Ed Miller was 30 years older than his wife. It makes me believe that he may have been married before. He worked for the railroad as a porter while in Kansas. They could have met on his travels. I don't have a clue.
Seriously, I do wonder about those 30 years. People often do not have to be born where census has there birth place.
Thanks for your interest.
Sandra

I have looked into various records on familysearch.org, and I have found the family I believe you are speaking about. This is what I have, but this is not all that could have been found by me. Because you wanted a start, I think I am giving you what you needed, but I have a habit of going overboard:

1850 Federal Census of East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana: John B. Higginbotham (48 years old) was born in Georgia. He is married to a Charity (38 years old) born in Mississippi and they have children: B. P. (23), William C. (19), Mary A. (17), John J. (15), Ira M. (13), Samuel G. (10), Edward M. (8), David (5), and L.M.C. (2).

In the 1860 Federal Census, the Higginbothams are still living in the East Feliciana area. These people include: C. C. Higginbotham (born 1811 in Mississippi), W. C. Higginbotham, L.C.M. Higginbotham, C.C. Higginbotham, D.P. Higginbotham, N.C. Higginbotham, L.C.D. Higginbotham, and I.M Higginbotham. C.C. being Charity, the rest being her children.

By 1870, Ira Higginbotham, a son of Charity and John, is living with his wife Rachel and children: Estella (12), Sergeant (3) and Charity (10 months) (named after her grandmother).

In 1900 Federal Census of ED 53 Ward 6, Lathams Precinct, East Feliciana, Louisiana: Ira is now married to Flora Higginbotham, and has been since 1896. Ira indicates he was born August 1837. Flora indicates being born in April, 1855. Living in the household are: Ira, Flora, Luda Deckar (daughter; born August 1869), Edgar Decker (grandson; born October 1896), Charlena Neson (granddaughter; born October 1890), Emma and Minnie Sample (daughter in laws; born in 1875 and 1884), and a boarder: Willie Gumby born October 1878 in Mississippi. By 1910 Federal Census of Police Jury Ward 6, East Feliciana, Louisiana, Ira is living with Flora and his grandson Edwin Decker.

In the Louisiana Deaths Index, 1850-1875, 1894-1956, I. M. Higginbotham (Ira) is shown to have died January 10, 1923 in Nesom, Louisiana, age 85. In the United States Applications for Headstones for Military Veterans, 1925-1941, Ira M. Higginbotham s listed on January 10, 1923 in Clinton, Louisiana, indicating a place of burial. Other death records found: Olla Estelle Jackson bon about 1857 to Ira and Rachel Miller Higginbotham died November 22, 199 in Clinton, Louisiana, age 82. She was the spouse of I.L. Jackson. Edwin Marvin Higginbotham was born about 1877 to Ira and Rachel Miller Higginbotham and died November 14, 1952 in Shreveport, Louisiana; the spouse of Joy Higginbotham. Ernest Leith Higginbotham was born about 1874 to Ira M. Higginbotham and Racheal A. Miller and died October 4, 1935 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; spouse of Mary Effie Seguin. David Pipes Higginbotham was born about 1844 to John Brown Higginbotham and Charity Carroll and died November 25, 1926 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In the Texas, Deaths, 1890-1976, I found Laura C. Delee, born about 1857 in Clinton, Louisiana to Johnie Higginbotham and Charity Carroll and died September 23, 1931 in Dallas, Texas. It shows she did housework for a living, and was the widow of W. C. Delee. She was buried September 24, 1931 at Grove Hill Cemetery.

In the 1900 Federal Census I previously mentioned with Ira Higginbotham, Ira's family is living in close proximity to Ira's brother, David Pipes Higginbotham. David is shown to be born July 1845 and was widowed. Children of his were shown to be: Pinkie (born March 1880), Mary (born February, 1882), Edward (born July 1887), and Johnnie (born March, 1891).

Also, judging by the birth dates of the children, Edward would have to had married Beatrice in about 1915. Because she was born in Tennessee, he probably met her during his immigration to Kansas. Perhaps he was leaving Mississippi at that time because of the increasing racial ferocity, and met just met Beatrice along the way.

Just a thought,

Jonathan Puckett

This is what I've been able to find out, based off of census records:

1920 Federal Census of Sedgwick County, Kansas: Edward Miller (57 years old) indicates that he was born in Mississippi. He is married to a Beatrice who is 21 years of age and was born in Tennessee. Beatrice indicates both of her parents were born in Tennessee as well. All of their children together were born in Kansas, and they are as follows: Charles E. (6 years), Earnest (5 years), Bertha (3 years), and Chester (1) year.

