Luther Parker b. 7/27/1872 Missouri

I am researching my GGGrandfather- Luther Parker born 7/27/1872 born in Missouri; parents are James and Mary Parker. As a young boy Luther moved to California with his parents where he was Schooled as a Teacher, He was a teacher for the Bureau of Education, in 1900 he was at an Indian School in Oregon,(where he met my GGGrandmother Josephine LaBonte) he then went to the Philippines 1901 as a teacher (Thomasite) then became a Superintendent, in the late 1910's to the 1920's I believe he married a Maud Neal and then moved back to California in the Santa Cruz area where he lived out his retirement. While in the Philippines Luther Parker was an amateur Archaeologist and Poet. I have hit a snag, while most research says his mother in Mary Ellen Reese; his death certificate says her maiden name is Wilson. Can anyone help??

Civil War Soldier who died in Iron County, Can you help

Wesley Alexander Middleton died in or near Annapolis, Iron County, Missouri. This soldier was shot during a battle at Chickasaw Mountain. I would very much like to find his grave so he can be remembered. I also do not see him listed in any of the nearby counties as having served from a particular county, yet we do have his pension papers. The pension papers give two death dates, on is May 18, 1900 and the other is May 18, 1901. If anyone can help do a bit of searching in the Iron County area on this man his family would appreciate it so much.

Lydia/Liddie Loness and Thomas A. Buxton m. abt 1881

I hope someone working on this family or the Lonas/Loness/Lomas line can help me. I cannot find Elvira/Elvary/Vira in the census prior to her 1877 marriage to Albert, who is actually George Albert Buxton. I have tried every spelling I can come up with and still strike out.

Does anyone have Elvira in the 1870 census? If so, could you tell me where, how, spelling, county, or some way to find it for myself? I am very interested in knowing her parents and siblings.

In Elvary Buxton's obit, a sister, Mrs. Tom Buxton is listed as a survivor. This would mean George Albert Buxton and Thomas Buxton (brothers) married Loness/Lonas/Lomas sisters, Elvira and Lydia. I have not found the marriage record for Thomas Buxton and Lydia Loness. The only way I know Lydia's maiden name is through obits. Elvary Buxton's obit entry, as well as Lydia and Thomas's son Toney's obit, which lists his mother as Lydia Loness.

Thomas and Lydia Buxton lived in Iron County. George and Elvira lived in Iron County, then moved to Washington County after 1910. Thomas and George's father is a son of my gr gr gr grandfather and I am filling in census data on the Buxton family in my database. Any help would be appreciated.

Linda Gregory

I would like to know if there are any other cemeteries in the Brunot area other than the Brewington Cemetery? I am researching my Thompson family. I'm looking for the burial site of William Gideon and Lavina (Broadway) Thompson. I know that their daughter Mary was married to Benjamen F. Russell and that Mary and Ben are buried at the Brewington Cemetery.

Martha ORR, died June 15, 1892

Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, June 23, 1892, Page 5

Died, at the residence of her father on Crane Pond, June 15th, 1892, Mrs. MARTHA ORR, aged 31 years, 3 months, and 10 days.

The subject of this memorial was the daughter of Rev. Robert Seal and wife; Was born March 5th, 1861, being reared in Iron county, the county of her residence up to the time of her decease. At a very early age, she professed faith in Christ as her Savior, became identified with the Baptist church and was one of the most brilliant lights and devoted workers in her Master's work during the remainder of her natural life. She was united in marriage to Mr. B. F. Orr while quite young and from this union, they were blessed with three children, two of whom are living, one having passed to the mansions beyond. Her husband has been dead more than five years and during her widowhood she as made her home with her parents. Sister Orr had been a sufferer for several years from some chronic kidney trouble, but was able to be around till the last four or five months of her life, when she became so weak and feeble she had to keep her bed. During all her sickness she was nursed and cared for by her parents, brothers and sisters and everything done to alleviate pain and add to her comfort, in addition to medical aid, hoping that health might be again restored, but man's will is not God's and the loving Creator has seen fit to call a jewel home.
I am looking for a cemetery in Iron County, probably in or around Pilot Knob. My grandmother said she went with her grandfather Robert Probst to it when she was a little girl. It is a cemetery on a hill and there is a cave near it. I don't know who is buried there, I assume it is an ancestor and may be a Probst, Voges, or Vasterling. Any information would be grately appreciated. You can contact me at drewblattner@yahoo.com

Thank you

I would like to correspond with researchers of this family; particulaly Columbus Richardson and his wife Mary. Mary was married first to Sweeney.

