Glad the info helped. If you need to research deaths in Mo. Go to Mo. digital heritage death records. They have records from 1910 to about 1962.
Good luck, Jay.

It helps that I started researching in 1976 when I was 27.
One reason why people don't make corrections is that they
start in their 60's and by the time the error is found
they're gone. And while I hate being responsible for putting
out bad data I hate seeing it uncorrected even worse.

Don, I'm not related to your families at all, but wanted to Thank You for attempting to correct research from 30 yrs ago. So many trees have been copied over and over and with the explosion of records being made available now much previous information that was "assumed" for lack of access to records can now be verified and corrected. However many do not attempt to correct or verify their previous information. So, wanted to commend you for your honesty and attempts to correct !!!

Can anyone tell me how I can get information on the Butler Co., Almshouse that was in Poplar Bluff in 1930? I am trying to find information it and on the man who was running it on the 1930 census, J. M. (James Meredith)Williamson and his wife, Mollie and daughter, Genevieve/Geraldine. I would also like to know where the Almshouse was located and any history of it. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
Charlotte McClain Christensen
ly68@charter.net

I just erased a massive reply that I am now rendering
moot. I made a bunch of weak assumptions 30 years ago that
have ended up in the Lail stuff that's now online all over
the place. The main thing I over-looked back then was out
of wedlock's. As I was typing earlier I suddenly realized
that I had really only considered George 1790 and his 2
sons for that and had totally ignored the girls.

George 1790 had 2 daughters. Catherine m. Obed. Nolen Ross
in 1827 and Ormenta m. Elijah Vinson in 1841. It couldn't
be Catherine so I looked to see if Ormenta could have had a
child before the marriage to Mr. Vinson. To make it brief
what I found was a marriage record of Arramenta Vinson to
Ezekial Hudson, followed by a marriage record of Aramenta
Hutson to John Pratt. So the Death Certificate was right
after all, A.J.'s mother was a Pratt so to speak. In my
opinion case solved.
I could not find a marriage license. His father was George W. Lale B. 1795 Burke N.C. was in Arkansas Territory in 1820. Was in Randolf Arkansas in 1830, married with children. Wife died and he married Elizabeth Ross, 6 Feb. 1840 who was 19. I think she would be his mother. George died in 1854 in Arkansas, A.J. Andrew Jackson Lale was born 16 Sept. 1840 & died 29 Feb. 1912, He is burried in Stephens Chapal, Dunklin co. mo. His death certificate shows his mother's maiden name as Pratt. I doubt if that is correct according to his father's marriage in 1840. Hope this helps,
Jay.

Ah, crud. It looks like his death certificate will not be as helpful as I had hoped, then. That's not too surprising. He lived to be 89 and outlived everyone in his generation of his family and at least one of his sons. I'll continue to look into his birth, though.

Andrew J. Lale was married to a Mary in 1860, Butler co. mo. census with 1 son William. He married Sarah Mc Coy in 1867. They are in Dunklin co. Mo, in 1870, 1880, 1900 census. Another A. j. Lale from Dunklin Co. Mo, married Lille Summers in 1904 and after that it is hard to trace A. J. & Sarah. Good luck in your search. Jay

I found Charles Dobbs, and the plot thickens.

Charles F. Dobbs was born in Illinois on 24 October 1875. He died 29 September 1965 in San Bernadino, California. His social security number indicates that he worked for the railroad, which is supported by the fact that he listed "r.r. track walker" as his occupation on his WWI draft card. I am certain that this is the Charles Dobbs I was looking for because he and Lee Bristo lived at the same address in 1918 and filled out WWI draft cards on the same day.

Charles' draft card lists him as having two nearest relatives, sons named Clarence and David L. Dobbs. I knew about Clarence, but David is a surprise.

According to his draft card, he would have been 24 when Lee Bristo was born. Since Lee and Charles did not share a last name, we've always worked from the assumption that they shared a mother. However, the age difference between them makes that seem slightly unlikely. There are several possible options. Either Lee was a late-in-life child (which, while unlikely, is possible), or Charles was his father's son (slightly more likely, but the names confuse that), or Charles is from an earlier generation in the family (but called each other brother), or Charles was completely unrelated but fostered Lee.

The truth of this relationship seems to be a complicated matter. I look forward to finding what it may be.

I have a couple that must have married about 1869 but I have had no luck on finding the marriage record as yet. As most of you know just because people lived in a place does not mean that they married in that place.

The bride was a Sarah L. McCoy. She was listed in the 1860 census in the HH of HD and Martha McCoy, age 6, so she would have been no older than 15 when she married. (There is a baby in Feb 1870.) Could she have married in either MO or AR without parental consent at that time?

The groom was AJ Lale who was at least 29 years of age in 1869 and a widower.

