under S.T. Oldham. Ihave a copy of certificate of disability discharge approved 1/26/1864. I doubt he is the same person but you can check. I can't find his parents,spouse or children. My grandfather is Charlie C. I am interested in finding the cemetery Samuel Ezell is buried in also. I have searched all of the cemeteries that are listed on the Internet for Tishomingo County, Mississippi and I still can't find it. However, I have heard that he is buried in this county. I am a direct descendant of Samuel Ezell and his wife, Hannah (Craft) Ezell. I know they had two children, Daniel (who married Angie Caroline Defoor) and Martha Ann (who married James Callaway Defoor, brother to Angie). James and Martha are my great grandparents. If anyone has any more information regarding this family, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

My grandfather Jesse Green Harris was born in Tishomingo County 1860. His Fathers name was Basil. He was born abt 1833. I do not know names of Basils siblings but some of Jesses children have similar names, Olen Washington,Amanda Jane, and William C.

This woman is hiding from me and any help would be great. Martha Ledbetter was born abt 1820 in VA, and died around 1856, I had believed it was in Mississippi. She married a JAMES (JIM) ROWELL, also born in 1820 in VA, and had two daughters Mary 'Lucy' Rowell, b Nov 4, 1840 Va, d Aug 4,1921 Dodd City, Fannin Co Tx, In 1858 Lucy married Moses K Ayres, in Alcorn, Ms, in 1865 she married Gustavus Weathers and in 1899 she married unknown Mr Bishop. The other child was Rebecca ROWELL b, Dec 14,1845 Tn , d July 17, 1899 Fannin Co Tx, she married Wm T NASH....the girls' mother, Martha , later married a Wm Alexander , Aug 28, 1856 Tishomingo, Ms and in 1860 Martha, and Mr Alexander and daughter Rebecca Rowell are living in the house. After 1860 I no longer find Martha, thinking all the while that she stayed in Mississippi, now am beginning to wonder if she did go to Texas, yet I am not finding her in any haystack. Any hints appreciated...P.S. I used to get notifications when someone responded to a query on rootsweb, but this does not occur anymore...does anyone know why?

Florence Kennedy married H.A. Dial September 27, 1893 in Prentiss County, MS.

On the transcription of this record, he is listed as A.A. Dial.

Forence's parents seem to be W.S. Kennedy & Catherine ?

Margaret Ann Kennedy married Thomas Henry Tipton December 22, 1892 in Tishomingo County, MS. She was the daughter of Dock Riley Kennedy & Sarah Jane Tyre.

I have not found Nettie Kennedy, but I do expect her to be related to Margaret A. Kennedy.

Yes, Dial is certainly a familiar surname here; in fact, my husband's aunt married a Dial and they are buried here in our city cemetery, Oak Grove. Scruggs and Gilchrist are familiar names too - as is Canady - which is a variation of Kennedy. Many Kennedy folk here too.

Judy, I live about an hour drive from Tishomingo Co. Ms.
My grandmother was Alice Helton Wilemon, her father was
Henry Helton, his father was Peter Helton. My grandmother's
mother was Lucinda Parsons Helton, her mother was Philadelphia Nunley Parsons. I think we share alot of our
family names. I have lots more information.

Joseph Johnson was my husband's grandfather. His first wife, Eula Morgan Brown Johnson, died in childbirth in 1912. He then married Ethel Jones Bullard. There are still some of Joe and Ethel's grandchildren living in and near Tishomingo County.

