Texas was then and is now a dual registration state which means the local registrars retain a copy of all birth and death records for the events that take place within their jurisdiction and the state retains the original of all birth and death records for the entire State of Texas. However, the statutes for registering these events were not made mandatory until 1926. However, many local registrars did not adhere to the statutes until the late 1930’s or early 1940’s. This means some records reside only in the local registrars’ files and not with the State.

statement source -
Sherry Crawford
Group Manager
Request Processing
Vital Statistics Unit
(888) 963-7111, ext 6195

MO death record - this would be the father -
Newton Turley
Birth: Jan. 31, 1848
Death: Jun. 17, 1902

Inscription:
Co H 46 Reg Mo Inf

Burial:
Shiloh Cemetery
Douglas County
Missouri

Earl H.

Anyone out there have info on Earl H Turley? He was born 1874 and died in 1941. Lived in Houston Texas, was said to be born near Ava, MO and had some family in Ft. Scott, Kansas. I'm having great difficulty finding anything on his death or location at time of death. His mother died a few years before him and said he lived in Houston, Texas in her obituary.

Peggy -- any idea which of Aaron and Allabeth's children she descends from? There is a lot of information, and hundreds plus descendants. If you give a little more information, I might be able to help.

Hello Fellow Researchers!
My simplified pedigree chart is:
Steven Douglas Fairweather, ME,
Margie Lucille Hood, Mom,
Delphia Mae McDaniel, Grandmother,
Sarah Frances Freeman, Great-grandmother,
William Riley S. Freeman, 2G-grandfather,
Daniel Riley Freeman, 3G-grandfather,
Alabeth Ball, 4G-grandmother,
Silas Ball & Tendergrass/Pendlegraf, 5G-grandparents...

My mother gave me a hand-written family tree that she and Sarah (Great-grandmother) sat down and wrote at the kitchen table in about 1955. Like everybody else, I am looking for verifiable documentation to confirm the lineage above...all I have is my Great-grandmother's recollection.
Does anybody have any "new" information? Please email direct at sdfairweather@yahoo.com
Thanks, Steven

I've discovered a Mary Jane Packard buried in New Hope Cemetery, in Douglas County, MO, Champion Township. This is the only Mary Packard I have been able to find. This is very closed to the Yates Cemetery where the Hicks Family and some Packards are buried. Amanda Packard married Warren Hicks and their son was Luther Dixon Hicks after Amanda's father.

Carl James here. I don't know about your family but one of my relatives, Jessee Ballard James was supposed to have a mill at Topaz and was hung there during the Civil War accused by the Confederates of supplying grain to the Union Army. This is a historically documented event but I know nothing about his mill. I assume it was an earlier one.Check my site for relatives. I have several thousand people on it.

I had a very, very serious computer meltdown and lost a whole lot of information, including email addresses from way back. Thank goodness!
Please contact me privately.
I have found other details about gg gf Johnson. America Elizabeth Alexander married into a strange group of Johnson/Castline/Casterline/Phillips, remembering that these folks had connections with VanMeter, Watson, McEndree from Iowa,KS, KY and MO.
Cheers, everyone!

Ivan Park and Nora Brentlinger were both living in Douglas County in 1920. Ivan was living with his sister, Minnie E. {Park} Letsinger. Nora was living with her parents Albert M. and Flora A. Brentlinger. By 1930 Ivan and Nora were married and living in Bulter Co. KS as well as the Brentlinger family. The 1930 Butler Co. census said Nora was age 19 when she married. She was born abt. 1902. Marriage date should have abt. 1920 or 1921. The marriage location should have been in Douglas Co. Missouri.
Any help with this marriage record will be greatly appreciared. Mellonpark

JO, dear lady! I am so glad that you posted more than once!
I did not get the notification from 2007, about your message/response---so I was totally un-informed about anyone posting information. Thank goodness for current technology and all of the improved response systems.

Yes, I do research some of your lines! Your Phoebe Freeman was sister to my (what would he be? ggg gf, William Freeman that married Rebecca James) Anyway, I am connected, let me check my notes at home.

I do recall that I talked via phone with Hobart Dobbs in Il, I do believe that may have been late 1970s/early 1980s (before my grandmother died)If I am remembering this correctly, he talked at length about his Pheobe Freeman Dobbs and he did remember some about the Alexander family in Douglas Co., MO (from which my group descends) and he was so precious because he remembered so many little memories that he had until then, forgotten. He was so genuine and so helpful and promised if he remembered more he would contact me. I believe that I received one letter after that.
I will check on this but I do remember the lengthy telephone conversation and I had such regreted not making sure that my grandmother was available and located with me when I had phoned (because when I had tried the number again later when grandmother was there----unfortunately, he was not available! I know that they would have talked forever, but it would have been worthwhile if I could have connected them that day, but it wasn't to be!) Although just the possibilities of talking to cousins brought on a new quest for memories in my grandmother and it motivated such wonderful excursions into her memories that I was able to capture much more information from her because of the potentiality of speaking with Hobart Dobbs in IL.

Obviously, Jame and Phoebe Freeman Dobbs were very respected with our Alexander family and my grandmother Johnson whose mother was the eldest of the Alexander children had been privy to all the stories about the Freeman and James families there in Douglas Co., MO.

I only wish they had written some of the information down so that we wouldn't have lost it. Still searching!
Will get back here when I find my notes on DOBBS!
So very glad to have found a connection!( I know that there have been a number of entries for connections of the Freeman family on the MO-Dougla mailing list) I have connected with a few of the relatives who are interested in genealogical research and documentation. Wish there were more, interested descendants of all our Freeman families!!!

Thanks so very much for posting twice (5 years apart) as I did not know about the 1st post!!!
Thanks,
Beth

Hi, I’ve been monitoring the MODOUGLA part of Rootsweb for information on the Ava area. My great granddad Harrison Downing (b. 1846) and great grandmother Martha S Downing (2nd wife b. 1845) lived in the Ava area probably in the early 1880s. I find no trace of them in MO censuses until 1900 when they are shown in Montgomery County, MO. I know Grandpa Downing had property in Ava at one time. He was known to be a mail carrier with a lame leg so delivered mail by buggy. Family stories tell of how he and first wife (name unknown, pregnant and with 1 child) were caught in a twister. She and child were coming down an outdoor stairway to better shelter when the twister tore them and the house apart. Grandpa D hurried to get them out of harms way, saw the whole tragedy, but never got to them in time to save them. Don’t know what year this happened, maybe it was even in a different location, but wondered if you have any information on this possible event in Ava, or this family name. Thanks in advance for any help.
bancroftk@michigan.gov
Issac and Manuel were twins as well as Myrtle and Ethel Cole. Twin brothers married twin sisters! Myrtle and Ethel were full blood Cherokee Indians. I would love to know about issac's second family because he and myrtle did devorice. I would also like to know about Ethel and Manuel's family.
Hi, I think I am related to you this line of Humbyrd's. My great great grandfather? was the one who was killed by the grubbing hoe. I am trying to do some research on the family name. It seems somewhere one of the Humbyrds came out west to Washington state and changed the spelling of the name to "I" instead of "y". My grandfather's name was William Raymond Humbird nicknamed "Smokey". He was born in Washington in 1920. I know the family came from Missouri and I believe before that, Tennessee. There were also Evan's and Duckworths in this family line, but i'm not sure how it all fits together. I have not been able to find a great deal of information on the web and would appreciate any info about the family name. Thanks Eddie Humbird