Note: I did check the marriage applications on the Butler Genweb site but there was nothing there on this.

a half-brother relationship would necissate that they would have a common parent. Either the father or mother.

since Anna died in 1905 she cannot be the common mother.

a half brother relationship may have been PC for the times.
the children could understand that as opposed to a "bastard" child.

Thank you for the help.

Clarence was Charles Dobbs' son and Lee Bristo's nephew. Several of my relatives are still living that knew them both.

I'm trying to find out about Lee & Charles' relationship and their childhood, their parents, and any information before Clarence was born. Unfortunately, any relatives with that knowledge are long since passed away.

That 1880 census is a great piece of information. It makes the situation with Charles Dobbs even more complicated, though. If Anna & Joseph were married in 1880, and apparently Dobbs was only born in 1890 or so, how can he be Lee's half brother with a different last name? Is he the result of an extramarital relationship, then?

I can't help but wonder if Charles was a foster brother or cousin rather than a half brother, but Lee always referred to him as his "half brother," and Charles took over the task of raising Lee after Anna's death.

Thank you for your fast reply! I hadn't found that Annie Johnson, and I'll try to see if I can learn more about her.

I was aware of Lee Bristo in the 1920 census. The man he was living with was a maternal uncle for Lee's nephew Clarence Dobbs. Harvil Spencer's name is spelled in a variety of ways in various records. In Lee's WWI draft card, and in the 1920 census, he's "Harvil Spencer." In the 1940 census, he's called "Orville Spencer," and his headstone reads "Arvil W. Spencer," which is why I used that last name.

I'll definitely look in the Clay County records, too! Thank you for the tip. I'm pretty new at this, so I'm glad for any help I can get.

There is an Annie Johnson, age 3 in the 1880 census. Father named William age 60 living at cane creek, Butler Co. Don't know if this will help or not. The man Lee was living with in 1920 is Harvil Spencer and Lee's name is spelled Bristoe in the 1920 census. You bcould try Butler Co. MO. marriages for Lee Bristoe. Some people from Butler co. got married in Clay co. Arkansas. Good luck in your search. Jay.

Hi I'm trying to find information on my great-grandparents, Anna & Joseph Bristo.

Joseph Bristo may have been Anna's second husband. They had a child together named Lee in 1899, and Joseph left shortly afterward.

Anna raised Lee and another boy named Charles Dobbs, who was called his "half-brother." (I'm not sure of the nature of the connection. My family has always taken the relationship at face value, but since I can't find any records, I'm not certain what the relationship was.)

We do know that Johnson (Johnsen?) was Anna's maiden name. So far, I have not found any records for her.

Joseph's fate is unknown after he left Anna.

Anna was killed in a hunting accident in approximately 1905. I have been unable to find a death certificate (on the Missouri SOS website) for her or any other record of her life. I would imagine that her death was news, but I do not have access to any archives that would allow me to search for that information.

Lee lived with Arvil & Mandy Spencer in 1920 in Butler County, in Ash Hill Township, so I've been working from the assumption that he hadn't moved too far away from his birthplace. Charles Dobbs apparently married into the Spencer family, but he was not listed in the 1920 census of the household.

Lee always spelled his name "Bristo," but it's possible a spelling error was introduced in his lifetime.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I've reached a dead end on this branch of my family, and it's only 100 years old, so that's bothering me.

Thank you for looking into this. The symbol is very faded but I can make out the letters T, M & A. The letters are seperated, the T on the left the M at the top and the A on the right. What makes this stone unusual is the reference to "Sweet Home Chamber 2718, Poplar Bluff, MO. I have never seen an inscription like this on a grave monument. This grave is located in the African-American section of this cemetery. Thanks again for your help.

Bill

Hi, I teach in Poplar Bluff during the week and I grew up there. I will take this information with me and see what I can find out for you. Mom is 88 and has lived there all of her life. All of my grandparents lived in PB, too. The Masonic Lodge is just down the street from Mom's. I will check there, the library, and the genealogy society members that work at the archives.
What was the symbol's shape?
I know there is the Eastern Star group for women with the Masons. I don't know if they were organized that long ago. I will see what I can find out.

Hi Sheila,
I haven't checked Ripley County! Enoch's father, James M. Triplett was a minister in Stoddard. He married Enoch and his first wife. I don't know if he married Enoch and Sarah, but if he did, it still should have been filed with the county. The only clue I have is the 1910c, Neely, Butler County MO, where it stated they have been married for two years.

I would love any historical information you have Neely as my father, grandfather and great grandfather lived there and two of them were born there.

