Probate records for Camden County 1850

Does anyone know who I would contact to find probate records for someone who died in 1850 in Camden County? I am trying to find a will, or probate records for Isaac Webb who died sometime before the 1850 census. The census lists his wife Sarah as a widow--census was taken Nov 17 1850. Isaac Webb had a land patent in Camden which he got in 1844. The 1850 census lists widow Sarah and 7 Webb children living in Osage township. I hope someone out there can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Laura McCabe

Everyone for years talked about that my moms late aunt, leva hatfield conner was part indian. My mom claims she was so dark complected and her skin was wrinkled in the face. I have come to the conclusion that leva's mother martha Oneill hatfield, while she lived on this land with her brother james nate oneal and parents Issac Oneill and mary ann brown Oneill, I don't have any reason to believe that she was part indian and suggest direct family members to take a dna, which may prove or disprove that.

According to any and all info that can be gleaned from the internet, Jacob is buried on the Ross & Fay (Meads) Newton farm in section 23 of Russell township in Camden County. The farm was located just a little west and south of the town of Edith. Not sure who owned the farm prior to Ross and Fay as it appears that Jacob died before they were born.
Imagine it was in the Meads family. Jacobs wife Rosa and the Newtons are buried in the Pleasant Grove cemetery which is in that same area. The first burial in that cemetery was a former negro slave who worked for Thomas Meads-Thomas paid for his burial and donated the ground for the cemetery.

Vee Rudi, genealogy research volunteer
Camden County Historical Society & Museum

Thanks for answering Nita. Sorry to be so late answering, but I just now found your reply. This is wonderful--this is exciting! As I see it, your husband George and I are 3rd cousins once removed! Here is my family line:
Carl L. Glover (me)
Roy L. Glover (father)
Ira D. Glover (grandfather)
Francis C. Glover (great-grandfather)
William Glover (GG grandfather)
Ransom Glover (GGG grandfather)

Have any of the direct male descendants of George's line had their DNA tested? I would love to compare results.
I had mine tested at FamilyTreeDna. The results are on line along with 2 other lines descending from Ransom. I located but haven't communicated with Ed Cephus from the line of Ed H. I imagine you folks are familiar with him.
Would love to hear from you again. Here is my email address: carl.glover at yahoo.com
Thanks again,

Carl L. Glover

Hugh G. Swift (24 July 1910 - 17 March 1981) was the son of Hugh Sonoma Swift (6 April 1887 - 1 March 1972) and Fay Hopson Swift (1888 - 1969). The 1940 census shows Hugh G. with a wife (I can't make out her name) and child (Donald E. Swift) in Liberal, Seward, Kansas. I don't know what happened to them. His parents lived in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1940 and for the rest of their lives. Hugh S., Fay, and Hugh G. were together in Tulsa in the 1930 census and in Quay County, New Mexico in 1920. Hugh, Fay, and "No Name" Swift were in Choctaw, Oklahoma in 1910.

Hugh S.'s father was William Baker Swift, born in 1861. His family is in Nocona city, Montague, Texas in the 1900 census. W B Swift married E L Richmond in Jackson, Tennessee on 6 July 1884. That's as far back as I know this branch of the Swifts.

Fay Hopson was my maternal grandmother's sister.

I'm going to be visiting Camden County in a couple of weeks and need directions to the New Freedom Cemetery. Looking for it online has me confused...is it on Hwy A? Will I be able to see the cemetery from the road?

I'm also looking for directions to the Old Linn Creek Cemetery. I'm thinking it's the Memorial Cemetery on Fontana Lane which I believe is off of Hwy Y (about 1 & 1/4 miles from Hwy 54). Can anyone confirm this?

