Was there a Catholic church in Jefferson City in 1846?

I am looking for baptism records for an ancestor born in Moniteau CO, MO in 1846. Per the Moniteau CO MO Genweb site, Catholic baptisms in Moniteau CO were performed by a traveling priest from Jefferson City. I know of a St. Peter Catholic church and parish in Jefferson City but do not know when the parish was formed.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
