1866 Barry County Research Resource

In 1866, there was a militia enrollment of 814 Barry county men in nine companies organized by township. The section for Sugar Creek Township, south Barry County, has this interesting note, "Total No. of men Enrolled in the above Township is 155, all rebels but the Lieutenant." This strongly suggests the enrollment was not voluntary, with the enrollment more like a form of draft registration. In a decade when many men disappeared without a trace between the 1860 and 1870 censuses, this amounts to a mid-decade census of men in the county between the ages of 18 and 40 -- a useful research tool.
