Classification: Query
Surnames: Tate
Your great grandfather was William A. Tate instead of William M. which may be why you were having trouble finding him. He was the son of Major B. and Louisiana Missouri (?) Tate. Major was his first name and not a military title. Some family tombstones are:

Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 9, Pierce City and Western Pierce Township, Pierce City Cemetery, pp. 20, 30:
Block 8.
Tate, John W., Co. G., 15 Mo. Cav.
M. B., 11 Oct 1809 – 26 May 1883, Co. G, 15 Mo. Cav.
Louisiana M., 10 May 1822 – 18 Aug 1883, w/o M. B.
Block 15.
Tate, Nancy E., 1864-1952
William A., 1861-1923
Fred G., 1886-1958
[also Kuklenski, and Majors in same block and Block 16]

I will send more later.