I think there's a strong possibility that she is not the daughter of a Thompson and is a member of my Stevens family. I would like to explore this with someone who is familiar with the family line.
Jack Armstrong Obit, died 26 Jul 1895

Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, Thursday, August 1, 1895, Page 4.
Obituary
Ironton, Mo. July 29, 1892 [I think they meant 1895]
Mr. Jack Armstrong, an old citizen of Ironton, died at his home on Shepherd St. July 26th, at about 6 o’clock a.m., at the advanced age of 85. Mr. Armstrong came to this state from Tennessee, having been brought here a slave by Mr. Dickens.

He was a member of the United Baptist Church. For eight years the hand of affliction rested upon. The funeral service took place at Zion Chapel, M.E. Church, at 2 p.m., July 28, 1895, Rev. H. A. Henley, the pastor, and others taking part.
-----------------------------------------------
Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, Thursday, August 1, 1895, Page 5.

“Uncle Jack” Armstrong, one of the colored survivors of slavery times, died at his home last Saturday, after eight years of suffering from rheumatism, a great portion of which time he was helpless as a child. When in health he was industrious and careful as to the expenditure of money. He never took a holiday, and the circus had no charms for him. He was an old-time darkey, and his death removes yet another land mark from the boundary which divides the present from the time “before the war.” He was about 85 years old.
Looking for a match for my Buckner line need to find John E. Buckners parents can anyone help?
John Buckner according to his daughter Ida was born in the Iron County Missouri area about 1851 and according to records John's parents were born in Tennessee .In 1879 Iron County Missouri, John married Phoebe Lewis who was born in Sabula, Iron County, Missouri. Robert and Mary Griffith who were the parents of Pheobe were from Tennessee.
John and Phoebe Lewis Buckner had 7 children together all girls namely; Ida Bell Buckner Clopp, Maude or Mody Buckner Gunnett, Leatha Pearl Buckner Gunnett- Plummer, Lula Buckner Boese , Minnie D. Buckner Carleton - Rapp, Zora A. Buckner Vanderwerff and Ila Buckner.
Phoebe died during childbirth August 16 1899 in Iron County Missouri from census records on John it seems he never re-married but raised the girls on his own .Of course marriages could have occured between census years however nothing has surfaced to show that happened.
John was a farmer through out his life and did well it seems for he had patent to land in the Iron County area and on the 1900 census it shows that his home was a farm it was owned and not mortgaged. His land transfer papers for 1902 and 1904 could be for this farm he already owned or another in addition to what he owned in 1900.He was all ready well established by 1900 therefore he had lived in the area for some time at this point.
John lived in the Iron County area up until the years between 1910 and 1920 , he was living with his daughter Zora and her husband Richard Vanderwerff Jan of 1920 on Warren street in the North St. Louis area.
John's date of birth varies from census to census , he has a different age on all which places him being born from 1850 to 1856 and if the death notice is correct his birth would be 1852 /53.
Death certificate found for John Buckner St Louis Missouri and death notice gives his death as Dec 1920 in St. Louis Missouri, the death certificate gives his fater as John Buckner mother not given.

Piece of the puzzle

I have been stumped. I am looking for Marion Henson, born December 1884 in Iron County. I have looked on the Missouri state website pre-1910 birth records and found references to some of his cousins born around the same time 1883-1885.

I am trying to determine sho his parents were. I know his fathers name was Francis Marion Henson, b. 1849, but there is some confusion on his mother. Some believe her name was Margaret (Maggie) Napp, b. 1861, but I have records to indicate her name was Margaret (Maggie) Mayberry.

Can anyone help me with this dilemma? It would be greatly apprecieated.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

I am looking for information on Marie Chumbley Rogers, the daughter of Ona Beasley and her first husband Ernest Chumbley. Marie was probably born in Barry County, Missouri, and she married Charles Rogers, but I don't know where.

The Social Security death index says that a Marie Rogers
died Jan 1983, with last residence 63650 (Ironton, Iron, MO)

My cousin says that Marie and Charles had at least one child, Charles Edward Rogers, but I don't know anything about him.

If any of this family sounds familiar, let me know.

Thanks!

- Heather

I am looking for the grave site of Jacob STEWART. He passed away on August 27, 1946 in St. Louis, and his death certificate states that he was buried in Ironton. His wife, Mary Ann (BRAWLEY) STEWART passed away in about 1926. I have been unable to locate her death certificate or grave site. They lived in Reynolds County and Iron County, so I believe that she must have been buried in one or the other of those two Counties.

