Rita Ellen Barns, nee Rogers, 83, St. Clair, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, in Sullivan.
Rita, daughter of the late Elver Dennis Rogers and wife Mildred Lucille, nee Venute, was born July 4, 1930, in Chicago, Ill. She was united in marriage to Donald Lee Barns March 23, 1952, and four children came to bless this union.
Rita was a Christian and member of the First Baptist Church, Villa Ridge. She also was a member of the St. Clair Senior Citizens Center. She was an active person, working outside the home at various jobs. For several years, she and her husband owned and operated a gas station in St. Clair, and later she was employed at Meramec Caverns. She was a very giving, civic-minded person and enjoyed volunteering at the St. Louis Arch as a storyteller for the children. Doing ceramics was her passion and many of her hand-painted items will be treasured by her family forever. Playing cards and board games with her family and grandchildren was another of her hobbies, as was listening to Elvis Presley music. The love shared with all of her family and the many wonderful memories will be cherished by all of them.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lee Barns Sr.; parents, Elver Dennis and Mildred Lucille Rogers; one grandchild, Robbie Barns; and one brother, Owen Rogers.
She is survived by two sons, Donald Lee Barns Jr., known to most as "Donnie," and wife Kaye, Loose Creek, and Richard Barns, Jefferson City; two daughters, Susan Reed and husband Jim, Owensville, and Cindy LoCricchio and husband Ed, Bow Mar, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Daniel Reed, Connie Koepke and husband Jeff, Mike Reed and wife Heather, Christina Barns and fiance Jake, Elizabeth Barns, Jianna Capri LoCricchio, Paige Barns and Eric Barns; two brothers, Dennis Rogers, St. Clair, and Richard Rogers and wife Betty, San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Nancy King and husband Rex, Springfield, and Millie Kattawar and husband Jerry, Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Donna Rogers, St. Charles, and Annie Barns Woodruff, St. Clair; six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 21, at First Baptist Church, Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Roger Johnson officiating.
A private committal will take place at a later date at Anaconda Cemetery, St. Clair.
Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, Villa Ridge.
The family entrusted the services of their loved one to Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair.
