My father went to school in Benton County. I have a book from his school days that has the following names in it: Glenn Dagley, Pat Llewellyn, Elizabeth Kochanouski, Betty Hansine Plummer, Shirley Page, Bill McCroske, Shirley Kochanouski, and Mary Elizabeth Roberts. Are there any family members to these people. If anyone wants this book they are welcome to it by emailing me at grandma168@sbcglobal.net

Good Morning from Palm Springs, CA. JC Nowlin was also my great-grandfather. My grandfather is from the third marriage and was the youngest of all kids. His name was also Joe C Nowlin from Benton Co. My mother was one of his twins, Beulah Fay Nowlin. I have recently posted a picture of JC on Ancestry.com -- Kelb Family Tree, garydkelb1. I have also been looking for his mother but without any luck.

I also posted headstones of Mary Temperance Nowlin Helmig and her two son. Gary

Thank you so much, Homer, for BOTH bits of info. I didn't know where Duroc was, either, except that it was/is in Benton Co.

Do you know if there is an "official" list of burials for Mossy Cem. available? I suspect you're right about this being the right cemetery, but it would be nice to prove it.

Thank you again! Doy

I found information that Lonnie was buried "near Duroc". I would guess they are all in the same cemetery. Thanks! Doy

Thanks Homer for the map and clarification. Just yesterday I discovered another "lost" cemetery, this time in Kentucky. It has met a similar fate as Lumpee. In this case, I've been fortunate to find a bible record that lists a number of burials.

Richard, it is my understanding the cemetery was located across the road and slightly diagonally from Big Buffalo. I was told the cemetery was bulldozed, gravestones buried, and the cemetery was made part of an existing field. :( It does not appear that a transcription or survey of the cemetery was done beforehand. However, I do agree that a number of small cemeteries were lost to the waters of Lake of the Ozarks.

Big Buffalo Cemetery is in Benton County. Located on Big Buffalo Road about 0.25 miles south of County Rd WW. If Sumfree/Lumpee cemetery was located "a few hundred feet down the road" it could well have been in the backwaters of Lake of the Ozarks.

My husband Eric Olof is a descendant. Dorotha Elaine Nicolson is my husband's paternal grandmother. She just passed at 100 3/4 on march 22, 2013. She was born June 6, 1912. She was raised by John and Maltilda(Tilly) Nicolson. They moved to Texas in about 1915, then on to Las Angeles. The story is that she is Jemima Brown Nicolson(Sanders) daughter . I can' t find any info on the Sanders. His name was George H. Sanders and they were performers with their own train cars and a traveling show. If anyone has any info, it would be wonderful.

Handwriting and spelling are bad in many censuses, and this was a Palmer family:

In the 1900 census they are recorded as Parmer.

The son John M. registered for the draft 1918 in Lincoln, married Verna Garroutte of Windsor 1919, and was in Johnson Co. 1920.

The daughter Emma married John H. I am trying to find information on William Pattersons mother Jane Patterson Kays. I have not been able to find anything about her. I was thinking that the Langfords might have something on her as she was Liz's mother in law.One would think that Jane would be mentioned in the marriage announcment if that ever took place at that time. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks James Kays

Right. This is the set of family I can only guess contains my Mathilda/Matilda. But what's weird is I can't find them either before or after the 1860 census. And I've paged through the 1850 and 1870 censuses. I have been to that cemetery and taken photos of the gravestone.

Thank you for the info on the early census records. She is on findagrave. In fact I think I contributed the photo of her gravestone. Matilda married John Pfahls. I have her death certificate - it says her father is George Gentry from Indiana and mother is listed as unknown.

I am not even sure the Benton MO Gentry family with Catherine and Matilda are "my" Gentry family, as she listed her place of birth as Indiana in later (married) census records and the death cert states she came from Indiana. But that family is the only CLOSE Matilda Gentry I can find.

Thank you David...this is indeed the family..
In 1843 Lucy Hart Nelson applied for a widowers pension as a result of John Nelsons service in the Revolution. John and Lucy are the grandparents of Mary Hathcock Hart. Lucy Hart Nelson was born in 1772 in Cumberland County North Carolina. Lucy and John were married in 1786. In the petition James Hart, the brother of Lucy Hart Nelson attests to the fact he was present at their marriage. Now, the James Hart of Coffee County and Hickory County wasn't born until around 1800. So, I'm wondering who the James Hart (brother of Lucy)is? The Father of my James Hart? Uncle? etc. The data I find on Lucy Hart Nelson says her parents were William and Anna Hart. So, without some oral history from the family,it is difficult to document the data.
Albert

I'm a little confused. My records -- and records at anc.com --indicate that the Mary Ann Alexander who was married to Valentine C. Hamman was the SISTER of Judge George. She was born in 1809 and died in 1860 in Benton Co., MO. Judge George did have a dau Mary Ann (b. 1828), but as far as I can tell, she married Zebulon Comstock "Zeb" Bishop in 1844, and then she died in 1846 in Benton Co. Doy

Lynda,

I found a Hammond with no "s." Valentine Hammond is the gentlemans name. He was married to the daughter of Judge George Alexander and had moved with that (huge) family from Bellefonte, Alabama to the Memphis, Tennessee area, and then to Missouri. They were some of the earliest settlers to the area. They are in the book quite a bit as the entire "war" surrounded their family. Also, a gentleman by the name of Ralph Hammond provided a letter for the book research. He was a decendent of the Hammond family. If this is your family, please let me know. I can provide the details from the book. I attached a cell phone pic of the index page.

I'm trying to figure out who these mysterious Gentry family members are in the 1860 Benton county census. Catherine is listed, born about 1829, and then three children (who I am not sure are her's) Mathilda Gentry b. 1843, Nancy Gentry b. 1847, John Gentry b. 1849, and Mary Gentry b. 1853. Mathilda is my direct line, and I'd love to know who her parents were and move up the line. Any help is appreciated.

This book chronicles families leaving Benton county and heading to Indian territory in Oklahoma. My great grandfather and his family are mentioned in this book. I have been searching our local libraries here in Oklahoma City trying to find a copy but have not had any luck. I even sought to purchase the book online but no publications are listed for sale. If you have this book and are willing to share or sale I would certainly appreciate it.

Yes .... Sarah Elizabeth Guinn (daughter of Daniel Guinn & Hannah Parsley) and twin sister of Amanda Guinn, ... Sarah Elizabeth Guinn married 20 Feb 1870, Benton Co., MO, to Lemuel David Roberts.

I see that your last post was 2009, you probably already have this figured out.

We are for GUINN males which descend from the Daniel GUINN and Hannah Parsley lineage, to participate in our Y-DNA Study with www.FamilyTreeDNA.com ... to determine which group of GUINN-GWIN-GWINN-GWYNN families he descended from. Several researchers claim he was from Lincoln Co., TN, which is close to Franklin Co., TN and several other GUINN's which were in northern Alabama during the early 1800's.

Thank you,
Michael A. Gwinn, (ret. USN), gwinnma@aol.com (575) 403-9654
GINN,GUIN,GWIN,GUYN,GWYN Project administrator
(and similar surnames, including "O" and "Mc" versions)
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx

The Slicker War was a "Hatfields & McCoys" type feud between the Turk and Jones families of south Benton County, and did not involve the German families or others of Cole Camp area.

Volume 1 of the 1969 White & Miles 'History of Benton County' covers the conflict and individuals in detail on pages 4e-10e.

Thanks for help in the look up.

What was the Slicker War and where can I find more information on it? Sounds interesting.

Terry
