Thank you for the info. The land grant you cite is what lead me to James. The land grant is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is the only place in Michigan that I can find a reference of James. My family was first noted in Orange County, New York, with an application for naturalization in 1833. I don't know if James came earlier as the obit says 1822. If that's true ( and that's why I wanted a lookup) this James and the other James are not the same. I also have found fleeting references to a Captain James in military records. I am hoping that some kind soul in Boone County can help me clear up the mystery.
