William Nolen Smyth of Sullivan, passed away Monday,March 29, 1999, at the age of 81 years.
Mr Smyth was born January 5, 1918, in Cardwell, MO, tot he late William t and Icey Louise (Eudaly) Smyth. His early years were spent in Cardwell until, as an adolescent, he moved to Flint, Michigan.
In 1943, he was inducted into the US Army at Camp Robinson, AR. He served as a surgical technician in the Eastern Mandated, the Western Pacific, and in an air offensive in Japan. He was honorably discharged on Dec 6, 1945, having received the following decorations and citations: American defense Service Ribbon, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, one Service Stripe, a Good conduct Medal,and a District Unit Badge.
He, then returned to Michigan, and worked in the sheet metal Industry for several years. following his retirement in Michigan, he married Arzetta Kendrick on July 28, 1989, in El Paso, TX. Together, they lived for short periods of time in both Ft Meyers, FL and Youngstown, AZ. In 1995, Mr Smyth moved to the Sullivan area, where he lived until his death.
He is survived by his wife Arzetta, of Sullivan; two stepsons, David Severson and Bruce Severson, both of Sullivan; one step-daughter, Linda Carlson of Hannibal, MO; one sister, Violet Thomas of Youngstown, AZ; one half-sister, Esther Gates of Youngstown, AZ; two brothers-in-law, Walter Kendrick and Robert Kendrick both of Sullivan; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted 1:00 pm March 31, 1999, from the Chapel of Hassebroek-Felton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Ted Hurley officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Cemetery in Sullivan.