I have a Dial Mills in my family tree, his father was Thomas Mills. Siblings were John (1811-1827 ),Chesley Davis Mills (1802- 1857 ), William Ellis Mills ( 17 May 1807 S.C.- 10 Feb 1881 1881 in Ar. )my g-g-grandfather,Gilliam E. Mills ( 1801 S.C.-1 May 1828 Ga., there was one or two more. Hi, my great grandfather, Henry Allen Dial, was born in N.C. or Ga. around 1850-1865 and he lived in Tishomingo Co., Ms. with his wife Florence and her maiden name was Canady. Florence Canady would have married Henry around 1870- 1895 or so. Henry also had a sister or cousin who was in that area around the same time and she was married to a Scruggs. My grandfather's name was William Richard Dial and he was born in Boone, Ms. somtime around 1910 or so and he married Ina Gilchrist and her mothers name was Tiddel, Tiddle,Tittle or Tittel. My great grandfather Henry Allen Dial married Florence Canady or Canaday and they lived in Iuka, Ms. at one time do you have any information about these people. My great grandfather was several years older than his wife Florence and may have even been married before marrying her. He would have been born around 1850-1865 or so. We are cousins.

I am still looking for a marriage record for Solon "Sol" Thornton & Callie Helton.

I visited Tishomingo Co., MS in 2007 to do some genealogical research. The Circuit Court did not have a record of their marriage.

I contacted the Circuit Court in Prentiss Co. to inquire if they were married there. I was assured that they did not have a record of Sol & Callie's marriage.

The Circuit Court in Alcorn Co. was unable to look up a record for me.

I plan to visit Tishomingo Co., MS in late Sept 2009. Maybe we can meet and exchange info.

Sol Thornton was from Hickman Co., TN. I have discovered that a number of people from that co. married in Alcorn Co., MS. Perhaps, I can locate a copy of Sol & Callie's marriage record at the Circuit Court in Alcorn Co.

Query re the surnames Parson & Parsons in Tishomingo Co., MS

I am researching the descendants of Jonathan Parsons b. 01 Jul 1797 in Surry Co., NC & wife Lydia Patterson b. abt 1800 in Surry? Co., NC.

I know that enumerators and others were often careless when it came to spelling surnames.

I have the Tishomingo County Mississippi Cemeteries and the index. I found listings for the surnames Parson & Parsons. According to the book, Jonathan Parson 01 Jun 1799 - 19 Jul 1861 is possibly buried in the Parson Cemetery. (See page 272.)

Are the people whose surname is Parson related to the Parsons I am researching?

I am also researching the surname Helton. I discovered that there were at least two Helton lines living in the area. It appears that they were not related.

I am hoping that someone living in Tishomingo Co. can enlighten me re the suranmes Parson and Parsons.

I have a family mystery I am trying to track down that you or someone may be able to help me with. (It may even help you fill in a gap) I am attempting to track down my great-grandfather. My grandfather was born in 1905 so the Adams I am looking for would have probably been born somewhere between 1875 - 1887. My great-grandmother was Arizona Carpenter and my grandfather was Toy Adams. If they were married at all it would have been for a very brief period. I wished I had more information. I have done quite a bit of searching but found nothing definitive. I am probably going to have to rely on someone's family story to connect the link.

Have read the preceding reply, and am not sure it completely answers your question. What I always heard called Paden's Mills was located slightly northwest of the existing small town of Paden, MS, in Tishomingo County. The actual site of the mills, also called "Burnt Mills" because they were burned during the civil war, may have been taken by the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.

I do not find a Dial Mills in our Tishomingo County Cemetery book; however, there are lots of Mills in the Alcorn County Cemetery book - but not a Dial Mills. I looked in the Tish Co 1850 census and he lived near some of my ancestors in the northernmost part of our county; a son Elijah who was 17 in 1850 is listed; there is a Eli Mills buried in the National Cemetery in Corinth - died in 1862. I will also post this to our county Rootsweb email listing for possible help from others. I know that I have looked or heard of this Dial Mills before . . .

Thank you so very much for your response. My 2nd Greatgrandfather was William Marion Young Jr. The census has him listed with Alonzo and Jesse Young. While living in Indiana, Alozo stopped going by the surname Young, and went to Alonzo Jones. I'm curious as to if you know the story why? Alonzo mothers maiden name was Jones. Kinda confused as William Jr is two years older than Alonzo. I know these are things that happened way before our times and don't have all the answers, but would love to hear anything you or other family may know about Alonzo.
