Looking for Obit. on a LeRoy P. Matkin, b. about 1851, Died about or after 1833 in Bevier, Missouri. Was married to a Margaget Josephine Johnson, died 18 Oct.1923. LeRoy was living in the 1930 census. He was buried in Bevier, or Keotie, just south of Bevier. Any help would help.

Hi, I am trying to find any grave locations for members of the family of George Henry O'Toole and his wife Clara (Wagener) O'Toole who lived in Macon, Macon County, Missouri.

George Henry O'Toole was born 21, February 1877 in Illinois
he died: 3, March 1958

Clara (Wagener) O'Toole was born in 1883 in Iowa

They had the following children:

Thanks for the reply, Malinda Atterbury 1858-1892 she married John W. Burnham in 1879 finda grave says she is buried in Bunce cemetery in Elmer Mo. I have been there John is buried there but not Malinda, no stone anyway. Emerald Atterbury 1827-1900 is Malinda's father. I would really like to find the burial location for these two ancesters.....Thanks

1940 is the last available census at this time.

You need to supply DOB's + birthplaces for ALL family members....

WHO is Malinda Atterbury Burnham?????

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

John Alexander Jones

I am trying to determine the veracity of family story. John Alexander Jones born 1857 in Ohio; married Margaret Celeste Oakley (born 1863 in New York)February 1880 in Bevier Missouri. They had three children Elon, Lucy and Frank. John Alexander died in 1896. It is said he was shot by a lover of Margaret.

Does anyone know of this story or how I might confirm if it is true or not?

Yes...most all of this is correct.
William and Margaret are my grandparents. Norman is my Dad.
My grandpa's brother was Alphonse, not Alfond.
Joseph A. Gix at the bottom was my Grandpa's brother.

Macon County Gipsons

Just a couple of notes on Robert L. Gipson/Gracie Smith descendants in my line that I usually see a lack of info on...
Robert's son Nathan Jay Gipson is usually listed as having died in 1860. Not only did Nathan live through that year, he was alive and well, living in St. Clair County, MO on the 1870 census, listed as N J Gipson. He died before 1880, I believe, as I can't find him on that census, and see no indication he moved out of state with any of his children.
Nathan's daughter, Polly Ann Gipson (b ca 1842) was actually named Mary Ann Gipson. She married Basil Howell Dishman in Macon County, MO in 1864, and gave birth to four children (the youngest in 1873 in St. Clair County, where her parents were) before becoming widowed ca 1868 in Ray County, MO. Mary Ann then married Thompson Burress in Carrollton, MO in 1879 and had two more children. Mary Ann died in 1931 and is buried near Hardin in Ray County.

My daughter is a descedant of Waddy Tate and Ruth/Rutha Miles. Rutha Miles was a daughter of Morris Miles. Waddy and Rutha were marrried in 1820 in KY and Morris Miles signed permission for his daughter Rutha to marry Waddy.

Hale, Hail, Haile

Looking for information on family of Stephen Hale Jr. who married Mary Polly Moody in Bedford VA, lived in Pulaski Co KY for a time and moved to MO with children. Stephen and Mary dies in Macon Co MO in 1848 and 1842. Brother Benjamin also may have come to MO. Benjamin's son Miles was in Andrew Co MO in 1850 Census.

I'm trying to discover parents of Cornelius Hail who was living with Miles (9 years his elder so not his father) in Andrew Co in 1850. We think Stephen Jr is his father but find no proof that either Stephen had a son Cornelius in 1823, or the name of Cornelius' father. Yet some family relationship seems apparent since Cornelius was living with Stephen's brother Benjamin's son Miles in 1850.

Can anyone help with the Hail (Hale) Family in Macon and Andrew Counties MO from 1830 to 1860? Thanks!

Two of my aunts by marriage (to two of my uncles who were blood related) were Lenora Kay Tuttle & Virginia Pearl Tuttle and were descendants of Nicholas Tuttle. He is buried in Antioch Cemetery southwest of Bevier near what was Keota, Macon County, Missouri.

William Franklin Craft of the Macon area was married to Dora Olive Jones. She died around 1891.

In 1894, he married Mattie. She was also a widow. Her maiden name was Wiggins, but her married name was either Clements or some variant of it. Her husband's name was Frank.

WF and Dora had three children: Nancy Elizabeth (Lizzie), James Albert (Boss), and Finis Emery.

Mattie and Frank had a son, Claude.

WF and Mattie had two more children: William David and Stella Marie.

I'm looking for *any* information on any of these people. Thank you.

I am looking for information regarding Napoleon Branum and Nancy Payne. They had a daughter Maggie Cullen according to the all information I have located on ancestry. Not sure why the last name changed, but she married Patrick Kelley in 1890, when she was approximately 11 years old (so glad we have new laws now) and he was 60 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note to history - it was John Oldham's father that got his son to turn himself in. The father witnessed the Battle at Kirksville (he lived there) and saw that the Rebel soldiers that surrendered were turned loose. Those that didn’t were sent to prison or executed. The father thought that if his son would go in voluntarily, the Union command would be lenient and allow the son to give an oath and bond and be let go. Never did the father imagine how wrong he would be.
