Are you really sure it was Sunnyslope that the gentleman was taken to. From what I heard that was for physical illnesses that were contagious. Last week I posted contact information for the St. Joseph State Hospital which was the local mental hospital for the past couple of hundred years. I worked in that mental health setting for thirty years before retirement and know that early on there were many folks there and most were long term often because they were dropped off due to peoples fears and lack of knowledge of mental illness or treatment at the time. Just as an aside I do recall the Sunnyslope hospital building also. It was closed when I first saw it from the 11th street road,It really did look like something out of a horror movie, but after the hospital closed, the building sat empty but before it was torn down it was used as a "house of ill repute" aka house of prostitution. In St. Joseph the authorities turned a blind eye to such activities as long as there were no complaints. I was told that the long winding drive way was watched for anyone not expected.