I'll be coming up from I-44 (from St. Louis) and we will be spending a couple of days in the area.
I see these posts are several years old but to add info that I have: George Vernon Appleton, son of Daniel Hybert Appleton and Jennie Jemimah Woolrey was born in Missouri 12-9-1868, married Armenta Lea Cable on 6-27-1930 in Oklahoma. He died 4-30-1961 and she died 01-05-1955. Both are buried near Dale, Texas in Caldwell county at the Bunton Cemetary. They are my grandparents. He was called Vernie by family and Blackie by people in the community. He called my grandmother Alice or Lea, as he did not like the name Armenta. Their youngest daughter was named Alice Lea. Their oldest, Virginia June, is my mother

Hello, I am wondering if you can help me. I am researching our Sullivan family Line. They lived in the Missouri area from the 1850s through the turn of the century. We are not sure of the eldest parents names but understand that they passed away sometime during the Civil War in the Pest House near Ironton, Missouri. We were also told that this "Pest House" was later referred to as the "Poor Farm". They had several children that were taken in by various family and area people following their parent's death from the Small Pox. Two of the children were William Victor Sullivan (born in Dec 1859) and his brother, John L. Sullivan (born in August 1856). We believe there were two sisters, N.Nancy and Elizabeth (Lizzie). We believe there may have been others but can't be sure. William was reportedly born in Liberty, Iron County, Missouri and in all likliness, so were his siblings. We would love to know more about the family should anyone know. William Victor Sullivan married Etta Caroline Braswell, Lizzie married Nathan Oneal. A small note that a cousin has shared has some information written on it that, "the Sullivans were buried near the "Ivester Farm". We are not sure if there may be a cemetery there somewhere or that they were buried on what is now "private property". We would love to discover the whereabouts of their final resting place. Other families associated are the "Carnahans" Stevenson or Stepherson" "Hubble" "Oneal" and "MCfadden" Should you have any information, please email me at glendalecrazy@aol.com or give me a call at 406-465-5667. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and thank you for the response!
I have a suspision that the James Thomas Long you listed below, who married a "Settie" or similar name is my great grandfather.
The 1900 Indian Territory Census lists my James as born Dec 1852 in Missouri and married to "E.R." born April 1862 in Arkansas. The birth year conflits with a family Bible record and other information that says he was born in 1856.
That census list seven sons and one daughter.
Names were (in order) James Auther, Richard Burnie, William Ernie,Thomas C.,Ester Burnettie, John Elet, Roy Sidney (my grandfather), Ira Gunter as a new born.
After that census, they had two other children, Tressie born 1901 and married a Gardenhire, and Jack Marrow born 1903.
James' wife listed as "E.B." was Elsettie Rebeca Burnettie Trantham. She went by "Zettie"
The parents of James Thomas Long have been a mystery to our family and remains so. Just maybe we can tie him in with the family you listed.
You mentioned that you cannot "confirm or find additional info" on three males with one being James Thomas. Can you confirm they were Children of James Richard - son of William and Minerva??
I, Jim Long, am 63 and my father is still alive at 88.
My email is burnt_ridge@tds.net please contact me there as I am not great with the genealogy lists.

I am still active and researching. Just not getting far fast. Have not been able to get beyond Thomas D Long and his wife Mary Bond.
Know that Mary Bond was the daughter of Wright Bond and Frances Grady of Louisa Co, VA.
Have no further info about Thomas D Long - other than he was born in VA in 1803. One family member said he was from Bedford, VA, but, I have been able to locate no info on this.
+++++++
Military records for Richard H Long (son of Thomas and Mary ) were gotten from the National Archives. It confirmed names on his children and led us to find additional descendants.
William Long b abt 1852 married Minerva Jeffries, and had one son James Richard Long b 1890. James had 11 children, tracing them has added quite a few branches, most of them in the Lee's Summit area, Jackson Co, MO area.
There are 3 names that we cannot confirm or find additional info about.
Charles Long b abt 1856.
Jack or N J Long - who supposedly md a woman from ARK.
James Thomas Long - b abt 1862 - who supposedly married someone by the name of Settie or something similar.
These are children of Richard Long b 1825.
++++++++++
With regards to the siblings of Richard Long
most of those lines have been found except for confirmation on one John Thomas Long b 1831, VA.
We believe that he married Mary Ann Bowling and had one daughter, Nancy Jane b 1863. And a son named John Bowling Long b 1873. Mary Ann Bowling Long remarried John/Jack Matthias in 1876 and John Bowling Long was adopted and took the name of Matthias.
Cannot find a death date or burial location for John Thomas Long.
=====

Hi. Hope you are still checking your query. My grandfather was John Elmer Shumate, brother of Mamie. He went to normal school in Missouri, married my grandmother, Pearl Ruth Warmholz, and together they moved to Oregon where he taught school for a while in La Grande and later owned a Buick dealership. His children were Wilmer, born about 1911 in Mo., Mildred Ruth, my mother born in 1914in La Grande, Or. , and Victor, born about 1916. He died about 1960 in Sweet Home Oregon.
Johnsons

According to the Certificate of Death of Arch W. Johnson, Wm. Johnson was his father and his mother's maiden name was Evans. Arch was born in Alabama on February 28, 1851.

