James] Lane's forces drove off a small Southern force and then looted and burned the town [lynching nine locals in the process]. --- Lane's raid stirred hatred that would contribute to Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas, leading in turn to the depopulation of four counties of western Missouri under [Union] Army General Order No. 11." (see: ) --- The Osceola raid had so enraged Quantrill that he grabbed the chance to do away with Capt. Smith and his mistreatment of Southern sympathizers in southwestern Missouri, convinced also that wealthy landowner Obed had guided Lane to Osceola.