List of Iron County Surnames - Grand Army of the Republic 1882-1940

The Grand Army of the Republic was a patriotic organization open to Union veterans of the Civil War who served in the U. S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps or in state regiments in active service.

This is an index to the death rolls which were printed in the Proceedings of the [lst-59th] Annual Encampment[s] of the Department of Missouri, Grand Army of the Republic dated 1882-1940. Though all posts each year were to have submitted names of members who died during the previous year, not all complied, and of those that did, not all were consistent in supplying names of deceased members every year. The user of this index should also note that the 1884 and 1903 Proceedings did not list death rolls, so deaths for the years 1883 and 1902 are not fully represented. This index is not intended to be a list of all G. A. R. members.

The death rolls in the Proceedings of the Annual Encampments will in most cases give additional information, such as cause of death, regiment, company, and rank.
This book is not limited to men who fought in Missouri units. It can include any Union veteran who belonged to a G. A. R. post in Missouri after the Civil War.

If you find a name in this index which interests you and you would like a xerox copy of the original death roll which shows the name, please send your request and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI
REFERENCE LIBRARY
1020 LOWRY
COLUMBIA, MISSOURI 65201-7298

These records extracted and formatted for use on this site by Kay Clerc-Fakhar

------------------IRON COUNTY-------------------

Bringham, Levi / Post #579 in Pilot Knob, Iron Co. Everything I have been able to identify online is for later periods. Specifically I am trying to locate death information for Mary Elizabeth (possibly Bridget) (Needham) BRADY and marriage information for Henry Michael BRADY and Lavinia (? - possible surname SNYDER or GUFFEY). Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Maureen Brady

Andrew Jackson Sheahan (Obituary), Graniteville, Missouri

The following obituary is from "American Stone Trade," May, 1936, Vol. XXXVI, No. 9, pp. 13.

“Andrew Jackson Sheahan, 77, of Graniteville, Mo., passed away at his home in Graniteville, on February 20, 1936. He was the president of the A. J. Sheahan Granite Co., of that city who have quarried Missouri red granite for the trade for many years.

“Mr. Sheahan was born in Rockport, Mass., on January 1, 1859, and came west to Missouri with his twin brother, when only nineteen years old. He found employment in Piedmont, St. Louis and Graniteville and eventually took over the further development of a valuable granite deposit and formed the company which bears his name. His wife, Emma Murphy, whom he married in 1882, died nearly twenty-seven years ago. They had four children, Andrew Timothy Sheahan, who died two years ago, Edward C. Sheahan, of Graniteville, Mrs. Ella Collins, of Arcadia and Mae Sheahan, of Graniteville. A man of deep faith and sterling worth, the business dealings of Mr. Sheahan were characterized by honesty, fair play and cooperation to all. The example of his fine character is a great heritage he has left to his children.”

Peggy B.
It's Civil War Re-Enactment weekend in Iron Co, MO - Sep-21-23

I just wanted to give a shout out to those located in Missouri that might want to attend the Civil War Re-enactment this weekend. It should be very good! There will be a dedication done by the Iron County Genealogical Society at 10:00 on Saturday, and plenty of re-enactors, and good food. Come by and enjoy Iron counties history first hand. The dedicated re-enactors have already started to arrive to set-up realistic Civil War encampments.

I will try to help and get this correct with the help of my Aunt Nina. Yes the stories about her being found on the boat is true as far as we know. My grandmother is Malinda Clinton and these stories were told by her. Granda Clinton was married twice. First to a Lee Williams and they had three children, Hansford, Fronia, and George who past away as an infant. Grandma Clinton then married Charles Ottman and the had five children. Goldie May {past away as a baby}, Goldman, Norman, Sylvia, and Nina. Even when Grandma Malinda was a young women you could see the indain in her past down from her mother Clar Dell. Clara Dell is buried on my family plot. We had the tombstones put up when my mother Sylvia died in 2001. My Aunt Nina and I go to the cemtary several times a year. If anyone wants to get ahold of us let me know. Thanks Donita

I have had quite a quandry for 3 or 4 years. Maybe one of you reading this can help me. My great grandfather (Ellis E.Dillon), was a collier (Coal Miner), and he just dissapears off the face of the earth about 1890. Does anyone know if there may have been a coal mining accident in Iron Co. around this time or perhaps a site that has coal minning dissasters in Missouri? I have researched everthing I know possible for 3yrs and am getting very frustrated. There are no death records or anything on this man that I can find. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