The 1880 U.S. Census for Kelly Township, Ripley County, Missouri lists W.O. Johnson as the father of A. Johnson. A. Johnson was 29 years old in June 1880 and was born in Alabama. His father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Alabama. W.O. Johnson was 57 years old and was born in Tennessee.

W.O. Johnson's children were: A. Johnson (29 years old and born in Alabama); W.O. Jr. (20 years old and born in Texas); B.A. Johnson (17 years old and born in Missouri); and E.J. Johnson (15 years old and born in Missouri).

The 1870 U.S. Census for Jasper Township, Camden County, Missouri lists Wm. Johnston as the father of Archibald (19 years old and born in Alabama), Fredric (12 years old and born in Texas), William C. (10 years old and born in Texas), Rebeca A. (8 years old and born in Missouri), and Evia J. (5 years old and born in Missouri). Three houses away is Isaac Johnston, 24 years old, born in Alabama

The 1860 U.S. Census for District #1, Hopkins County, Texas, lists Archibald Johnson as 9 years old and born in Alabama. His father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Alabama. William Johnson was 35 years old (born in 1825) and was born in Tennessee. His wife, Jane Johnson was 33 and was born in Alabama. Their children were Isaac Johnson (13 years old and born in Alabama), Reubin Johnson (11 years old and born in Alabama), Archibald Johnson (9 years old and born in Alabama), Frederic Johnson (3 years old and born in Texas), and William Johnson (7/12 years old and born in Texas).

The 1850 U.S. Census for Jackson County, Alabama, Township 5, Range 5, Enumeration District 20, has William Johnson as 28 years old and born in Tennessee. His wife, Giney, was 20 years old and born in Alabama. Their children were: Isaac (3 years old and born in Alabama) and Rubin (1 year old and born in Alabama). They lived two dwellings away from Archibal and Rachel Evins. Archibal was 25 years old and was born in Alabama.

The Bureau of Land Management Accession/Serial # AL3670_.269, Document No. 14912, lists William Owen Johnson in Aliquot Parts NWNE, Section/Block 28/ , Township 5-S, Range 5-E, Meridian Huntsville, State AL, Counties, Jackson. This land grant was purchased on March 10th, 1852. This agrees with the federal census of 1850 as described above for T5R5. The copy of the land grant describes the area of land as 40.13 acres. The Agricultural Census of 1850 lists William Johnson at the same location as having 40 acres of undeveloped land.

From an Email 13 Aug 2008: The original plat book does not contain personal information about individuals. However, years ago I corresponded with a descendant of William Owen Johnson and made a note by his name in my 1850 hard copy of the Jackson County census to the effect that William Johnson married Jane (Gincy) Evans and they moved to Hopkins Co, TX by 1860. The Medlin Dunham who lived next door to William Johnson in 1850 had married Sarah Johnson, and the Medlens moved to Phillips Co, MO, circa 1855-1857. The Archibald Evans who lived next door to the Medlens had married Rachel Benson.

This is all the personal info I have on William Owen Johnson. William Johnson's land was located southeast of Alabama Highway 79 and was sitiuated between Mink Creek and Sauty Creek. Both these creeks empty into the Guntersville Reservoir of the Tennessee River.

If any one could help add additional info, I would greatly appreciate it!

Jim Johnson

Regarding the Moulders of Linn Creek...

My Great Grandfather was Doc Moulder of Old Linn Creek. His daughter Emma married William Winfrey, they were my grandmother and grandfather. Will had two sons, John David Winfrey, my father and Jack, my uncle. Jack had 1 daughter and John had 7 sons and 1 daughter. I also have probably the only surviving complete copy of the History of Missouri, Camden, LaClede, Miller...counties.
