During the Civil War our John C. Duncan began taking sick leave at Barry. This was info repeated in military records for the Civil War. Before the war John was in the census of 1860 with his wife Sara and children William, Reuben, Mildred, Joseph and Robert. This was in Van Buren, Arkansas. From family notes, while John was serving in the war his wife Sara's father died and her brother came from Osage County, MO. to take her home for the funeral. John and Sara originally were married and lived in Osage. I don't think Sara ever returned to Van Buren. We are not sure who John was staying with in Barry. There is mention of a hospital set up in Cassville for the soldiers. But it seems he never returned to Osage but stayed in the Barry and Stone area. He farmed in the area-this based on info from letters of friends that were in the military pension records. John remained weak and ill for the rest of his life. A letter states that he married someone named Mary. And then after she died and when he was very ill he married another person named Melissa Jane McGeehee. There were people in the area that cared for him in his last years. One of the families was the Rose family. We are wondering if any of this sounds familiar to anyone. Or if anyone can suggest a direction we can go to find out what happened to this family that seemed to have separated. There is also notes from people that say John's family went to Oklahoma. That there was Cherokee ancestry involved. Please someone give us some direction. Pattie Duncan
