This isn't a thread about specific individuals in the census about the township itself. Looking at historical maps of the county from that era I do not see a township named Elk but I do see an Elk Mills. Researching the county's history in the late 1800s I understand there were also townships named Elk Fork as well as Elk River.
Does anyone know more about the township of Elk from the 1870 US Census? Specifically, was this the township of Elk Mills or a completely different portion of the county?
The 1870 US Census enumerates 191 dwellings associated with Elk Township if that helps at all. To me, that seems bigger than what I understand Elk Mills Township to have comprised during that time.