1930 Federal Census of Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas: Ed Miller (68 years) was born in Mississippi and is still married to Beatrice (34) years, from Tennessee. Their children, all of which were born in Kansas, are: Charles E. (16), Ernest (15), Bertha (13), Chester (11), Novella (10), Cisco (7), Valentino (5), Nevada (4), and Arminta (2).

1940 Federal Census of Ward 4, Wichita, Wichita City, Sedgwick, Kansas: Beatrice is widowed and is the head of the household. She indicates that she is 43 years old and has a 4th grade education. She was born in Tennessee. Children are:
1. Cisco; 17 years old, he dropped out in the 6th grade to work as a shoeshine boy. He is the only one working in the household.
2. Valintine; 15 years old
3. Nevada; 14 years old
4. Armenta; 11 years old
5. Deloris; 9 years old
6. Shirley Ann; 5 years old
7. Roland; 2 years old
8. Sylvia Faye; less than 1 year old

The ages of the children put the death date of Edward Miller in About 1939.

This is all I could find an I hope it answered some questions,

Jonathan Puckett

Pheriba was a daughter of Thompson Brister (born c.1800) and Martha Ann Hickman.

Here is the line from the older Thompson:
Thompson (b 1741),
Samuel (b 1780),
Thompson (b c.1800),
Pheriba (b 1825)

Too many Thompsons make it confusing.

My line does come from Thompson Bristow/Brister, born 1741, Middlesex Cty, Va. He had a son Thompson Brister, 1773, born in Greenville Cty, S.C., married to Susan Mitchell. They had 8 children, but I do not show a daughter named Pheriba. If your friend has further info that includes Pheriba as a child of my Thompson, I would be very interested. I have found the name Thompson Brister in more than one line.

My research shows that most, if not all, Bristers go back to Thomson Bristow, 1741 and Mary Ann Hockaday abt. 1745. The name seemed to change from Bristow to Brister at that point.

I have been researching the Bristers for a friend; they are not my family. He has ancestors in the Brister Cemetery in Nacogdoches TX. You guys might be realted since you are also in Texas. We are in the Dallas area. His line of descent from Thompson Brister Sr. is: son Samuel, his son Thompson, his daughter Pheriba who married Daniel C. Tyler, then follows the Tyler line to my friend's mother.

Thompson Brister (father of Temperance) was the son of Thompson Brister Sr. (1741-1818) and Mary Ann Hockaday. Samuel Brister (father of Samuel Hockaday Brister) was also a son of Thompson Sr. That would make S.H. first cousin of Temperance, if she was daughter of Thompson Jr.

Sorry, I left out. T. Mabry Brister's parents show to be Thompson Brister, Aug 12, 1773, and Susan Mitchell, Sept. 20, 1780. Their children were Temperance M., Elizabeth, Jane, Martha, Rhoda, Sarah, Susan, and Catherine.

Hope this is helpful.

Family records show the children of Samuel Brister and Rosannah Nolan to be: Samuel Hockaday, Mary, George Wilson, Charity, Sarah, Warrick, and William B.

I show T. Mabry Brister to be married to a first cousin, Samuel Hockaday Brister. They were the parents of my g-grandfather, Allen Thompson Brister. I have been attempting to determine if they were really cousins or if Mabry might have been her maiden name.

Thanks for your response.

I have received some copies from the "Mississippi Bristers" book, but the only children named of Samuel and Rosannah were Charity, George W., Sarah, and Warrick. They were minors at the time of Samuel's death in 1827.

From other sources I have found that the other children were Thompson, Susannah, Zedekiah, William B., John, Samuel Hockaday, and Mary.

In 1851, Samuel's wife Rosannah petitioned to sell property belonging to the estate and mentioned there were 11 children, but they were not named in the petition.

I have not been able to find any more info on the family of Samuel and Rosannah. Do you know who was the father of Temperance Mabry Brister?

My research indicates that S.H. married his first cousin, Temperance Mabry Brister, born Dec. 25, 1810/11. Not sure if this is accurate.
Betsy, I have searched until I am blue in the face, trying to find when and possibly what cemetery he was buried in. His name is Robert Jones, and his wife was Mary Jones (possibly Holloway-Jones, but not too sure about the Holloway part). He was born in England abt 1845, lived in Bethlehem, MS. abt 1880. A few of the children were James (Jim), Bush, and Charley (Charles??) Brooks. If your book lists the maiden name of his wife Mary, that would be a HUGE help. Thanks a million!!!!!
My mother Margaret Sue Huffman and her brother David Huffman ran the teoc store and cotton gin that was owned by the Joe McCain and his son Billy. This was in the early 1950's. McCain's land bordered the Huffman place which was where my mother was born. Can anyone tell me if Billy McCain is still living? My grandmother Lillian Huffman sold her property in the 60's but we go back often to see the old homeplace where my mother grew up with her mom, dad and 8 siblings.