Regards,
Barb
Hi, Barbara,
I was wondering if you have tried the old newspapers in Butler and Stoddard counties for a wedding notice. The Poplar Bluff, MO public library has the early newspapers on microforms.
The marriage aplications are indexed on the Butler Co. MO page at www. rootsweb.ancestry.com. If you haven't checked those.
If you know what church they may have attended, maybe a record of their marriage would be found there.
If they were in living in the Neelyville area of Butler Co., MO did you check Clay Co., Arkansas and Ripley Co., Mo?
I live in Southeast, MO, so if something turns up in those online applications, if you haven't been through them yet and it gives you a glue to a marriage date. I could help you out and get a copy of the record. I am researching families in Butler, Ripley, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, and Mississippi Counties in MO and they came from Graves, KY, Benton, TN, and Lawrence, IL. If I can help you out let me know. I also have some historical records on Neelyville my Aunt and Uncle lived there for many years, she grew up there. Sheila

Marriage Record Help

Hello everyone,

I have been looking for a marriage record for at least 10 years now. I have checked entire states/counties in hopes of finding it. I would like to know if there are any obscure or odd records that I don't know of, that maybe someone else might know, where I might find the marriage record of:

Enoch Franklyn Triplett, b. 1878 in MO and Sarah (Sallie) Margarete Tate. b. 1868 KY. Sarah has previous married names of Graves and Young. Enoch was married previously as well.

I have them both living in Neely MO when they were single, between 1900 and 1910. Sarah was a widow in 1900 (from previous marriage). The 1910 Neely, Butler MO census show Enoch and Sarah as married for two years. I have checked every source known to me along with surrounding states.

These two are my great grandparents. I have burial, death records, census records and a bible record. They were married until death and both are buried in the Triplett cemetery in Stoddard.

I am at a loss as to why I can't find it. I have checked every MO website, historical societies, courts and made phone calls etc.

Any advice?
Barb

My guess is that it was some type of pig/hog flu, that eventually hopped over to humans, and resulted in the world wide flu crises. Between the flu bug, and WWI, nearly a whole generation of young men died. It's just a thought!

The Poplar Bluff Railroad Museum in the old Frisco Depot has a lot of pictures of the area. Some of the Museum board members also have collections of photos from the area. The city is also renovating the Union Pacific Depot building. The Southeast MO University archives in Cape Girardeau also has a lot on the railroads in Southeast Missouri. Many of the other towns have some pictures in their old depot buildings that have been put to use as visitor's centers, etc. I have been working on getting photos together from the Poplar Bluff area, since one grandfather worked in the roundhouse for Missouri Pacific and the other was a clerk in the Frisco Depot. Several of the area historical groups also have picture collections including railroad depots and yards. I have lived in the area all my life, if you want, I can get some contact jnformation together for you for several of the towns in Ripley, Butler, Wayne, Bollinger, Stoddard, Cape Giradeau, and Mississippi Counties. My genealogy covers this area so I have been to several of the libraries and archives in the area. Let me know if I can be of help.
Sheila Mickey Porter

Hello, I saw that you posted that you are a g-grandson to a John Moore.
I am descended from a Moore family from SE Missouri and my Brick wall is John Moore... probably a generation or so back than your John Moore would be. but in the endless search for family information I am making this inquiry My Father was Bernie Lloyd Moore and was born in Bernie Missouri on Feb 26, 1909. His father was Harry Moore, born in Indiana about 1860 to William Henry Moore (apparently called Henry) and Elizabeth Ann Clayton., who were born in 1837 , I know WH was born in Ohio but Elizabeth may have been born in Virginia. William Henry was the son of JOHN Moore and Susanna Lowery. John was born (we believe) in 1796 in Pennsylvania. Susanna was born in 1806. They married in JAn 1827 in Zanesville Ohio or Muskingum Ohio, There is a possibility that Susanna's last name may have also been Mauser and that John may also have been married to a Jane Nelson. The only thing I am sure of is that John and Susanna were in several federal census and that the 1796 and 1806 birthdates fit the census info. they lived in Ohio but they have moved to Missouri after 1850 , they had 7 children, the boys were Abraham, William Henry and John Hestein. I know that both William and John had sons named John and haven't much info on hand re: Abraham. If this sounds like anyone you know or have heard of please contact me. I have been looking for this Ancestor for a zillion years! I know that some of my Dads Uncles and brothers stayed In Missouri and some of them , mainly the younger kids, (born after 1909) moved to the west coast and that John Hestein and Lucy Clayton moved to Oregon about 1900 give or take 10 years (HAHA)
I have names of Dad's Uncles and his brothers if more info would be the determining factor, Grandpa Harry was married to Casadie Edmundson 2nd to Nora Casey Porch. They lived in Butler and Wayne Counties. WIlliam Henry and Elizabeth who was called "Aunt Betty lived in Poplar Bluff

Use the same site. There will be a place for pree 1910 search. I think you have hit a brick wall. If you check the 1900 census ou will find Mauna Spradling is the person who had Bessie & clarence. Mauna was born July 1871 in Ky. Bessie was born in IL. Feb. 1892, Father born in IL, mother
born in KY. Clarence born DEc 1899 in MO. father born in IL. mother born in Ky. I don't think this is John Spradling's widow. I will try to check if Mauna remarried in butyler co. later. Jay.
